Hi!

I've recently come back to pixel art. I am looking for some hard C+C so help me improve, and Pixelation isn't biting.

Note that the palette in the top right doesn't actually match up to the colours in the image any more!

The shell seems slightly small for it. If this isn't your reference then it's extremely close- http://www.naturephoto-cz.com/photos/others/roman-snail-21973.jpg - LINK

The part of the snail's underside where it raises up a bit is because it's going over a bump in the photo, but for yours it doesn't have any environment around it so it doesn't make a lot of sense visually to have that raised up.

Ah! Sorry, I forgot to post the reference. Yes that's the image (the first one that pops out on google search!)

Thanks! looking at it again I can see the shell/squishy bit ratio is a bit off.
I'll fix that!

And about the bump, you are absolutely right, but I was planning to add the background. I had a few stabs at drawing the background but I didn't like the result. The background in that image might be a bit too hard for my current experience level, though! . Maybe I will take your advice and flatten the bump, and put the snail in a different background. (or no background at all? baby steps ...)

Anyway, thanks for the input so far!!

the snail in the photo has more interesting colors, ranging from yellowish bumps in some spots to blue tints in other areas, like the eyestalks. head is too big for the body. you're omitting the little feelers by the mouth. the snail in the reference has a very interesting texture that isn't being translated into the pixel

Excellent, thanks!

Will work on those points.

One thing I am stuck with is the texture of the skin. Tried a few things but I'm having trouble replicating the same texture given the low resolution.

Any ideas? I might look around at other's pixel work and see if I can find any similar texture at low resolutions that I can steal .. uh ... borrow ideas from! :D

Way too monochrome, don't like (harsh)

well http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/47938.htm# - this piece is kinda slug-like.
I would just try to show the individual bumps. more like circles than dots, if that makes sense (too lazy to edit atm)
