I've had it in my head to make some tilesets for some of my favorite games, just because I thought it would be fun. I think its been stuck in my head too long, so starting to take my first steps into pixel art, and would love any direction and critiques anyone has.

Stuff from my first of the day to my first serious attempt.

Ok as for the ninja dude on the bottom, well, hes looking like a goat from the waist down. The feet could use some work, because they neither look human or are at the right angle (the way his left ankle/foot is positioned it almost looks like hes on tippy toes.) The left hand is looking mildly disfigured also D:
His suit is quite nice looking. Its shaded pretty well. The colors are nice. But 3 things: he has an odd looking tiedie pattern going on near his right armpit, the grey you are using on his suit is a little light, and also the black line cutting the left and right side of his suit could use some AA (its looking out of place as of now).
His bandanna is not an attractive color. I like the bandanna in the 3rd pic though. And lastly his left (our right) calf is too strait. A little curve, specifically on the leftmost line of his left calf could be added to help fix that.
And you don't have to scale the first two pictures to 2x or anything along those lines. We can do that (although a few browsers blur it, slightly)
Anyway, I'm glad you are trying to be serious. Good luck in the future.

Thanks, I had a lot of your crits in my head as I posted but I figured I would show where I was to get some feedback before I went further. Here is some changes as well as a chibi I wanted to try as well.

Couldn't get the flowing cloth to work on the mini.

Having a lot fun, feel like I'm learning a lot with em.
But this one is giving me a ton of trouble. The hair, the arm closest to us still looks wrong to me. The cigarette doesn't quite work either I think.

Tried a different approach, doing a drawing the way I normally would and working from that. Saw it in a tutorial somewhere, soo much easier for me.

Are there any automated ways to check how many colors are in an image in photoshop? I see people doing palette counters with other programs.

A bunch of random tiles I tried to make, and not have the repeat be obvious.
An edit of a sword from another thread I wanted to see what I could do, and
my first attempt at an animation!

You can click Image > Mode > Index. The popup window will tell you how many colors you have. I think their is another way to do it but I'm not really sure.

Thanks! I figured it out I think. It's not something I can really worry about
right now, but it will be good to know for the future. Some more toying around.

Diggin your work man, giving me a bit of stuff to go off also, for some reason I never thought of an edge piece for grass to dirt.

I've basically been just learning by diving into the deep end of the pool. Anytime I see something I like I just attempt to do it. Usually doesn't turn out...but its soooo much fun. I giggle like a school girl from time to time.

Underwood: thanks man, you are making a lot of progress too. We both gotta keep going!

More tile practice, I'm trying to make the dirt have some interesting shapes but not repeat so obviously, I toyed with it for quite a while.

I wanted to do a brick-like tile, but the normal brick tile was boring....and this was too hard for me to figure out. So...back to a regular brick tile lol
