CHALLENGE: The Lava Level

Design a single-screen mock-up of a new, original video game showing a level that includes lava.

Canvas size - Unrestricted.
Colours - Max 12. Must only include colours from the palette below:

Animation - Optional.
Transparency - No.


CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to /pixels/submit_icons.asp - submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the /forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8 - WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

  • Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.
  • Top finisher gets to call the following week's challenge...sweet.
  • 'Participation' ribbons will be given for all who enter.
  • No matter what happens you get challenged :)

Hey r1k,
It looks very good. The stones, the sky, I suppose the lava will later on as well....
but..
It looks a bit like 'routine work'.

You seem to already know how to align your pixels to create impressive reflections and clouds and rocks, than why start with the most unoriginal idea possible?
Any game that I have played with lava featured (cavelike)platforms with lava inbetween..

I challenge you to take your skill to the wild side! there is no need to even make a platforming game! Take an original perspective, original location, original lava source and stream, and then an original background!
I am sorry but clouds and rocks and a simple gap are not doing it for me...

well heres a rough sketch of something different

squirell knight versus lava spewing baby bird on tree tops?  Im imagining a cartoony yoshi's island type style.  I want to make it a platforming game though because I actual make games, and they have been in top down perspective for the last year or two, and Id like to do side scroller for a change.

Here's another simple gap! With rocky platforms! IT IS very ORIGINAL and has FIREBALLS. Bet you never seen THOSE before, eh? :) :)



basic tiles done, now on to detail stuff.

Play as the harlequin archangel Vohmai as she tries to build radiance at the peak of an active volcano. Tap the screen to dispatch a holy wrath or swipe at the screen to generate radiant shields. Calling down wrath will completely empty your radiance and clear the screen of entities/effects of level equal to or lower than the consumed radiance. Generating shields will drain your accumulated radiance, so use them sparingly. Levels are completed by achieving 100% radiance.

Why is she building radiance in such a volatile area? No one knows,,,

Comments or suggestions would help greatly?

uburur - i like the sketch, i like the description....but how and where are you going to fit lava into that image? the only way to tell there's even a volcano is from the accompanying text.

I'm thinking of entering this one. I haven't had a decent milestone at work recently and a short-term accomplishment should be good for my morale. Right now I'm torn between brighter and darker lava:



Very WIP still, a DnD/common fantasy concept, probably free movement in iso 4dir, more about the coop than the endless dungeon, although I have stuck to something vaguely resembling a tileset.

going for DS mockup, top screen will have stats and action log stuff. I like my environments too much to clutter them.

Currently just showing the arcane mage and barbarian. don't worry, there's a few more tricks up my sleeve come submission time.

I'd say go with bright lava, as it adds moar contrast! Or, go both- you can make some parts hotter (and therefore brighter) for variety :)
(or increase that frame speed and make it animated!)

I'm thinking of converting that huge scene into a slideshow-sort-of-thing, because it's never a good thing to show the whole level like this, and I need to fit it into a game-like HUD. I've a few ideas.

@adarias - lava gets hurled in from either sides of the screen,,, kinda weird ill admit xD Also, your sprites are so cute <3 I especially like the outline fading out before the feet.

also, i did an small update on the hud and, hopefully, better show where the lava is in the game

Still very much a WIP.. It's a side scrolling shooter! You are a super powered robot fireman who can FLY, and you were sent to extinquish this lava monster. Open for suggestions and such. :D

Here's my WIP.
It's a non-realtime tower defense game. You need to guard your lair from the cute but surprisingly resilient Blerps. Just a sketch at the moment.

@ deadpixeltean, maybe try either making the characters larger or shrinking the screen a bit, as theres currently alot of blank space that youll have to fill.

@ wuhu, that looks awesome.  Like a 3d game with pixel art graphics, loks like it would be fun to play.
