Cliché items! :)

I'll be doing a bunch of small items for a game, so this makes for a good practice!

That's a really nice start, but you are relying on the same colors/brightness-register for all images so far. Maybe mix it up a bit?

I cannot *not* accept this advice, seeing as it comes from the man whose palette I'm using :D

Well, seeing everyone elses work, I lost already.
But I'll share my crap here anyways:
As you can tell, I am not a very good pixel artist, but I tried at least :)

Hey everyone! This is my first post; I'm not very active on Pixel Joint but I really want to become more active eventually. Anyway, this is my entry so far, coming in at 8 colors (so far)

I was actually going to ask how I could decrease my colors, but I think I'm doin' fine so far, haha :)

I know theres alot of pros here, so any of you got some improvements for me? I really need to learn how to properly convey depth with pixels. Tired of these shabby 2-d sprites :p

Posted By: ultimaodin
Date Posted: 02 July 2012 at 10:29pm
So I actually have time this week so I'm thinking of doing a whole number of these then probably combine my fave pieces into one entry. Anyway starting with the Potion Set:

Small and large Health and Magic Potions done thus far. Need 2 types of Elixer (red) and 2 kinds of Revival (Gold) but these will have different jars/viles.

Other sets will be weapons, accessories, key items etc...
As yah's can probably tell I'm fairly rusty. =/

@Levaunt - Those are looking really neat, however note you do need a background colour.

Critique and comments welcome.

I just got a new camera so I was thinking of a detective type game.  I think I could do hand cuffs, knife and grenade but that leaves me with 3 more.  What blunt object does a detective use?

Magnifying glass, badge, phone, radio.

I'm going for some kind of dark detective adventure

Posted By: ultimaodin
Date Posted: 03 July 2012 at 4:24am
Small update. Still working out if I should go a second kind of revival or just make a remedy item so I don't need to bother with anti-venom and other stat removing items.

I'll probably just make a second healing set for ailments. I still have a whole colour available for the rest of the sets.

Inventory of gruesome bits (complete with obligatory dangling nerves &blood vessels, of course!). A fang, an eyeball, and a tongue, so far. Using Dawnbringer's 16-color palette. ^_^

Hi guys.
I'm new at pixel art and I decided to try to complete this challenge. Tell me what you think and maybe give some advice on how I must draw things.

Update:

I think I'm getting the hang of this palette. :D

@Pookaball: Maybe give the items more interesting positions, so that they aren't all perfectly horizontal or vertical & directly facing the viewer? Maybe throw a few 45º angles in there, for instance, just to make the presentation a bit more interesting. :)

Date Posted: 03 July 2012 at 11:38am
Been looking for an excuse to use the 16c palette again...might actually enter a challenge this year!? :D

@Kravvon: That's the "Iso-ology" palette; perfectly fine to use...just not the same as "DB's 16". Still, nice work so far :)

Posted By: Kravvon Nar'roth
Date Posted: 03 July 2012 at 12:01pm
Oh wow, my bad... I appear to have mislabeled the palette image file on my harddrive. Thanks for the correction!

Maybe I'll try another with the *real* "DB's 16", then, if I finish this one in time. :)

Update:

Posted By: Adarias
Date Posted: 03 July 2012 at 7:27pm

- An unusual letter from "Martha" to "Henry" containing some rather suggestive language. In the pinhold, a pressed and dried yellow flower with almost no smell.

- A flask of weaksmelling liquor. The front is embossed with a poppy and, within it, the word "Virag." It is a little less than half empty.

- A potato. It is blackened and withered with age. It appears that it tried to spout once, but failed.

- A bar of lemon soap, still in its wrapper. It stinks quite strongly.

- A pair of broken spectacles. They'll need to be mended, again.

- A page, bearing a few illegible scribbles. It is slightly damp with saltwater. With it a pencil, blunted, snotty and halfway chewed through.

- A tattered and wornout handkerchief. The redness of it has been dulled with snot.

- Three coins: a sixpence and two pennies. They make a dull clinking as you walk.

-----

Didn't know we were able to draw the full backgrounds - was thinking this thing was most of the way done :(. Luckily, I have two colors left to play with!

