I don't use 3 colors that much. Sometimes it's useful.
Also, I don't get all those complex programs either. What's so great? |

just like someone said earlier.... for pixel art deluxe paint is the shiz... seriously. i have heard about it for a long time, but thought it was only for amiga so i never tried to get it. not so. deluxe paint II was ported to dos, and deluxe paint animator was made for dos. these two should have all the tools you need, and then some. what makes them so cool is that they are built around the 256 collar pallete. it's not just the features that makes these programs cool, it's in the way that it does it. just try them out. the only drawback for me is that animator seems limited to 320x320, which is a bummer if you are doing gfx for the web, as ppl will be most likely looking at them at 1024x768, so you don't get a good "preview". but trust me, the advantages far outweigh the one con that i could find.
if you look around the web you can find them, it took me a faily deep search, but not as deep a search as it took to find 3d Studio r4, though. that took some work!!! if anyone is interested in these programs, and CAN'T FIND THEM ON THE WEB, (not being a snob, but if you want something you should work for it at least a little, they're not THAT hard to find)... then hit me up at theoreyes25@yahoo.com , i'll hook you up. PS: if anyone know how to get animator to work in 640xfoureighty, then please help a cracker out! Also all you DOSheads from back in the day, there is a reason for you to build a PC just to install dos: OZONE GUI Edited by theoreyes - 18 May 2007 at 12:32am |

On my Mac, I use the lovely freeware software "Pixel". It has all of the basic functions of PhotoShop such as layering, animation, etc, but is meant specifically for pixel art, and it's completely free.

I think you mean Pixen. Beware it crashes often and is a pain when you lose your work. Photoshop Elements (US$50) is a great cheap alternative for macs. It comes free often when you buy other stuff like the low end Wacom tablet (US$100) and you get a tablet, woot.

I just found out that Pixen was destroying my palletes the whole time I was using it. It always makes the colors lighter than I want them and changes the hues. Is there any other mac alternative that has a color table like pixen?

I want to be able to select a color and use it a split second later without having to validate, I really never use the eraser, rather I switch back and forth between the colors I'm working with. Anyone have any ideas? Doesn't happen with me in GIMP 2.4. In 2.4, you have the option 'Use info window' in the eyedropper tool options, so you can choose whether you want this behaviour (also, you should be aware even when you have enabled the info window, you shouldn't need to confirm -- ignoring it has no ill effect, and it disappears when you switch away from the eyedropper tool.) Anyway, I usually color-pick by ctrl+clicking with the paint tool (eg Pencil) I'm currently using, which IIRC never ever brought up an info window. In short -- upgrade to 2.4 and turn off 'use info window', or stay with your current version and Ctrl+Click with the paint tool to pick up colors. I recommend that you do both -- Ctrl+Clicking is so much faster and easier, and 2.4 is much better than what I expect you're currently using, 2.2. Check out, for instance, what happens when you press '9' or '0' -- moving through the current palette colors; the 'clipboard brush' (handy for pasting copies of an object) |

Ha.. I just got done with an animation in GraphicsGale... You can save it as a .gal (graphicsgale format) or a .avi which are both hard and/or impossible to upload to sites like pixeljoint or deviantart right? You can also save it as a jpeg, bitmap, or png, but it saves it as a static image instead of an animation....
![]() can anyone enlighten me? sorry, but i'm bit of a noob to this... ![]() |

The idea is to register it so you can save as gif.
If you are dirt poor and can't do that you can use File -> Export... to export frames in a sheet or seperate files and animate with an external gif animator. I'm sure there are also some avi to gif converters around, but I'm unsure what kind of quality they'd give you. It would be highly dependent on available codecs. |

You can convert avi to gif with Jasc Animation Shop. But if GraphicsGale also allows you to save every frame individually as static bitmap images, you should probably do that. BMP files are uncompressed so there's no loss in quality. Animation Shop can also string these together as an animation.

PNG is better, compression has very little to do with lossiness: PNG is lossless, BMP is lossless, JPEG is lossy. PNG is a reasonable size, BMP is the size of 14 elephants. 14 elephants are the last resort.

True, I should've mentioned PNG as well. Still, I don't think the filesize of BMP files matters much when animating, because the images would most likely be removed after they're imported and turned into a GIF animation.

