CHALLENGE: Hero Splicer

Look at the image below and take a word from the left side then combine it with a word from the right. This will be your new and original superhero (or villain) that you are going to pixel for this week's challenge.

So for example, if you pick Orange from the left and Avalanche from the right, you'd end up with a character called "Orange Avalanche".

You can present your character however you like (standalone sprite, incorporated into a scene, a portrait), just as long as your character is the main focus of the piece.

One last thing, feel free to add the word "The" in front of your character's name. So, both "Masked Mantis" and "The Masked Mantis" are fine.

Canvas Size - Max 120 x 120.
Colours - Max 30.
Transparency - Optional.
Animation - Optional.

CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to /pixels/submit_icons.asp'>submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the /forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8'>WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

There's no way I'm giving this challenge amiss.

PROFESSOR CLAW...

The Masked Claw, along with his favorite weapon; a pair of deadly secateurs!

This is what I've done so far, I'd like some feedback and critics so I can do some edits on it before releasing it in the gallery

It took me ages to think of a combination but i finally chose orange claw... villain.

Vbs-rocha: I love what you have so far. I had the exact same idea, but I realized I didn't have the skills to pull it off. You certainly do.

Help please.

Should I:

A) Just work on picture A and try to refine it?
B) Create an animation that goes from pic B to pic A?
C) Create an animation that goes from pic B to pic C?

I think I'm going to make it avatar sized. So far it's not looking the way I had originally planned, so I might change the angle of the face before moving forward...

The masked calamity wip. I'm not certanly sure I understood both words correctly :) I see there is another MC, but there is only 16 variants of names so I can only add 'the' to his(or her?) name.
PS: Especially I'm going to rework last frame.

Do you think I should animate this? Would take 3-4 more frames I guess.

Well, this really only looks like a guy with a claw to me, not a professor with a claw. Right now it's more of a Wolverine with blue hair and no sideburns. And for a professor it also wouldn't make much sense if he was so buff.

@ VBS ROCHA

I believe that your cape is flowing in a really strange direction, almost looks like a protrusion of orangeness.

you could make it so that the cape flows down from the sides

sorta like this

I thought the exact same thing when I saw it. When you zoom in, you can see he has a bionic eye, which is the professor-aspect of it. Like Dr X in the Action Man universe. But I would suggest A) create more contrast between the skin and the bionic eye, so you don't have to zoom in to see it. And possibly B) give him white hair, so he looks a bit like an evil Doc from Back to the Future.

Also, I think his abs look a bit unnatural.

I can see why he would tell you to change the cape, but one thing I liked about your previous version was the comedic value.
No cape = less funny.
Cape hanging down = pretty normal
Unrealistic cape = kinda funny
Epic cape: kinda funny

EDIT: Actually, the sad, boring cape, hanging down like a wet towel is also pretty funny.

It's fine by me, but I'm not sure how that works with the competition. Anyway, I think you could probably do it better than my version. It doesn't look realistic, I just wanted to show a different direction

The criticism I was asking for was about the pixels, not the hero features. Most Marvel characters such as Hulk, are scientists and a "super hero" with a hunch back and glasses is not really my thing. I could've named it masked claw as well if that works better for you (note the visor on one eye).

It's better than the original, but it looks like you didn't use a reference when you drew this. Use Google, find a matching picture of a superhero with a cape, and try to imitate the way they draw the cape. You'll see the the shape of the cape and the way it's shaded is usually different from what you have done.

http://images.wikia.com/marveldatabase/images/8/8b/Doctor_Doom_003.jpg

Also, look at your superhero and try to imagine what he would look like without the costume. I think you'll find that one of his shoulders/arms is much lower down than the other.

It's like a sort of... aura? Like if you've seen the haunter sprite in pokemon?
Andyeah, I guess it is a sort superhero smiley
How can I improve, though?

In my humble opinion:
1) The lines look a bit messy with the antialiasing (?) technique you've used.
2) It's not easy to see that he's wearing a mask. It could also be seen as very big black eyes.
3) I'm not sure whether the lines below the mask represent a nose, a mouth or a chin.

That's not the point. The point is that as long as he's 'professor claw' and he's not really a professor at all but mostly just a guy with a claw, it doesn't really abide by this challenge's rules does it? Not to mention that it's hardly creative. These kinds of contests aren't only about pixel technique. People also vote for original ideas, especially in a contest like this where creativity is key.

Also, you post in this forum because you want critique. And when you ask for critique you can expect it on everything, including the hero's look. Especially if it has to do with the challenge's rules. Would be a bummer if you couldn't enter something you worked hard on now wouldn't it?

Nah I wouldn't really care. Most of us here to hone our skills anyways. The real bummer would be if I just dropped working on this. Do you have anything to say on the technical side, please?

Fair enough.

And I do.

