CHALLENGE: ZOMGWEEKLYCHALLENGE4YUU!It's the 5th anniversary of the ../../../../forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1043 - Off-Topic Thread this week, so to celebrate, we want you to create 4 tiles that are better than Snader's.
These tiles can be anything you want, but they should actually be tileable. We're going to give you a bit more freedom though - there won't be any size restriction and they don't even have to be square - if that's your thing (isometric, hex, etc...). However, each tile must use at least the same colours as the original, see below:
First tile colours:
Second tile colours:
Third tile colours:
Fourth tile colours:
You may use other colours in addition to these colours, but each tile must at least contain its corresponding colours. Also, just to make it clear, you are just submitting 4 tiles on the same canvas, possibly on a transparent background.
Canvas Size - Unrestricted.
Colours - Total max 24. See the above explanation of colours.
Transparency - Optional. Only use transparency between tiles.
Animation - Optional.
CHALLENGE RULES- Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to /pixels/submit_icons.asp'>submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
- Only new pixels allowed.
- Open to all members.
- Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the /forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8'>WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.
CHALLENGE JUDGING- Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
- Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
- Winner announced the following week.
CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES- Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.
- Top finisher gets to call the following week's challenge...sweet.
- 'Participation' ribbons will be given for all who enter.
- No matter what happens you get challenged :)

Can we do something like this?

You need to follow the color restrictions.

just to be clear: you can add additional colours to the tiles so long as they still have the original 2/6 colours somewhere in their palette? also, can you do more than 4 tiles? and should you present it as an image using the tiles or just as a tilesheet?

@LB: Only as long as you include those compulsory colours! I also don't know if yours are tileable enough, "but they should actually be tileable"
@Randommonkies: Yup, max 24 colours. First tile needs to have #000000 and #00FF00, Second #000000 and #FF0000 etc. Just 4 tiles (you could submit more than one entry, or more tilesets+mockup in a no-entry submission though) You can lay them out like snader's originals, or with transparency in between (remembering that transparency is a colour)

What do you think?

@Jinn Woah, looking well, it looks 3D though until you hit the water, perhaps making the water meniscus line like a cube rather than a horizontal line would keep the 3D illusion. Love your work.
[EDIT]:Here is a quick mockup to show what I mean. The hexagon shapes and your current style makes the horizontal water look a bit flat and out of place.
Continuing the red trunk/lava/material as a dark blue form under the water might be cool (a "transparent" effect I mean)

Yeah, thanks Cilein! You really helped me!

Is it better now? and is worth to put in the competition?

You did all the work Jinn, that's looking great! There's something about the crystals that looks odd though, I think it's the use of that blue in them , the pure white or the magenta, it would look right if the rest of the palette was constrained in color count, but its not so it looks out of place. Try tweaking the colors/+ adding in another. It is worthy of entry, but I think you could tweak it a tad more to make it fitting of your skills

Okay. . . so I hate it when folks don't read the challenge directions carefully and now I think I'm one of those people. This probably isn't kosher, is it? If not I'll still put it in my gallery but not submit it to the challenge obviously. Wanted to run it by someone first. I'm still touching these up.

=edit=
Photobucket made the colors a little funny. I have followed the color guidelines.

@eliotfellow: haven't bothered to check the color restrictions, but they're definitely portraits and not tile-able tiles.

Mmk, just wanted to make sure before I got in trouble over in the public queue. I may bust out something else for the challenge over the weekend. Thanks cure.

I wanted to keep it pretty close to the original colours. Any opinions? I'm planning on making it a complete tileset-post competition.

The path could benefit from some more texture. Something doesn't seem totally right, I think its the detail and color count in the 4th tile compared to the others, making the rest seem blander. The blank red spaces count as a 5th tile do they not?
Possibly for the path tile blend with the reds in your palette more for texture, the magenta overdose stops it blender as nicely as the rest of the piece.
Keep it up, a full tileset post comp would be interesting, looking like a DOS game with higher res and better pixel pushing.
I like the idea for this comp, better make the time to try something myself!
@Jinn Lovely edit, one last thing now; the upper part of the big diamond almost looks pillow shaded ([EDIT]: I figured it out, its that the triangle of white reflection has a pink border, it should be white up to at least 1 edge, like the smaller crystals, you wouldn't get a triangular reflection within a face like that) I think there is too much white in that triangle, have a tinker with it and see if you agree. Still lovin' it

You know after re-reading the first page of the OTT I gotta say the PJ crew of olde responded in a very douchebaggy manner. -_-;
That being said I started something.
That being said I make not promises of finishing it.

Cure - maybe that's because my tiles were faces too?
Randommonkeys - looks really nice, that.
Cilein - red is this device's background color, and there are no tiles in those spots ;)
Greenraven - yeah, a bit. But I was kind of annoyed by his lack of information and not posting in the right section. By all means though, I fulfilled all the specific requirements he gave.
Now I'm not sure about something: is it fair if I join this challenge? Is it even possible? How can I make something better than I can make?

Oh okay, I thought that as transparency counts as a palette color, using gaps the size of tiles would count as tiles themselves. Interesting to know ;)
Go for it snader, it'd be good to see what you can come up with to top the old tileset!

Hey can somebody quickly tell me how to transparent this? I don't see how I am supposed to do this.
http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/6089/alphat.gif
(detail file) I intend to make the yellow transparent.
I tried iaza and uploaded it as a gif. (And a png to see if it helped) I then resaved it. I next started placing it into the pixleart page (upload page thing). I select transparent and send. I now find out both the detail file and the normal file are not transparent. Im sure this has been explained a hundred times, but I'm lost.
Thanks, crozier.
EDIT: spelling mistake :p
