Hello,

So I decided to begin my first work regarding pixel art, and I decided to draw a plain old rock. The source of light is roughly 3π/4 radians from the horizon, and I used this image for reference (with the exception of coloring, which I made brown).

Anyway, here it is:

I basically figured that since I don't know where to start, a rock is as good as anything else. I really am naïve when it comes to art, so feel free to blast me.

colorwise the ref is much more interesting, has some warm brownish tones on the left , bluer greys toward the middle, and neutral grey on the right. maybe even some purplish tones toward the top. monochromatic brown is pretty boring.

I think you're over dithering here as well. I'd worry more about fields of opaque color (pixel clusters), with more sharply defined edges and contrast between planes.

I have taken your advice and tried to apply a color scheme which is similar to the reference. I also avoided dithering and used opaque color. The reference is the same object.

Looks better already, but that's a tough subject.  The color differences of the rock can both enhance and obscure the planes.  I suggest you render it monochrome first, then add the color differences after you're finished.