Deluxe Paint II Enhanced V3.0 - Image Editor (PC/MS DOS) - 547KB
Deluxe Paint was THE pixel graphics tool on the AMIGA 500. The PC version came a bit later and development was not continued on the PC like on the Amiga, where DP made it to version 4 before it was stopped there as well. It was still ahead of its time when it came out. At that time was MS Paint for Windows 3.0 quite "hip" and "Autodesk Animator" (the maker of AutoCad) the McLaren F1 of PC pixel software. This version of Deluxe Paint is the "enhanced version" which supports "Super VGA" (256 colors BEYOND 320x200) to some degree (not really, but they made an effort). It should still run on most people's Windows XP PC. Edited by jalonso - 06 January 2008 at 6:22am |

I've been using it for a couple of days now and the only
downside I have found yet is that it has no color count
function. It does have support for layers and even opens
photoshop files. Have a look at:

I'm looking for a graphics editor that could do realtime tile preview.
So if I'm making a 32x32 tile it would show 9 of the same tile in a preview window so I can see how changing one pixel affects immediately. [x] this is the one I'm editing [x][x][x] [x][x][x] this is what I want a real-time preview to show [x][x][x] |

I use Personal Paint on the Amiga for all my pixel work, although if I want to switch to animating, I'll use Deluxe Paint.
That's Deluxe Paint V(5), which was the final version on the Amiga, which supported 24bit images, and had a whole bunch of extra cool features over Deluxe Paint IV. I can't recommend Personal Paint enough for pixel art though, and because it supports PNG, GIF, ILBM, BMP... you get the picture. It can load JPEGs, but doesn't save them, so retards won't accidently save their pixel art in a lossy format. |

So hey, I made my own GIF animator! I'd like to consider myself pretty much done with it, especially since there are so many others out there... But I'm proud of the work I did. The Accurate Preview is actually accurate as far as I know, you can align frames better using the Accurate Preview mode, and it's specifically designed for using and reusing with spritesheets. So hey...give it a shot if you've got the time! The link might not work, but you can copy and paste it to your address bar if that's the case. Geocities doesn't like off-site linking, after all. http://www.geocities.com/christiankinesis/incomp/KinAnim.zip
Note: Probably one of the worst issues with it is that global color tables don't really work. Also, it doesn't correctly save some larger animations. But you can safely extract the frames as separate BMP's (with the correct spacing and all) if nothing else works out for ya! Edited by DeProgrammer - 18 January 2008 at 5:46pm |

I use microsoft paint.
Why?
Because it's so simple. I have downloaded paint.net and absolutely HATE using it for pixel pieces of any kind. I use it for iconing and banners (as well as saving something as .png).
The things I hate most about MSPaint?
When you're drawing, and your mouse randomly scrolls for no reason at all!! ...and that line appears. >.< I hate that line.
*Thinks* Only being able to undo three times.
But, other than that, I really do love it.

I have a macbook pro with leopard, and though paintbrush works i guess... I really want to use pixen. Should I downgrade to tiger? does pixen work well on tiger? i'm willing to do so... since I can upgrade to leopard again whenever i need to. but I can't get any of these programs to work properly with Leopard... gimp, pixen, inkscape, etc.

Unfortunately Pixen has always been very buggy and unstable. I'm still running Tiger and I don't use it--though I'd prefer to--simply because I don't want to lose any more work due to frequent crashes. I wouldn't recommend downgrading just for Pixen.

Hi all (first post in this forum)
I've used artgem for a brief period. And found it very interesting. Right now I've trashed Windows completely and using Linux as my main OS. For this reason years ago I was looking for the old and beloved Deluxe Paint IIe I used on my Amiga. I found there was a linux conversion of dpaint IIe, called AOCP, but the code seems vanished in ye olde web :( Nowadays I'm using GIMP for all the graphics I do. |

I know how you make animations in GIMP, it's like this:
to make animation you make a new layer and there you paint the other one and so you go on, and finally you save it as .gif and then he asks you something and you say that you wan't to save it as an animation, and then you can chose the animation options. Hope you understood, I'm not that good with english... |

Amyk13: That's true. You might prefer to use GIMP-GAP, since it has much easier to use animation, including onionskinning, path movement, and other advanced features. IMO if you're doing an animation of any complexity, it is a better choice, rather than the built-in animation support. If you need to make a GIF animation, you just run 'video->frames to image' when you're satisfied, and then save the resulting image as GIF
(GIMP-GAP is available from www.gimp.org. you can see currently "GIMP Animation Package 2.4.0 Released 2008-01-30" at the bottom of the page,) |
