This is my first ever post on here, and my first proper attempt at pixel art after being interested and lurking for a while

Please let me know what you think, what i'm doing wrong or right etc!

Well it's not bad at all. Although you could smooth this out with some more AA and some saturation, it doesn't seem like you need too many tips. Still I advise you to check out some pieces for colors, e.g. http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/25911.htm - this .

Thanks very much, I will try to do what you suggested - The colours on the piece you linked are great - Actually, colours are my weakness, i have no idea about pallettes or anything.

Also, I just looked at your gallery - you are seriously talented, thankyou for taking the time to help me.

Colors seem to be everyone's weakness when they're new to pixelling.  ^_^  They're certainly one of mine.

Here's my progress. I don't like the hair, but I'm not sure what to do about it.
I also decided to use my palette for the other contest to test it out. I may change it if it doesn't work.

I think your eye looks way to blank and reflective it looks like the eyes of a dead or blind person.

did an edit:
Looking quite solid otherwise, good technique!

Hey, another challenge! Well, here's what I've got so far:

The rules didn't say it had to be realistic, so of course I have to do something crazy with it.
Not sure whether it looks better with the makeup or without it, though.

Posted By: cure
Date Posted: 29 November 2011 at 7:51pm
make the features before the makeup, so you know where the makeup goes. (i.e. draw the eyelids)

WIP

I know there's been a few eye pic's already. But I just love drawing eyes It's using the same 8 colour palette as my avatar.

I have an idea for a "twist", which is, letting the eye reflect another face. But I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to draw that with the limited palette :/

Edit:

Looks less stiff this way maybe?

I'm disappointed by the ideas suggested still being quite far from the face... this challenge is quite tempting to go towards abstraction, rather than central compositions on specific features of the face, which is the most obvious thing to do.
I am impressed by the technical quality of the entries though!

I don't like this; any ideas?

Posted By: Mrmo Tarius

Idea: you can try and draw the eye from the side, suggesting the inner structure of the iris and glassy transparence of the cornea.
(that's what I'd do if I had the time) :D

In the meantime, here's a face, made from tiles and kinda-sorta refined. a bit.

It has no contrast. And the light source seems a bit ambiguous. But whatever :D

I'm not sure I understand what you mean when you say the ideas so far isn't "face" enough. Could you elaborate on that? I mean isn't f.ex. ingl0rius' or Jeremys pics focusing on "central compositions on specific features of the face"?

I have a technical suggestion. The pupil is always at the center of the iris. Right now the shape of the iris is suggesting something else. The top looks like it's extending further behind the eyelid than the bottom. Maybe you could try to make the top and bottom more symmetrical?

I'd really like to show you what I mean with an edit. But last time I edited someones entry it started a discussion on whether that was allowed or not in a challenge entry.

Hmm... good point!

I think I somehow made it worse... I should probably change the angle of the nose a little so it's a bit more of a side view, to accommodate the shape of the eye.

I am so bad at this. tried to do something creepy with the eyes and it just looks... well BAD! I'm going to erase them and try something else. Anyway the origional intention was it to be Glokta from Joe Abercrombie's The First Law book series.
I attempted to use the 20 colour pallet I've made for the pallet challenge. Turns out really hard for me to use on a bigger piece than the isology collab size.

@Graindolium, Some of your WIPs are more classic portraits than 'ULTRA-close-up'. Keep yourself in check, k.

I'd go with the last one.  Just looks the most clean.  I find the increased shading in the others to detract from the cleaness, and doesn't really add much more depth.

No. 2 haven't gotten any positive feedback. So that one is out of the game. Usually that means there's fewer to chose between. But these green faces multiply with frightening speed! Even though I kill half of them the growth is still exponential.

Please review the following specimens and chose the ones to kill. Tell me which you like the best too if you want. But more importantly, tell me which you don't like, and I'll get rid of them.

here's a color edit.

upped the warm/cool contrast a bit by moving away from the blue/green/yellow palette and moving the highlights closer to pink and the shadow closer to purple.

Thanks for the tip! It might sound strange, but I feel your edit has given the pic too much depth. It kinda supposed to look flat and stencil-like. But your right about widening the colour range, so I made two versions.
