Here is what I've accomplished today.
![]() I decided to extend the skull pattern, because I feel it's more faithful to the ancient temple carvings that I've seen in museums and books. I probably won't be able to get more work done till Sunday evening due to work, but I'm really liking how it's coming along and can't wait to get it finished. The only thing I'm worried about is that I might be deviating stylistically from the rest of the project. |

It is very nice :D

Yes, I also worry about this, especially since there is not really a base set to which this matches... I'll do some proposals for that soon-ish, but others are welcome too! |

Harmonica, that looks great. I'm not sure its deviating at all, I'm sure it will all come together once there are more assets. As for a "base set", I think it will fit in fairly well with the temple assets currently being made, of which we haven't actually got a tileset. As for critique, I'd say put a bit more emphasis on the bevels, but yeah, looks great :)

@Harmonica - the line art is nice, but the shading deviates too much from the rest of the project imo.
I think we should make base tiles first and decorations/traps afterwards. There is no point in decorations if they don't fit the temple. And making temple fit the decorations is just wrong. |

![]() I tried to make a few tiles, not very happy with them though. The scale doesn't look quite right, and I couldn't make a wall that satisfied me. (hence why the left and right walls are different.) Nevertheless it was good practice and I got a good feel for platformer tiles. Will probably do more for this project |

Nice speedycube! It reminds me of the castle set.
Other design suggestions are still welcome :) Here is an attempt to put a3ums mockup into tiles... Does it work? ![]() Other suggestions, like the one from speedycube |

I think it's working. Perhaps the option should be given to set the blocks vertically and to extend them into basic columns?
After reading A3um's post I realized I was getting ahead of myself on the Skull totem, so I'll just set it on a back burner until some concrete blocks are set upon and then look at it again with fresh eyes. You do need the skeleton first to support the meat. I did address the concerns brought up by dawnbringer on the ribs. I hope they look better now. ![]() |

Here are Some ideas I've been thinking on. Basically Large step like blocks would serve as a base for smaller block clusters. Also I wish I had access to a reliable scanner.

I tried to make pillars. I disappointed myself. Can someone else have a go?
![]() Here is a completely different approach.. I like how it looks, but I feel that it is not very flexible: you can pretty much design only one temple with it.. :(. I'd love to design a whole temple level with the final set! But perhaps this can serve as the base to such a level anyway... Scale is probably off though, I should have used a reference character.. ![]() Edited by Hapiel - 27 May 2015 at 2:20pm |

It looks really really simple, could use some more details and alternate tiles. I might have a go at that and/or the pillar.

My thought is that you are a genius!
I like it a lot, it seems very flexible and fun to construct with! I wonder if we should be able to look at the blocks from the top a bit, like with the grass tiles.. ![]() I tried, but it removes the nice dark lines between the blocks... I am not sure if it is even needed, perhaps here the characters can just stand on top of the blocks? Or would that look inconsistent with the other tiles? ![]() |

I've been trying to figure out some textures for the blocks. For the big green ones I took a pattern from the jungle set. I'm not too satisfied with how it looks. It doesn't pop as much as I think it should, or perhaps the foreground blocks need to pop more? I think I just need to get more familiar with the palette.

Speedy: Yeah I think you should do a separate tread for an arctic/snowy area so it won't get crowded.I like the pattern you got going on the base of the snow, looks kind of snowflake-y :) It looks a bit flat though, see if you can incorporate the purple hue into the large gray area so it looks the same as the jungle set in the center, I think it'll give it a more unified look if every set has sort of the same "base".
Harmonica: I like the look of that temple, especially the outline the gray area creates (those rooftops). I think the problem with the texture is that it's too detailed, and I also think that maybe the building blocks that you're coloring in could be bigger. If used in a large area it'll become too noisy fast. I might try to do some iterations too |

Harmonica, I love the texture on the bottom one, I think it'd be better suited for a foreground tile though. Background tiles are better off with 2 or 3 colors so they don't become too noisy. Not a fan of the bricks, maybe it's the highlight?
Kazen, thanks! :) I'll get a thread started in the next day or so edit: Snowy or arctic set? Snowy is probably more realistic but arctic sounds better Edited by SpeedyCube - 29 May 2015 at 7:57am |

@speedy: I am looking forward to see your thread :)
--- As much as I like the double outline, to match the rest it will probably need to deal with a single outline (right side of mockup) Also I made the floor 1px wider... ![]() |

I tried a reiteration on SpeedyCube's tiles because I liked them very much, and seems to fit the OPP-style good too. I admit that I didn't spend too much time on this, but with some iterations I think it could look good.
![]() And a simple scene. Haven't added background walls but those could probably look something in the style of what a3um did with those darker shades. Noticed I left some red squares in the corner, sorry about that! :) ![]() |

Here's another iteration where there's walls involved. the "roofs" are inspired by harmonicas skyline-roofs. Also, I realized that the deep purple which is used on the grass was too much when looking at it.

So, what direction are we going to go? Any more people have opinions on what they like best?
I personally prefer Harmonica style at the moment, it seems more flexible to build amazing constructions. What do you guys think of this mixture of the two? ![]() |

I still think the second layer from the back, the dark-yellow one is too messy, too much going on, but I like the idea of having layers to make it have more depth.
a3um: Wow, really liking that tree down at the bottom! Also, I have to try and tile the temple-stuff and see what it looks like, because it liiks really nice. |

SpeedyCube: which tiles were you talking about?
Obviously these needs more work, many don't tile well with eachother (many uneven sizes) and I don't like the sides for the entrance (not that useful in their current form), but I like the general gist of it. I added Harmonicas background-tiles for more depth. ![]() and the set: ![]() |

Wow kazen, I love it! I hope you keep on working on it :D
I think Speedy meant the connection to the ground. But we'll figur that out, surely. I don't like the second layer blocks so much, so I made a quick edit, tiles in top left corner. Also, in the current state the third layer tiles have not much use, though I do believe a third layer would be cool.. I won't have much time soon to make a serious attempt at it :( Anyway, here is the edit ![]() |

Hehe, still not sure what you mean about connection to the ground :)
Yes, I don't like the second layer of tiles either, have to work on those, used yours in the new mockup. The third layer (you mean the dark purple right?) doesn't add that much no, except for depth, but it could look cool! As it is now, the second layer looks really out of place, but I wanted to show some progress. The front layer is more neatly aligned to get a better structure and some progress on the entrance (did something different from a3ums design though). Tileset: ![]() Mockup: ![]() |

Tried out a bit with the temple. It does need some more adusting to improve flexibility, especiall on the temple entrance which can now only be accessed if the stairs are underneath it AND there is a platform underneath the stairs.
Also, perhaps the blocks might need to be reorganized to be easier to understand in what order to place them, I was confused. ![]() Latest version of the tiles: ![]() |