The literary-inclined will know what these items are from. Purists will notice that one is invented and two are from different works (where the remaining five are from the same), but I thought it was more interesting than having too many different notes, letters, and newspapers.

This is my current wip, let's see if you guys can see the connection between the 4 items at the bottom.

Daanvdk, we've been through this such a long long time...

I'm curious though, what kind of pouch/pocket/pack can hold a raincloud? :P

Posted By: Losm
Date Posted: 03 July 2012 at 10:16pm
Scrolls are better than badly made, lumpy bags, right? :D
Also, I think the bread loaf is too dithered. Welp, with, like, 3 colours left, that should be fixable!

... I'm actually thoroughly enjoying this, even though I'll most likely lose (considering my competition). :) It's been so long since I last pixeled something. It feels nice.

Here's my progress so far. Setting is some hotel murder mystery or something.

Red Liquid~ Red liquid sloshing around an unlabeled bottle. Blood? Wine? You don't want to taste it to find out.
Parking Ticket~ A slip of paper you got when you paid for your parking. It says: 'Saturday, 8th August, 2004. Thank you for using U-Park-It!'

Okay so I have the potion set finished and am working on the ailment fix item set (for lack of a term to proclaim it):

Antidote for poison, Aloe Vera for burn, Chilli for frozen and Coffee Beans for sleep.
I still need one for paralyses (which I have no idea what to do), one for darkness/blind (I'm thinking something along the lines of torch or match. Probably the match since it's a once use kind of thing.), one for silence  (Again still thinking of ideas) and an all ailment remedy.

Also, I  had to add an additional brown as my last olour since I couldn't tweak anything to work as a darker colour for the coffee beans.

@DawnBringer - One small thing, the update makes the TNT difficult to read. Although this coming from a nOOb but that's just my perspective. ^_^

I think I've updated my inventory. Still bad, but I tried drawing everything in a different way.
The small thing at bottom left is a badly drawn book.
Well, I guess everything is too tiny.

nope :) I was thinking of adding a knife, cause it's cliché, and cause it's useful for cutting stuff... but I'm not sure anymore :)

Anyways, added contrasty backdrop for more contrast.

*edit* added a bottle of suspicious cliché liquid!

My start. I'm going Larry Laffer and in the land of the Zombies... First thing you need in your inventory is protection right?

Would have thought more Day of the Tentacle / Sam and Max and Larry Laffer / Space Quest ludicrous equipment inventory lists would have made it... or am I in the wrong genre?

so, i'm trying something for an investigation-game... the top four items are for photography (camera, lens, flash and film), the lower four will be common items like a notebook or a city map. I'm a fan of lomography, so i decided to do this diana camera design, though you wouldn't use such a camera for professional observation...

Alright... this seemed funnier before I pixelled - now it is just a bit weird. Brains (to give to zombies) and a gimp suit... I know its not good fashion sense but full body leather protection stops zombie bites - who cares how you look after the zombie apocalypse? Need to rethink this...

+ a stomach. So only one more to go:

Going to attempt a brain to complete the set, but I dunno if I can pull off a satisfactory squiggly look at this scale...

@Frogger5: Hehe, means I must be doing something right. Nice shading on the diamond there, BTW.

@gogglecrab: Thanks mate. :) Re: your piece, I think it might benefit from a bit higher contrast, specifically a darker background to make the items stand out a bit more. Also, watch out for banding on the outlines. ;)

@Dawnbringer & Mrmo Tarius: Yum!

Update on the ailment cure set:

Added a magic candle for blind, Salt Water Candy for Mute (since salt water even in candy form is good for your vocals) and an all ailment pill. Not overly happy with the remedy capsule. I still have no idea what to do for the paralysis/shock cure item. Might just move onto the third set.

Well. I do like this challenge. An awful lot. Very rare does one come up that I'm comfortable with and have time to complete or even work on. The plan is 2 per day, starting yesterday, and a preview over Sunday.

I'm using the default PaintDotNet palette because my 16col palette isn't going great and this one is surprisingly versatile usable. My subject? Character customization... Or something.

Hey duders, great site you have here!
It's inspiring to see all the talent around here. I just started with Pixel Art, so I'm gonna play it safe for now and go with a Minecraft-inspired inventory. But my personal challenge is to only use the original 4-color Gameboy palette.

