It should be a character you've created during this week for the challenge, so no. Sorry.

I'm in the same boat than Connor. I'm working in a game and the dead line is the same than this challenge, and I still have to do the winning animation (one for each character, so they will be 5)... Almost perfect challenge to me. Too bad it's not allowed :(

Right! I made this guy:

(obviously inspired by Delicious' works.)

...now, the tough part ;/ I'm thinking of making him burst into flames or something :D

Righto! Here's something I pixelled just for this.

(Looks best at 2x)
A sidescroller character, where you play as a evil orc with shoulder guards. So far, I'm using 10 colors. But I can't really decide the animation I should do. Maybe a really over extended roar or something. He doesn't quite look right though. I think he needs a loincloth or something... Maybe he's too small. Dang.

*EDIT* I'm rather awkward with drawing anything larger than 32x32 and what with the limits of the screen being so... large I don't really think I'll manage something much larger very well. I think over the next week I'll just hope that something gets put together somehow. Or maybe I'll just finish the original orc.

No idea where I'm going with this, but I've made that guy modular, so I should be able to pull off some sort of animation :)

Put simply, you should start with a beginning and end position, work out any key moments between so you get develop the overall motion of the animation, concentrating on the timing and consistancy.

It's a mistake to animate like you would read a book, frame by frame until the end. Think of it more like you are developing the whole structure from ground up in simple key frames, refine the motion before focusing the detail.

There's a lot more to take into consideration but if you are to take a stab at animation I'd definately firstly advise starting with a handful of frames, and once it's on track smoothen up the motion by adding your in-betweens.

I (half)disagree with this, I don't claim to be the best or even good animator, but for me, it's easier to go frame by frame. With key frames, I felt that I'm not going into the right direction with the filler frames and then started "fixing" the key frames and the whole animation blew apart.

I'd suggest trying which way is easier for you, and use that style, like in any creative hobby.

If you'd rather practice frame by frame trial and error that's up to you and I don't blame you becuase at first that's what I did. I agree that initially it's the most comfortable way to go about it, you want to create it in the order as what you'd be watching it it's a more natural way to see it.

But in order to maintain some consistancy, in regards to proportions, timing and style I find it's crucial to have some form of structure otherwise you're just deliberately making it hard for yourself.

I also found that breaking an animation down into simpler tasks lets you get closer to the hows and why's of the animation involved and allows you to correctly practice known animation methods with more control.

Each to their own I suppose  any animation is ok in my book, as long as you are making progress and understanding what you're trying to achieve.

I've created my character, just hope I can animate it OK!

EDIT: Animation so far:

Need to put these two moves together which has proven harder than it looks. Need to work in a few more frames to get the transition to look smooth.

EDIT 2: Finished (for now at least!):
