How "remote" does it have to be?
Also, how many houses/facilities have to be in this "village?"

I'm not op, but it seems pretty self explanatory - a village implies multiples families are living there, so there will probably be at least 3+ buildings (though I'd say start at 5). "Village" also means there's a limit, though, so keep it small, no more than 20 maybe if it's REALLY remote.

For your other question, however "remote" it needs to be to make the word meaningful. This is going to mean distant shots since you can't discern a location's remoteness up close (remote, in this case, also meaning isolated. As with anything else, when in doubt, Google. I just did the Google images search of "remote village," and the bulk of them are shots of clusters of houses in the middle of nowhere.

I'm tempted to make a town sitting on a remote control just because of the somewhat-vagueness of the challenge description.

That is EXACTLY what I was thinking :)
Or maybe a village made of remotes.
Edit: Couldn't help myself.
WIP, obviously. Chances are that I won't finish though, and if I do it will be terrible.
Edit 2:

Don't be too surprised if that is disqualified from the challenge. Funny idea anyway. Maybe the next challenge could be a play-on-words sort of thing.

I've already posted it in the main page. Can it be a fantasy (remote)village?

this is my sketch. it's a remote village from the future

@moondrome: Which one is it? If it's the one on the bottom, then it doesn't really depict a remote area, and if it's the one on top, it's not a village.

Remote RPG village still lost in the 1980's.  Made using the NES' color palette.

@javk: nothing about that really reads as 'remote village' to me. Looks like a Mario map and an abandoned mineshaft.

@moon: I can read your as a village (or at least a city) but the remote aspect isn't very clear. You could expand your canvas to create empty space around the town, or otherwise indicate this isn't part of a moon metropolis.

@mrmo: looks great so far but the angle of the buildings is pretty funky, I think it'd be better if we didn't see the tops personally, doesn't match the ground/bg angle.

@peyton: huehuehue

update

Date Posted: 05 December 2012 at 12:32pm

I started by considering just what makes the village remote. I had various ideas, but went with the old "it's super high up" thing. Buildings are just starting to be placed, so it's not quite a village yet. The background will be transparent.

I haven't done pixel art in forever. I just started a little while ago and I probably need to finish this today because I'm taking my computer to the apple store to hopefully get the display or whatever is scrambling my screen fixed and I don't know how long it'll take.

I can see the concern with this piece which I added before seeing this...does anyone have a reason why this should be removed from the challenge?*

*...but left in the gallery cuz its real nice.

I started to think the village part of the challenge wasn't being meet because of only having 3 houses in his finished piece. According to wiki, a village's population ranges from "a few hundred to a few thousand (sometimes tens of thousands)." I don't think Peytonisgreat can be penalized because a majority of the submitted pieces have a small structure count. I suppose size/structure count shouldn't matter because the worlds population could live/fit in texes.

Kaze> Strange perspective but I love your idea, it will be fun and original. ;)

My WIP tonight :

I don't know what I can make with the house on the foreground but ... i will do my best. :c

Ugh. So many pretty looking submissions. :O

Update:

Not sure what to do with the grass and rocks.

@Salomon: Thanks :) I love your colors and line style, good luck for your foreground !

@Losm: You could to put some shading to give them a better texture :)

A little update, I tried to do some roc's texture but it's not finished yet...

I actually tried that a while back and got this:

I dunno. I like the simpler version better, even though I want something done with it.
That grass, though. Ugh.

... ALSO, nice progress! Hope you get to finish it in time.

@Losm: I suggest darkening that blue. And I personally think it looks better if if the clouds/smoke are 1 pure color and not dithered. Keep at it its looking pretty spiffy.

I agree with crozier, indeed a darker blue combined with the lantern light could give a nice effect. :)

A little update, I'm not really satisfied with the houses and with the guy's hair, I'll probably return to work on this after :/

I hope I will can finish it tomorrow.

A landscape update, I think that there is more depth like that :

@Salomon: I don't know what you could to add, your village seems already remote for me...
