That's interesting actually.... After your reply I tried looking for a good definition of pixel art came across http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11907 - this old thread from PixelJoint. So that kind of begs the question, what kind of art would you guys call this?

Well, it's 2d digital art on the more pixelated side?

I consider it (broadly) as pixel art, it just wouldn't be 'pixel pure' enough for pixeljoint's gallery. PJ gallery rules don't determine the definition of pixel art though.

The featureless hands could use some work, anatomy and proportions in general could be improved, especially weapon-bearing arms and connection of all parts to the torso.

I call this a Hybrid.
Regardless of the percentage of pixleart to CG to be pixelart a piece should conform to the limitations available when pixelart was all computers/games could handle to be true. Back then gradients, textures, blends, etc. did not exist.

There are certain limitations in place with our graphics engine that force us to draw the characters in a particular way. For one, the equipment the player is wearing is actually drawn over his actual avatar. Also the head, torso, hand, helmet, armor and weapon move independently of one another when the player is idle to create the impression of breathing (this is done procedurally, not with any kind of animation). There is only a single frame of animation actually used when a player attacks or casts a spell.
