Meh, been too long since I played with pixels. I'm a bit rusty, I'm afraid. :( I really shouldn't have used such a giant canvas size, but too late now.

And a3um blows my mind as usual. :D

You aren't grasping the theme of the challenge. The image must have

Crepuscular rays

Refer to the link in the challenge description.

Posted By: philippejugnet
Date Posted: 03 April 2012 at 3:55pm
it have to come from the sun/moon? - -'

Posted By: cure
Date Posted: 03 April 2012 at 4:10pm
I can't explain it to you any better than the link itself does

Crepuscular rays are http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_%28optics%29 - rays of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunlight - sunlight that appear to radiate from a single point in the sky, specifically, where the sun is. These rays, which stream through gaps in clouds or between other objects, are columns of sunlit air separated by darker cloud-shadowed regions.

Or just type "crepuscular rays" into Google Images.

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 03 April 2012 at 4:19pm
SO yeah, they must come from the sun.

Posted By: shampoop
Date Posted: 03 April 2012 at 4:28pm
can the rays come from heaven?

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 03 April 2012 at 4:35pm
is "heaven" in the sky? And seeing how it's called "God-rays" I would say yes, but it's up to the admins to decide.

Posted By: cure
Date Posted: 03 April 2012 at 5:43pm
you can show Jesus Christ descending on a cloud with crepuscular rays shooting from his face, just pixel some crepuscular rays.

Next W.I.P. Cloud are still a little rough.

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 03 April 2012 at 9:50pm
too much dithering. Try a more simplistic look, and see how it looks.

Posted By: Mrmo Tarius
Date Posted: 04 April 2012 at 3:58am
Well, here's a wip. Tried to keep it simple, should use 6 or so colors.

It also has a dragon, I guess.

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 04 April 2012 at 5:50am
It's about time you showed up, Mrmo! Nice WIP.

Posted By: philippejugnet
Date Posted: 04 April 2012 at 7:46am
should I try this then?

I need to add some nature in it and something under the water;)

Posted By: philippejugnet

update i think its better

Posted By: Jinn
Date Posted: 04 April 2012 at 8:54am
Por que desistiu do dragão? ele estava bem bacana. Era só inserir os raios vindo por de trás dele, ou algo assim...

Posted By: Nevercreature
Date Posted: 04 April 2012 at 11:44am
Next W.I.P.

I like this dithering. Do you think I should change some colour of the palette? (17 colours)

Posted By: Graindolium
Date Posted: 04 April 2012 at 11:49am
little WIP !

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 04 April 2012 at 11:55am
@NeverCreature: ...That's 17 colors? Whoah! Yeah, you might want to do something about that. And not ALL of the dithering needs to go. I was talking mainly about the noise in the center of the bluer parts of the cloud. Seems unnecessary in my opinion.

@Graindolium: What's with all the creepy stuff?

@NeverCreature: UPDATE: Oh, now I see why. Forgot the shafts of light doubles your color count. I think you're fine. Still think the dithering needs some work, though.

a3um - it looks like we're going down a very similar path in terms of subject matter. however it should be worth noting that i went the opposite approach - less evil/dark, more natural/light. should be interesting to see how your piece finishes up. the composition is very nice :)

Posted By: ceciltheawesome
Date Posted: 04 April 2012 at 2:02pm
@Jeremy crepuscular rays come from the sun, not the son. See what I did there? I'm sorry, I had to.

I'm thinking I'm going to go for some "holy crap", a cartoon-ish piece of poop with some rays on it. Any thoughts?

Posted By: cure
Date Posted: 04 April 2012 at 2:19pm
That description doesn't sound like a crepuscular ray. Not every ray is a crepuscular ray.

@Jinn - Valeu cara ;) vc é exelente.

Grandolium, you would be a great artist for the band Tool

Philippe, I always love your scenes, but it seems like you have a consistent problem with pillow shading, which really hurt the look of your cool scenes.

Posted By: philippejugnet
Date Posted: 04 April 2012 at 4:43pm
yes I know =/ I think I will just add the rays comming from the fire. then the pillow shading should look fine

Posted By: Erstus

Here's my sketch. Not sure, if i can finish it.

Posted By: philippejugnet

I guess the rays should look fine now:

from the sun.

@cecil: it was just a joke response to cure :p

Posted By: ceciltheawesome
Date Posted: 04 April 2012 at 6:33pm
@Jeremy Yes, I realize it was a joke, I was trying to make a clever pun, however an unfortunate typo kinda ruined it. The second sun was supposed to be son.

For inspiration : Frank Sauer's work on the game Agony (1992)

Well, I've added a few more colors. Still quite far from the challenge restriction, though :)

*edit* current version

I don't know what to do anymore, so I'm going to post it here, hope someone says something about it, and go back to it later.

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 06 April 2012 at 8:19am
...what is it exactly? I see the multicolored areas of sunlight, but I don't know what's going on in the bottom left and bottom right corners of the pic. What you could do, though, to justify the God-rays, is to add a sparse amount of cirrus stratus clouds and have shafts of light pierce through them. I like the overall color scheme, but I can't give much more critiquing without knowing what this is exactly.

Hey, all. I meant to post this here yesterday but I sorta ran out of time. Anyhow, here goes:

Since I recently snapped my left wrist had surgery on my left wrist, I figured I'd try to take up pixeling. I figured I'd take a crack at this challenge after reading some stuff on how to create, and color properly.

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/7/sraysentry.png/

As you can (hopefully, if the upload worked x.x) see, I am already having some big problems with my image. I managed to clear all of the jaggies from the smaller circle, but I have no idea where to start with the larger one. If you guys have any suggestions as to where to start, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks,
Jacob

(If anything in this post sounds... well stupid, I apologize in advance, as I currently am on some pain killers. )

I wanted to have the water being sucked in up to one point. The sun is supposed to be dying in an expolosion, emitting all the energy, but I am yet to add the rays which will be that energy. I wanted to have a red color scheme, but I don't know how to make it look more like tinted water and distinguish it from lava.

Guys, I could really use some help. I can't even get started until I figure out how to get over this road-bump.

Posted By: AirStyle
Date Posted: 06 April 2012 at 3:14pm
There are times where you'll have jaggies that you can't avoid. Most of the time it comes with really huge objects or things that involve huge curves. What you do at that point is apply AA, or anti-aliasing. (Not sure if you already knew what that meant :))
Apply it to the spots where it looks a little off, and it should work. Unless, someone else has some better advice?

Here's an update, now with god-rays.

Posted By: Elastico-Gadget
Date Posted: 06 April 2012 at 3:35pm
@ThePixelKnight : Great ! :D The only thing that bothers me here is the low part of the ray which comes over Darth's shoulder. The shoulder's great, but where the ray is on the cape, it is strange how it comes to the foreground, it is a bit hard to know if we see the reflection of light on the leather, or if it is the ray itself.

Yes. For that reason dithering is an allied.

I've added more contrast and a dragon (they are fashionable I see it...).

But now I don't like it very much... (23 colours)

so, this morning I submitted some pixel art for this challenge <http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/69544.htm> and I thought I pressed the submit for weekly challenge button, but evidently did not (or the less likely of some form of computer error) should I re-upload it or is there something else I'm supposed to do?
