Hey guys!

Firstly, I'm new here to Pixel Joint.

I mainly work in 3D but I decided to make a Flash Platform Game earlier this year as a nice addition to my portfolio. Much of the core code is done and the level (just one so far) is coming along nicely.

I've decided that I want a photo realistic approach to the levels, however the objects and characters in the game I want to be cartoony.

After two attempts at making the player (30, 60 pixels) I decided to come here and read a few tutorials. I then made a third attempt (best attempt so far) and ended up with this little guy:

Its rubbish I know but the bad thing is I'm not sure what I should do to improve his look.

Just a quick description of the character, he is an 8 year old fast food addict named Marvin.

Any ideas guys?

Well, I can see from the start that you're using MSPaint (Not a bad thing :P) because of your colours- you're shading/ highlighting to the colours which are oversaturated. There's also nothing wrong with a black outline, on your character there is little definition, esp. on the face.
You are also using far more colours than you need to and are shading gradient style left -> right. What's that he's holding? It seems to cut off randomly when it reaches his pants.

Here's an edit to illustrate what I mean:
Mine is far more readable due to the CONTRAST between shades.

Keep it up, you can only improve :)

Whoa, that one you did is far better than mine! Nice work, it still looks as if it was drawn by hand which I like also.

You also added a bit of depth/detail to the shirt and shorts which I tried to add to the shorts in mine but didn't really do a good job of it. Not to mention that is much more visible than mine!

I'm actually using Photoshop but I'm using the pencil tool (brush tool in pencil mode) and the eraser all at 1px so its easy to understand why you thought I was using paint!

/me goes back to the drawing board
