Well, I think it just looks kind of... boring. The river goes at an even level, in a straight line, on a level field with uniform grass cut to a uniform length, under a clear sky.
If this is supposed to be something like a title screen, you need to make it look more inviting and recognisable: you need to add some characters, some trees, clouds buildings or whatever you want. You also need to make the title bigger and more interesting. Check out the title screen for the GB Zelda: http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/2196/296800-title_screen_super.jpg. Only 4 colours, yet so much more exciting. And it also conveys the theme of the game. Even if you are going for a bare look, there is no reason not to have a variety of flowers and weeds in the foreground and maybe some building and tree silhouttes on the far horizon. Basically, you need to break up the monotony. Go look up a riverside on Google and notice how river banks are filled with a variety of unique plants and other features: pebbles, small sandslides, etc. Also, there is a bit too little contrast between your colours. They kind of flow into each other too smoothly for the reader to appreciate the seperate pixels. Do you remember Kenpokis' WIP thread from some time ago? The subject matter was pretty similar to yours, you may want to check it out: http://pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9738 If you want a quick tip from me: sketch the thing out roughly on a piece of paper before you pixel it. It's always good to have a rough outline of what you want. |

Definitely needs more depth. Right now it looks like colored thick lines.
Font in generally boring too. Try bubble letters or something. Anything to make it more interesting :) |
