Check it out:

It's one of my first pieces that doesn't look terrible, imo. How can I improve? I think I want to add clothing next, but I'd also be somewhat interested in animating him and moving him in different directions.

About the hair: I think the second is better than the third.

I thought the hands and feet were too blocky, so I chopped a pixel off of each:

Advice appreciated.

EDIT: Clothes:

I like him. He's pretty basic, but he's good. Try adding some more to him now, like some armor or something like that.

here are some 16x16 sprites I made a while back, might be helpful.

Mine are more top-down (whereas yours is from the side). top-down is a more natural perspective, but I know roguelikes commonly have a broken perspective. I'd try to avoid the perspective issues commonly seen in roguelikes as much as possible though.

16x16 is a tiny canvas, but that doesn't mean there's not room for character. it just takes better management of pixel-clusters. you'll notice the sprites I posted have a lot of tetronimo shapes, or 3-pixel 'corner' shapes, etc. Proper managment of these tiny clusters is essential in creating a readable sprite that still contains information about the character. don't worry about shading at all, and remember the importance of abstraction. every pixel counts in something this small

I was actually trying for the top-down approach. Oops. I'll continue with this, but I'd also like to try other types of sprites, since it's clear that 16x16 is kinda small to start with. Big things are also kinda difficult, though (especially people, which is actually why I chose to start with these...).

Also, thanks -- those sprites are really nice.

EDIT: Clothes!
