I'm remaking tiles for one of my favorite nostalgic games. It's called Factory and it was released for Mac OS 6 or 7 I believe. Here are some screenshots:
![]() ![]() As you can see, the graphics are very simple and amateurish, but not without their charm. Here's my take: ![]() The pipes have gone through several iterations. aha, lovely. great colors. what is the aim of the game exactly? is it like a create-a-pipeline-then-hit-go-and-watch type of games? sorry its late... the only comments i have is that the pipes could use some more contrast... like a teensy bit. try adding a highlight maybe? i mean i dunno whats your lightsource... like i mean the room? its indoors right? doesnt seem so well lit from the pipes. if thats the case then go right ahead, but IMO they still wouldnt really match the other sprites. basically (sorry i trail off) try adding a highlight to the pipes. contrast is goooood my friend... its ok haha.
also something about those arrows. they seem to look like calculator screens or the ones on the old game boy. if youre going for that then great job haha but im just sayin; they lack character. try thinking of something maybe a bit more original or something with more flair... i assume theyd be important aspects of the game, correct? you might want to consider thinking about if having them stand out a bit more by use of something like added flair or a different design would be important to the playing aspect, like the players point of view. maybe make it colorful! pardon this extremely disorganized post... it IS late and i tend to wander when i give critique... again sorry! |

The original appeals to me because of the high contrast and high saturated objects. No doubt what is what.
Yours however are sooo soft, why not spice them up? ![]() |

Thanks Lollige, that look great! I may overhaul the pipes at some point, but for now I'm just banging out tiles. I'll definitely tweak my colors. I've had a problem with contrast recently.
@fortunato: The idea of the game was that you had a month of work days, and on each day there was a different factory and a different product to make. You had to control the assembly line--make sure everything gets assembled in the right order, discard defective products, direct parts to the correct queues, and so on. The cool thing was, it had a level editor where you could make your own months. Even cooler, it had a rudimentary pixel editor for making your own products and components. Some of the first pixels I ever made were in Factory--a mayonnaise jar, a lid, and a label. The little test product I have floating among the pipes on the right is a tribute. And now you know a little about me. You can get it here. If you don't happen to have an old Mac lying around, it works on the BasiliskII emulator, although that requires a computer science degree to get set up and configured. The ones that are obviously not mine are, obviously, not mine. Oh, and to address pipe's earlier question: the light source is above/topleft, but I cheat it wherever I feel I need to. I noticed It was coming from the right on the arrow boxes, so I flipped them. EDIT: Lol, that sounds awesome. You know they've made a remake in 3D? Update! All of these are mine now:
I'm kinda unsure about the fire/water machines. I made one style where the images themselves indicated on/off, and another with a vertical buton/light on the left. Which is better? Edited by Hatch - 22 November 2009 at 9:00pm |

I think the fadey/unfadey style works better.

The ones with the white backgrounds are not mine. I deleted the alternate fire/water styles, thanks MrWeirdGuy. I'm having a hard time making tileable smoke :/ Anyhoo, I'm off to go stuff myself! |

Agree with Lucas.
Also, I don't see a color atmosphere yet, the palette looks random. It would probably help a lot to work on that. |

As said above, I plan to rework the pipes eventually.
Manu, I'm not sure what you mean. The colors are meant to be bright, vivid, and varied. A unified palette look is not what I'm going for. Do I misunderstand you? |

"bright, vivid, and varied" is ok with me as long as they work together. I don't see that yet, I think; for instance, the greens (esp the tank) clash with the reds. In the original game, I think the red-blue-yellow-b+w work well (but it's not a very original combination), and the greens clash there too. Quite subjective feelings, in fact. Anyway you can adjust it later, I believe. |

Oh, I totally see what you mean about the green and reds now. Do you think these tank colors work better?

Well, I have a general issue with reds vs greens, I think... ;)
Cyans would work better, I guess. You got me hooked now, I'm trying an edit. --- Dirty done in photoshop, just as a very quick test. 1st version: moved all greens toward cyans, hue +60. 2nd version: also moved reds towards magentas, hue +10, and yellows towards reds, hue -10, then removed some greens via curves (-10) to give some color to the greys. ![]() Edited by Manupix - 27 November 2009 at 2:37pm |

I would go with something more like this:
I think it would be easier for you to choose colors if you define first the background instead of the white one.. Apart from that you should start messing with the colours as Lollige mentioned. |
