CHALLENGE: Hidden in Geography

Use these simplified shapes of France and Sweden to create something using either http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/23265.htm - Manupix 's or http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/16472.htm - Noet 's http://www.pixeljoint.com/2010/09/10/3266/16_Color_Winners.htm - award winning palettes.

In the red corner, we have Manupix's palette, from France.

And over in the blue corner we have Noet's palette, from Sweden.

Special thanks to http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/17621.htm - Jinn for the idea of using country shapes as a pixel art canvas. Here are two examples to illustrate the idea.

Canvas Size
- Use one of the templates above. You may rotate or flip the canvases as long as you don't distort any pixels while transforming the shape ie. you need to just stick to rotating at 90 or 180 degree angles.
Colours - Max 17. Use only colours from your country's palette shown above (plus transparency). So, if you pick Manupix/France, use the first palette; if you pick Noet/Sweden, use the second palette. No palette swapping.
Transparency - Required. Must only be used outside your chosen country's shape.
Animation - Optional.

@Jeremy: I really like the mask in the top left corner of France.

And which of the two of Sasuke's choices did you say "yup" to?

My first time using a restricted palette. I'm so horribly lost. :/ But I really want to learn to use palettes better, so I'm trying to tackle it as best I can.

i couldnt help it--when i looked at the shape of france i saw this huge guy with his 50-th haircurl and the hillariously small feet.. either needs to go pee (therefore holding his belt) or trying to make a fancy dance pose ;)

He's just roughly colored to lock the shapes. Dont know if i have the time to finish him, but for the sake of it.. posted ^.-
and hopefully noone in france feels insulted.. as this version doesnt make the country look very heroic... =)

Don't know what to do with green area:[

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 22 November 2011 at 1:30am
Perhaps a swirling cloud effect? It'll be small, but at least it'll fill the spot.

Posted By: Calv
Date Posted: 22 November 2011 at 2:38am
I think incorporate the green into the design, maybe armour on his shoulder and an axe/weapon on his back for the green on the right.
All Looking good so far, I wanna do something for this challenge but, I don't think I'll have time.

This could be a running theme going through all the countries.

What about some coral in the left?

Posted By: codewarrior
Date Posted: 22 November 2011 at 3:12pm
@ dpixel:
how about "corals" lots forms of them have tones from orange to red. And it would fit the water-theme u started. Not to mention they'd prolly offer good transitions to the other adjacent colors as of their colorvaration and shapes.

Speaking of the shapes those might also be usefull to fill the uneven free spaces / the country shape.

Thanks guys.  That's a pretty good idea.  Whether I can pull it off is another story (At least making it look like coral).  *Off to do some research*

@ member_profile.asp?PF=20918&FID=1 - a3um :

I'm not only struggeling with his palette, Sweden has got a difficult shape too. If I weren't from Sweden myself  I'd go with France. Gotta reprecent, you know.

Posted By: MrBeast

Horrible, I know.

The palette is good for very small sprites I think, but at this size the other palette gives way more depth and possibilities.

Posted By: dpixel
Date Posted: 23 November 2011 at 12:01pm
@Kravvon -  Thanks for the complement, but it's not easy for me at all.

Corral Added:

It seems to look better at 2X.  Still working at it though.

Well, still VERY rough above and below the head, but here's my WIP. hoping to actually finish it sometime. I dont enter enough of these challenges (this will be my 2nd, and ive been here a while lol)

Darn that palette for having no reds though. I'm going to have a heck of a time making that read as a giant leg of meat with a bite in it.

First pixel piece I've ever posted, for some reason the challenge inspired me to create an account and give it a go:

Probably not the best pallet to practice with, since I am kind of a newbie. I think I hit a road block with the beard, and I think that the duck on top is going to be harder than I though. Maybe I should wait until the challenge is over to start up a wip thread and spend some time to properly practice lol.

Okay, haven't been working on this as much as I probably should have but the damn duck and beard have been giving me so much grief.

I'm starting the think I should lighten up the face a bit since there's now two sections of birght orange. Hopefully nothing needs any major re-vision at this point. Also, I tried to dither parts of it, I was dead against dithering but I think somethings needed smoothing out and I wasn't sure how else to go about it.
Man, this is so frustrating and fun at the same time.
