I was thinking doing angels walking on clouds, what do you guys think ?

something like this:

How exactly is that unexpected weight? You normally see angels doing that.

Posted By: philippejugnet
Date Posted: 02 January 2012 at 5:30pm
If you sit on a cloud you would fall down...

Posted By: CPearson
Date Posted: 02 January 2012 at 5:51pm

This is pretty much the most common angel imagery there is, not unexpected in the least.

Posted By: mdog95

I was thinking somebody looking up to see a piano falling on them, the piano blowing up, and a small piece of shrapnel crushing him. We'll see if I actually have time to even start that.

Thanks CPearson, this will help!

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 02 January 2012 at 7:45pm
I don't think you understand. It's not unexpected. Angels have wings anyway. They can "sit" wherever they want, not just a cloud.

Posted By: philippejugnet
Date Posted: 02 January 2012 at 7:50pm
so a bird sits on a cloud because she have wings? or they sit or they fly.. in this case they are sitting

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 02 January 2012 at 7:56pm
How many pictures have you seen that shows an angels falling through a cloud he tried to sit on? It's expected that an angel will be able to sit on a cloud, even if it is a physical impossibility. What would be unexpected is that an angel falls through the cloud, seeing as how we don't see that many references of angels falling through clouds. This challenge says unexpected weight, not real weight, which would support your case. However, in your case the your view of unexpected is expected, so you have to do the unexpected by doing the expected...wow, that's a little confusing...

Posted By: AirStyle

Actually, you know what? Do what you want. I'll just leave it up the admins to decide this. Don't feel like discussing this anymore.

Birds don't sit on clouds because they are a real animal. On a cloud (heaven) is literally the most likely place for an angel to be. Falling through a cloud would be unexpected for an angel.

wait that means I can or I cant do the angel? since an angel falling on a cloud is unexpected?

if no... thats ok for me to do an angel falling in a cloud?...

@mdog95: How about just having the piano floating in the air above his head? The other idea seems a bit much, unless you're planning on animating it, in which case.........you have my blessing...

I was planning on animating it. It's why I'm questioning whether I'll have time to make it or not... It'll be cool if I do. If not, I'll think of something else that will take less time to make on Saturday :P

would be cooler if the kid were bumping the sumo guy out with his gut or something. right now I think 'unexpected force' rather than 'unexpected weight', due to the emphasis on the kid's push rather than him displacing the sumo due to mass.

7 colors, do you think its worth adding more?

Posted By: AirStyle

Yes. I can barely tell what that is, even knowing it's an angel. You might want to make both the cloud and the angel larger so we can really enjoy the hilarity!

basic WIP. not sure about the palette, i'm kinda just trying random colours as i go. CC would be appreciated.

edit: Btw it's an Ark shipwrecked on clouds. There's an angel in the little boat which i might just remove, and focus on the actual ship.

edit: still not sure about these colours, but i added some more detail

edit: ffs forgot about max 20 colours, i'm at 30 :(

edit: nerfed some colours, and the angel. I think it's more unified now, though i think the boat is now a bit harsh.

Could still use some CC

I don't know if I am going to be able to finish it in time.......

how do angels fall from sky...

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 05 January 2012 at 6:40pm
It depends on what time you're capturing them falling.

When sitting down, the first thing that will happen is the angel will simply lean back and fall through, face-up. Then, as he falls through the sky, the wings will catch the air, and cause the angel to flip over.

Or, if the wings are limp, which I couldn't possibly know, they would just stay lying on their back.

Just a 2 min' scribble from a new guy showing how he thinks an angel would fall:

Although i would imagine it to either:
-Fly off.
-do crazy spins in mid air while trynig to fly.
-or in this case, limp wings/unconscious.

All palettes are looking very monochromic, I would suggest to hue shift some colors. And the sunset is not very believeble because of the low contrast.

Did you save it in .png? or Jpg? Apparently in .png, "artifacts" are saved with the file, making the file seem like it has more colors than what it does. Codewarrior had the same problem in the IsoAk project. Save the file in .gif format, and the problem should cease. I doubt you did it in JPEG, but just in case, JPEG saves in compression, so information is lost during the saving.

I don't know why, but .png is giving people a hard time now. I haven't had a problem with it? Does anyone know if there's more than one way to save in .png format?

Ugh I've done something stupid - I've been working on the png instead of my .psd in photoshop, so I'm stuck with the colours (wont solve by re-saving) Is there any way I can reduce the colours automatically or hunt down the rogue ones?

I really would like to enter this piece but i don't want to break rules obviously

.png has never given me problems before. I always get only the colors I use...

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 07 January 2012 at 5:45pm
@ingl0rius: I only have one other option: point...and...click... :\

Click over each pixel, and make sure that it's the right color.
Sorry it's not much help, but it's all I got. If you have the color replacement tool, or if you use GraphicsGale, which has a color replacement tool, and a color-counter (love that thing!), you could fix it. Either way, though, you'll still have to...point...and...click. :\

@mdog95: Yeah, I haven't had that problem much either, except for that one time when I saved in .png in PaintDotNet, and opened it in GraphicsGale. ~64 colors turned into 304!. Crazy stuff. All I can say on that is stick to one program when working on a project.

Posted By: jeremy
Date Posted: 07 January 2012 at 6:52pm
@inglori0us: if you change image mode to RGB, then indexed, you should get a prompt for how many colours you want. If you know how many you had, just input that (it's 20 or under, obviously) and it *should* be back to normal.

Posted By: mdog95
Date Posted: 07 January 2012 at 7:37pm
@Airstyle

Yes, paint.net is crap. I use Grafx2 and GIMP, depending on the project. I find animating a lot easier with GIMP, but general pixel art is much easier and faster in Grafx2. They both save .png and .gif the way they should be, and GIMP can save an animated PNG, not that it would be necessary since pixel art shouldn't be anywhere near 256 colors in one piece :P

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 07 January 2012 at 11:17pm
I would use GIMP, but I don't like the way they handle their palette (can't dynamically manipulate it: have to "graph" it to the picture via gray-scale and whatnot). The animation set-up in GIMP seems too confusing. Those are the two things that made me use PaintDotNet, since you could download a animation plugin, and dynamically change the palette. However, Graphics Gale has Onion Skin, which is what pretty much sold me...unless I'm wrong about GIMP, and it's easier than what I've seen...

Posted By: Jafhar
Date Posted: 08 January 2012 at 3:42am
Just for the superman colour correction, if you have paint.net you can easily use the fill tool and reduce/increase the tolerance to fill in areas with the same colour even if they are of different shades.

I have not done the clouds, an elephant is flying above the clouds with a balloon, see:

The pallete is mine. Help to make skys and the elephant?

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 08 January 2012 at 12:18pm
Addressing the elephant, if the balloon is carrying all of its weight, the elephant needs to be centered underneath the balloon (or, at least, his center of mass), and in a dangling body position. Right now, he looks like he's standing on the ground, even if the ground is not there.

Also, make sure you're only using 20 colors. I counted your palette, and it's WELL over.

I'd also like to add that the string on the balloon should be tight if it's pulling him upwards
