CHALLENGE: Villain Spotlight

Create a sprite depicting your favourite villain from any game, comic or TV show.
 
Canvas Size - Max 100 x 100.
Colours - Max 25.
Transparency - Required.
Animation - No.

CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to /pixels/submit_icons.asp'>submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the /forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8'>WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

  • Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.
  • Top finisher gets to call the following week's challenge...sweet.
  • 'Participation' ribbons will be given for all who enter.

I would do magus from Chrono Trigger, but he's already a sprite so I don't know how well that would work. Instead, I went to the next best baddy, Lynx from Chrono Cross.

Sometimes its better to have shorter, easier challenges that don't require hours and hours of work. It's more inviting to the people who don't have much time on their hands.

... You seem very attached to the Monthly Top 10, more than anyone I've seen in this community. These challenges are meant for fun, quit being so concerned and anal about the end product, it's the process that counts. Also, please explain why this challenge wont "generate" a masterpiece?

For this challenge, I'm going to interpret the villain as Lordgenome plus his mecha, because the mecha is way more fun to draw.

I'm afraid I tried to fit too many details in, though. Is this readable enough? Any other tips would be great too.

E: @philippejugnet: I prefer the small challenges over large masterpiece-generators myself. I don't have time to enter the big ones, so whenever a small fun open-ended challenge like this comes I usually enjoy it more than the huge scenes that only get four or five entrants.

What I mean is, the size is too much restricted. I personally like to work on bigger pieces. Well, I am not concerned with the mothly top, I just think the challenges aren't affecting it, past months 80% of the entries were result from challenges! Now, with those not as great challenges, I can say 20% or less are a result from the challenges. What do I mean with it is: we should have more challenges less abstract ( like the glass one ) such as the crepuscular rays one, 4 of the entries on that challenge got near the top ( 11, 12 ) and 2 of them got top 10. We have lots of talented artists, just like you, and drazelic too, but we need better ideas, concept is the most important part in the art in my oppinion. I completely agree with Drazelic and Adcrusher, but the size could be bigger, so each one with your style can join it. Drazelic you said that you can enter those small ones. Well, on the other challenges no one said you coudnt do a small entry =D. Well, I wish I could work on something http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/35431.htm - like this

but the size is very restricted as I mentioned before.

But this is a sprite challenge. Precise detail is a pretty huge part of pixel art (100 x  100 is fairly large for a game sprite in fact). The May monthly top is looking pretty good to me, and the only two weekly challenge entries in it are towards the bottom.

@LuckyF: Yes

@Adcrusher: The bottom edge of the scythe thing is a bit flat - conforming to the bottom of the canvas too closely?

The challenge wants a character on a 100x100 transparent canvas with no animation or movement. Maybe that will help.

unsure if you've considered it -- but the vest? it seems too dark to me, I know it matches his hair, but I almost think it would benefit to be a little brighter, or maybe separated by a different color

First thing to do would be to define what is a masterpiece ;)

I think this challenge is great, I might give it a try but picking a great villain is pretty hard :)

@hlx: I think the main problem is that all the facial features are sitting too tight. Try giving them some more space.

I had (believe it or not :P) never heard of this villain before finding him on the great invention called Google :) His name is Fin Fang Foom and he is, in short, the Chinese version of Godzilla. Here's a quick lineart of him and my reference.



His legs look funny to me. Are they too short? Bent at an unnatural angle? Comments please

Very impressed with the detail, I hope you don't mind if I steal a copy so I can study the detail.
 
As for my own WIP, I added some texture and shading, but it's not quite turning out how I'm picturing it... Gonna check out some tutorials in the meantime to see if I can figure it out.

@randomboy the cool colours definitely suite the computer in some kind of cold lifeless robot sense and looks more robot-esque at least to me, that and it contrasts the warm tones in the cables and creates more interest in some ways

His left leg looks to be in the wrong position, I think it needs brought back and tilted out, like in the reference. He kind of looks like he is sitting on something currently.

Ok so an update on my FinFangFoom sprite. I've adjusted the legs, added the wings and added colour (obviously :D). Any comments before I start cleaning it up?

BTW, it has 17 colors using Jinn's FMA color palette (with his permission of course)

I've had 2 entries pending for hours but moments after my latest submission the latest one alone was approved, made me wonder what's up with that :/ I'll be fine as long as they get accepted before deadline O:
