Decided to start pixeling again. I'm making characters for an RPG, and I think this one turned out nice, but the character looks too young. How can I make him look older, short of shrinking his head?

EDIT: 'Nuther frame, small tweaks. Now the second frame (left) looks like he shrinks. :/

it quite ok, but could easily be improve by aplying simpel pixel art techniques like selout and stuff ( see below...) ...
.... another thing id like to point out are colors....
your color ramps are very linear and therefore boring... if u look at real objects they most likely wont have one clean hue all over , for example the colors of the sourrounding reflect in the shadows and mix up with them... also a lot of ur colors arent needed, since theyre barely distinguishable. like the 3 lightest skin tones for instance.... try picking your colors thoughtful and efficient

... with sprites, u often have to exaggerate features to make them recognizable at once , especially on this small scale.... kinda play with cliches... like if ur going for an old guy, give him gray hair or balled head, a beard, different clothes etc etc.... urs look young now beccause of the hair-do, the shirt and the proportions of head and body.....

heres to illustrate

original- cleaned version - old guy.....

The last one's too old. xD The middle guy looks right. *goes to study it*

Now what did you mean by "selout"?

selout means selective outlining .... its a technique of actually 'sculpting' ur outlines... its kinda hard to explain... take a look at http://pixel-zone.rpgdx.net/shtml/tut-selout4.shtml - this tutorial for instance (there are others aswell...) to get an idea of it

I tried my hand at selout. Not quite sure of it, but at least I made him look older. Also, is it just me, or does he kinda look like a girl?
Also, -1 color ftw.

List of changes: head shrunk horizontally, tweaked colors, changed shirt pattern, changed shoulders, added selout, took away 1 color (white).
