At first I thought this was a weak challenge idea, but then google http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5187/5598057085_c1e25a69e4.jpg - showed http://www.boston.com/community/photos/raw/Sunset_near_Kaanapali.jpg - me http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-8CadDVSJU88/TW2t6a75ApI/AAAAAAAADgA/PQm4bpm2r-c/s320/290BLACKB%2526W.jpg - I http://www.globalgallery.com/prod_images/600/dev-nmp303.jpg - was http://fineartamerica.com/images-medium/majestic-elk-stoneridge-dana-bennett.jpg - wrong .

Mrmo Tarius, That's looking pretty sweet!

Here's my palette. Three high contrast areas with low contrast within the areas. Based on the idea of the palette above that has 2 areas of high contrast.
I did the last edit on it using the luminance scale in Lab rather than rgb values. I'll probably change this as I work, and maybe remove half the greys. Something like this-

You guys should use my favourite palette, you start at 0 and go up to 240 in multiples of 24. You should get 11 tones.

I decided to try something different. Perception causes the differences in certain areas of a greyscale to be more noticeable, even if the change is uniform. Here's an 8 color greyscale that should have a fairly uniform perceptual change in value even if the actual change varies between steps-
It's still not perfect yet, but I'll make a few more adjustments later.
Luminance in Lab, and the amount increased from the previous value-
8
18 (+10)
30 (+12)
44 (+14)
59 (+15)
73 (+14)
83 (+10)
91 (+8)

Still working on it :P
*edit* I am SO going to add color to this once the challenge ends :D

You seem to have transparent pixels here-
I think basically anywhere that you had pure white is acting like it's transparent for me in photoshop.

Now, that'd be something I messed up in Grafx2 :/
I'll go check, thanks for pointing it out :D
...Yup, White was set as transparent :P

I only just started doing pixel art the other day, so my skillz are not epic. Is this interpretation acceptable? I just want to know before I move further than framework.
Solar eclipse wip:

actually that resembles more an eclipse than a sunset :3 it's nice, though, finish it anyway xD

Well, from seeing what's in the other wips, I didn't know if I could force it into the guidlines. I'll probably just shelve it for now, and start on something else.
Just in case you couldn't tell (it got kind of jumbled up when I reduced it's size) it a shot looking up in a forest with the solar eclipse visible through the break in the trees.

Thank you very much! It may have something to do with me having finally found an amazing, intuitive and totally pixelart-oriented drawing tool (yeah, that'd be Grafx2) :D
I'm saving the final 20 or so wip-steps as a suprise, hehe :)

Hey, here is my wip. I know it's not impressive yet but I have to start somewhere. I like this challenge because I can focus on pixel placement and shading without dealing with the complexity of color.

DAMN YOU CLOUDS, YOU KILLED MY FATHER AND NOW YOU'VE COME BACK FOR ME.
Also, I'm aware that the palette I'm using has 17 colors. One of them will not be used / omitted.

Chibiwing, looking good. I like the windows, the hills seem kinda noisy though.

Okay, I doubt I'll work on this any more, so here's the complete wip process. You will notice that I occasionally forgot to save often (for example, when drawing the spaceships) so the wip-phases are kinda lacking there.
Any c&c before I submit this one?

Came out great, I thought the planet was huge before you added the guy though. Also, I just realized that the shadows suggest that the sun is very close. Still, great work.

Either that, or the view angle is extremely high :D
*edit* Anyways... phew! I submitted it. Added a rudimentary frame, and called it a day. Or five :)

Update! I'm almost certain I've made the poisoned wine/mead too shiny, but it was late and my judgement was off. ^_^'
Never really drawn shadows like this before, so I'm just guessing a lot on this thing. >_<

chibiwing, your poisoned wine looks like jelly. Make it look more like liquid. here's one reference.

Thank you, thank you! I went through four or five different styles of shine before a quit; now I can adjust it to look non-jammish.

Date Posted: 15 April 2011 at 10:15am
It really does not need that much shining. I like how you managed to make the glass of windows. Sun could be more white.

Okay, just to clarify, everything need to be original and never created before, right? so, copying landscapes is not that original =) I said it because it's a little bit hard to define itself, because it's very partial and sided for the side of who is looking. Like this thing, but does't matter, I'm saying it just to point that what everybody know but nobody care to write here. I think next time I'll look at one image and redraw it like the image above, in steps, so, may, it can convince everybody (or fool on everybody) =]
thx and nice to meet you.

English doesn't seem to be your first language, so I'm not one-hundred percent on exactly what you're saying. I think that a lot of us didn't look off of a photo for our lanscapes (I know I didn't, at least). Even if we did look off of a photo it would be fine because we're still having to create that picture by hand, out of pixels. What they meant was that the pixel art should be original work just created this week for this contest, which the sprite you had made before this week wouldn't qualify for. I also can't really find a sunset in what you posted (which is a cool piece). : )

I hope you can finish it in time! Based on what you did with your wip from last week, I'd say it'll be something to look forward to. :D

Well I finished, but it ended up a bit different than I planned since there's no clouds in the final. I just barely met the minimum color count. Without the color I used on 8 pixels for AA on the sun it'd be 7 colors, but it actually does make a visible difference to have that color there.