Edit: also, any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!

Also, first post

I'm done.

Mmmh, I guess It can't participate for not being completely about a "new/original" game. Oh well, it was still fun. Specially writing that "TNT" label.

@Ashkin: Awesome dude! Loved the smartphone detail, those text messages. I was a bit confused with the last item, is it a pack of smokes? It could have one of them outside or coming out to be clearer maybe?

Have you tried just doing a notching of the feather to imply it's nature or only highlighting the central vein?

Had a try at making a "gangsta" adventure game using DB's pallete for the first time. I cant seem to shade the tooth very well without making it look terrible. Also I cant seem to make the coins very interesting. Any tips?

I think most of your issues are in presentation and implying detail that adds subtle but crucial readability detail.  Some ideas off the top of my head to improve pres. and readability.
(note you can always opt for a more neutral background color, and have all of your objects vividly colored or high in contrast from the background for an easier way to improve on both)

-change the perspective of the can so you can sort of see the top of it.  That way you can add a texture and metal to the top to make it readable as a can without the text.  Then you can erase the "can o'" part and simply have whup ass on the can.  Also make the text color more readable from the can.  The background green isn't helping the yellow either.

Gun is a bit dull looking.  Maybe have the top barrel slightly metallic.

Glasses should be moved to the right a bit and have the part that goes on your ears longer and show the downward curve better at the end of them.

Maybe for the coins have a gold stack in the middle (maybe change the perspective to a slightly more downward angle and again try a subtle glint) and have silver coins scattered around the stack of gold.

The colors for the gold tooth seem off and don't imply gold.  Try dark yellow ambers and bright yellows for highlights.  Use google images for choosing colors.

Hello!  Here's my WIP:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/515/8inventorysubmit.png/ - http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/515/8inventorysubmit.png/

Oh, I'm sorry:  You say it was finished?  Well, I'd like to spice up the background, not to mention any improvements on the items themselves.  Especially the key and potion...

EDIT:  It seems that the inventory isn't loading.  *sigh*  Hold on a minute...
Best I can do is a link, for now.  It seems that the image function won't cooperate.

@Lazer24, your format is wrong. You are required to use the exact dimensions given in the challenge (your boxes are too rectangular).

I like the improvements, though. All the items look better.

@Lazer24exe You used the example from monkey island, not the template. (the boring one)

Update, i redid the feather, but I find my that my colors are not really good, and i'd like some advice to improve my palette.

Wip of the contents of the Tenth Doctor's Time-lord pockets. They're bigger on the inside. I'm also experimenting with DB's Pallete. The restricted size and colors are really tough.

Update:
I don't know if I'll finish before I'm away from my tools for the weekend...

I need one more icon. I think these fit well together except for the bonsai tree. Will also be tweaking the background color (might use different ones for each icon. Hope to get done in time *fingers crossed*

Thoughts??

Fuu, it looks quite flat isn't it ?

A lot lot of your stuff seems unshaded you may want to add some shading. Also if you can make it so some colors can dither to make new ones you may be able to squeeze in some anti aliasing.

Neither work that well because they are just way too noisy.  The darker one is a little bitter because the neutral grey lets the objects pop a little more, since the only objects that are neutral colored are the gun and glasses.  Try darkening the grey background noise to be a lot less noticeable.  Also try brightening the grey background just a tad to help the gun and glasses visibility.  For the gold tooth, you might want to try something more like this:

Try adding creases in the bandana.  Try getting rid of the dithering on the can to make whup ass more readable.  It's still pretty hard to read.

Thank you Losm c:

Gamamoto: try making some shadings as suggested.
Also, avoid colors that cannot be used on several items, for instance the 2 pinkish tones skyrocket your colour count but you only use it for one item.

Sword, magic scepter, heartshaped fruit, ocarina, whatever potion, polished red gem, feather.
Wasn't home for long, i just added one item, still one to do! x.x

@Voltali: Nice work. You have accidently used a 17th color; pure black on the Scepter. May I suggest you use the medium-grey or blue color to interpolate the greens on the potion (rather than bright-grey). Also; the liquid isn't level.
