I apologize if this is the wrong section for this question.  I think I'd like to try and make a game using Gamemaker in the style of Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania, or at least find out what it takes to try it.  What are the best resources to use to learn how to do this?  I think I'd prefer if there was a singular resource that I could use that by the end I would have knowledge of all the tools I'd need to accomplish this, rather than having to collect information from twenty different books/sites.  Hopefully something like this exists.

Gamemaker is filled to the brim with platformer tutorials, you shouldn't have much difficulty finding.

As for the visual side of things, just look at the intended games, and trying to learn said styles.

Hey JoshF.I am currently trying to make a platform game with Gamemaker. The best thing I've found is to search their resources (under the "make" tab) and download a platformer engine that someone has already programed. Then you can just apply your sprites to it.
I have yet to find an engine that is perfect so read up on the program and try some programming yourself. You can learn a lot by playing with other peoples code. It's sort of trial and error but is worth it to watch your character respond to a keystroke!
If you do find a master resource, please let me know!

Learn XNA. Its actually extremely simple, I have used it for a while and its pretty decent. Not difficult at all. Just google it, loads of stuff on it :)
