I have this piece for the challenge.
What do you think I need to fix? (The last two are the optional final pieces)

I was tying to make six-pointed shuriken to add a sense of perspective to the piece, with an intention to make you duck your screen looking at them. I know I need to fix the head on the ninja, and I was going to add more to him later, but as a whole, how does it look? Does it read well? Anything else you see wrong with it?

Given these colors and your layout...
...maybe a mock 3D effect, like http://abduzeedo.com/stereoscopic-3d-effect-anaglyph-images - THIS kind of thing, would make this a more effective piece than using secondary lighting to use the palette. It will help you give that 'coming at you' feel.

Scroll down to the ninja warrior on that link

I'm not sure I understand you; you want me to do a red/cyan 3D type of thing?

Also, I couldn't find the ninja warrior you were talking about.

I don't want you to do anything. I was just suggesting an idea that might have inspired you since you mentioned wanting the stars to come at the viewer and this palette would work for that look as a mock 3D...and yes, I meant 3D red/cyan look.
Its not a ninja on that page its a swordsman (3rd image down).

OK, but as for readability: can you see everything okay?

I'd say it's the main problem, actually. The lighting idea you have is quite interesting, and I'd say I like it -- at least, when the shuriken and Ninja are separated as in the gif. Together, they don't contrast at all, and without the progression gif it's hard to tell there is a Ninja at all. Perhaps try brightening the shuriken that close a bit more, and darken the ninja in the back some? In addition, while it may ruin a bit of the idea you have in mind, perhaps try placing the shuriken in a location other than near the center of the Ninja?

Okay, I'm about to change the foreground a bit. But before I do, I have a couple of questions: 1) Does the hand on the extended arm look right, and 2)(Random) how do you guys, as artists, stay motivated to keep working on a piece?

Last post till I get some sleep:

I ditched the shuriken, and put the sword, eyes and head band.
How about now?