It's got a few anatomy flaws. The whole torso area and especially the abs need a lot of work. Furthermore, his closest leg looks like it's broken from the ankle down. I also find the colours somewhat bland. Sure, they work, but they're nothing exciting either. I think this could also be done with a lot less colours. You're using 25 right now. I'd say 16 could just as easily do the job.

His closest leg looks a bit pilowshaded and the darkest colour is too dark, or the next to darkest not dark enough. The dark shade on the closest leg looks like smudge rather than an actual shadow. I'd say change one of those colours to make them blend a bit better, and take a look at some pictures of baggy pants to get a better idea of how to draw them. The top of the closest leg looks shiny and bland, next to the very busy lower part. That should also have some more folds if the pants are as baggy as they seem. And as last I also thought he was wearing shoes, until I noticed they were skin colours. They look to blocky and thick for feet, and his heels look like shoe heels. His eye visor also looks like a low eye rather than a visor. Maybe a dark outline or so to really separate it from the skin tones?

Besides all this I do kinda like it though. I like his stance especially.

Can you imagine how wide-set that guy's eyes must be under that mask?

As for the construction of the mask, what do you think is wrong with it? I don't really see anything...

Basically Elephant Man with a very bad fungal infection. Deadly at close range range from all the spores released by the fungi. Clearly a bad guy.

@Frogger5; you have 30 color limit for this challenge. Add 2 lighter tones of gray and make a modest highlight on certain places of the abs. Shade the opposite. Also make sure that you strictly apply your lightsource on the body. (at the moment it seems to be coming from right but the right side of the chest is shaded).

So now you're ignoring my technical advise which you asked for completely as well, and just submit it without even replying? I took the time to analyse your work and give you some feedback, but obviously I'm wasting my time here.

@dpixel; excellent edit dude, good tips on the chest and trousers, thanks!

@mrmo tarius; it's the archenemy of wall-e, so it's a villain.

So now you're ignoring my technical advise which you asked for completely as well, and just submit it without even replying? I took the time to analyse your work and give you some feedback, but obviously I'm wasting my time here.

I completely disagree on most of your criticism and more importantly I find neither your critique nor your tone constructive. I'm not interested in what your trying to do either, and I'd rather not enter a quarrel and occupy this thread.

I'll agree that I was being rather harsh there, but I stand by what I said.
Here, I've made an edit to demonstrate what I mean. Edits don't take tones after all (:

I still would've like to done more, but I didn't have the time for that. I've reduced the colours to 19 by the way and with some more time I'm sure it can be done with 16. Also, I couldn't get his feet to look right either. Maybe with some more time, but feet really are damn annoying. I tried to fix the anatomy a bit as well, but I'm not a real hero at that. Still, I think it should be somewhat better like this.

So ok now that we have a friendlier environment, first of all thanks for your time. The guy is supposed to have shoes and I think it's readable that way in the second picture I've posted. Why it's the same colors with the skin is just to reduce the color count.

The torso is much dirtier like this, don't know if it's intentional. With all the AA removed from the skin it doesn't look as smooth as it should. Rather it looks like covered in mud. The darkness under the human arm is probably the only thing I can consider a correction here.

The mechanical arm looks rusty now but it sure is a nice touch. It looks cooler like this yet it wasn't my intention to make a rusty arm. Yet again why not? Also the small part that connects it to the body made it more convincing. Good job on that.

The face looks deformed and it doesn't belong to the "clean past, insane present" muscular guy. The touch on the visor is cool, love it.

About the shading of the trousers, you've called my version smudgy yet you've managed to make it even smudgier. The calfs of muscular or fat people are usually so thick that they don't allow wrinkles or folds on the trousers. Apart from that the gravity should have sticked the cloth to the skin. Your version looks he spilled some oil on himself, rather than a pair of wrinkled or folded trousers.

In total you've got some points but we don't agree on everything, not to mention your earlier post had much harsher criticism like pillow shading and dull coloring etc, which I find disheartening at best. Ok so, thanks for taking your time. I don't know if it would be realistic if I said I'll go back to fix the piece. I hope we've resolved the hostile atmosphere.

Slightly reminiscent of the Atomic Calamity, but I do think yours look good. And the whole nuke = rising sun is good. Maybe I would place him a bit lower, with his feet firmly in the black.

Here's my entry:

Professor K. Lamitty, better known by the name Professor Calamity. A scientific genius and utterly mad sociopath. And I know what you're thinking: "How on earth did he come up with his supervillain alias?" Well the answer is a superhuman level of creativity.

I need help with the metal on this guy. The giant grey things are supposed to be metallic claws. Some will be extensions of his floating ribs, which he'll have two extra rows more than would a regular human being. He will soon be the Masked claw (no I didn't forget the arms.)

Here's the picture.

Can someone help me out?
