And I'm working on a 2nd entry with a butterfly and candle:

this is my first entry, I am new to this... what do you guys think?

Wanna try and go 3 colors but will probably cave in and add more.

whoa, totally forgot that the 13th 'color' must be transparency :/
Oh well, here's a more or less finished portrait:

Made this template using L-shaped clusters in case anyone is interessted.

Warning, the "grid" is highly irregular.

This more or less accidently happened during the process, will probaply be my "backup piece" in case I don't get a decent Idea.

@Voltali obscur: Cool idea... Some diamonds maybe in the back.
@mrmo:  superb as usual!
@Nevercreature: it's crowded in here, nice.
@9_6: 3 colors=9-6, and wow!

When seeing the theme i wanted to join in and try to make a boulderdash remix. So i'm currently working with 8x8 tiles, here's a small preview. I'll try to have the diamonds glow on the surrounding tiles... The layout is same as level 3 on the commodore 64.

@kantankerous mind
Looks nice, almost as if it was going to be an entry in the previous challenge (noise), cuz the guy is holding his ears.

I've changed around a few things, how's it look? :)
11 colors including the purple background around the diamond.

My first attempt using diamond (cross) pixels and using 4 colours:

I used this template:

Kind of really bad. Can anyone even mildly recognize what is portrayed?

Honestly I'm not even going to submit it because it's horrible.

@orange08 - Your idea of diamond pixels is way better, may give that a go instead.

Well here's something.

I struggled with the rocks, namely giving them a good texture and getting depth between the foreground and background ones. The whole thing is a little flat, actually. I think I'll try again :| How might I improve this one?

Oh and I used this palette, with a few colors omitted to fit the challenge: http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12795

Added some simplified rock patterns in the back.

Which version looks better for the colors please?
or ?

VERY WIP. So ignore the fail colors. I just wanted to share my idea lol. It's a Minecraft cave with a diamond block at the center. Will probably add Steve and a creeper.

I decided not to use evenly sized blocks because I felt it limited the shape of the room too much, and there's not much space.

Later: got some colors, added a torch and tried to shade it so that it looks shrouded in darkness. I need to move the torch and have another go at it, but now I'm off to bed (lava was replaced by water so no light from that).

Date Posted: 28 February 2012 at 9:59pm
@cure - Well at least it was partially readable then. =|

Gave up on the diamonds though:

Hair is unfinished and I haven't touched the BG but added some AA because the jaggies were pissing me off even though I know I still had to fill in that area. =D

@Voltali obscur@ - I honestly don't like the weird rock texture as it kills the depth of the image.

@Graindolium - Add some damn purple in there man!

@Mrmo Tarius@ - Damn that's awesome!

@iMoose - Removes i from name... I mean... rocks generally look better when they don't feel smooth. Imagine them made up of flat surfaces.

I've only just started. At first I was going to make a window, but then I thought it'd be interesting to make something leaning. The basic plan is a mario style castle, but maybe with something to show that it's leaning. Maybe someone falling off the top.

you can edit things up until the deadline, but not after once voting starts. I think the thing about final art is that all submissions, whether for the contest or not, are supposed to be finished works. The second rule of submitting work here says "No works in progress (WIPs). We're not too strict on this one...just don't submit half finished pieces." Of course this very thread is meant for the unfinished works for this contest. :)

@tanuki: yeah, I know, so I just chose the pj default gray. It started out as a square manhole-ish thing so the gray border would be where the cover would fit. Then I thought it might be fun if it looked like the pic was outside the diamond. Kinda like an easter egg :P

@iMoose: looks lovely!

Are you aware that the template is lopsided?

Top corner is at X46, bottom at X45, left at Y46 and right at Y45. I think the template should either be 89˛ or 91˛, or have doublewide corners - to make it symmetrical.

This challenge seems to lend itself well to portraits, all looking really good, in particular I like -

Voltali obscur and the little guy in the wagon cart
Nevercreature and all the facey blobs
orange08, that candle and butterfly reminds me of the spectrum, in a good way
kantankerousmind, could be general zod in the phantom zone, which was my original idea.
bgraybr, I like the isometric idea.
failureboy, the heraldry is also nice.

So far I have -

Very much WIP and I think I may need to go through the rookie tutorials (edit - again) to make this good enough to call finished.

I have to say, Grain, that since you've been collaborating with the other members of PJ, your art style has really flourished past that of elaborate placement of triangles. Congratulations on working hard to develop your own sense of style, and being uniquely inspired by the world and it's people to create shocking, mainly weird-looking (:P), works of art.

Got this today (start of cave L in BoulderDash II):

The anim is going too fast and i'll try to add glow around diamonds... Making an animation is a bore, otherwise a run through the whole level would have been cool.
Not very good, but was fun to do (8x8 tiles is really tiny) and might lead me to level 2 (hi FailureBoy ;p )... C&C welcome.

@iMoose: your diamond shine is so much better!

What I have for my second entry thus far:

Inspired by this quote from Friendly in Joe Abercrombie's novel 'Best Served Cold':

The dice came up two and one. Three years ago today, Sajaam bought Friendly’s freedom from Safety. Three years he had been homeless. He had followed three people, two men and one woman, all across Styria and back. In that time, the place he had hated least was the Thousand Swords, and not just because it had a number in its name, though that was, of course, a good start.

I'm thinking of having the BG to show a silhouette of three guys (one being Friendly) and a girl walking away from a prison.
