Hi everyone ^^ im new to this forum, this is my first topic.
I would like to start a personal project... i was thinking about ideas, what could i make?, i thought about several things, i like to create digital art (my gallery is at mrrookie.deviantart.com/gallery ^^), the proyect shouldnt be too hard, but shouldnt be really really easy.
I ended up with a tool that would try to simplify the pixel art creation process.
The problem is that im not a pixel artist by myself, altough i've made a little pixel art some time ago the main reason i came here was to ask if some sort of specialized tool would be useful, and if you think it would be, what would you like it to have?.
Layers, layer sets, instances of objects, templates for primitive objects... those are the things i've been thinking, but since you guys are way way way more experienced than me here, i came here to ask for help.
Thanks in advance for reading this.

For pixel art the most awesome tool would be a coffee maker.

Hey buddy what language are you using. I think the kind folk here couls assist you in creating a good app. Some snap modes might be nice like snap to a grid size, hold shift to make perfect circles and boxes, and strait linesmaybe an iso snap mode. Also make sme new fill modes, DEFENATLY a small tile viewing thing for making grass tiles and such.
If you ad tools like blur you will be sent to the Pixel Joint Dungeons....that's where all the mods put the bad member accounts.
I believe you get a preemptive warning or two first though. And you must do a written apology and 5 good art pieces measuring 640x480 to get out.
Ok good luck and if i think of more features i'll post again.

may be you could do some dither pattern fills. Like color every odd or even pixel and also different dither opatterns
AND PALETTE SAVING!!!!!!! Oh and a tool to create a palette from all the used colors. And a color count variable too!

check this open source http://www.opensword.org/Pixen/ - site
for inspiration and all around pixel sofware development ideas. It
includes tiles, sprites, iso and general pixel art. It is mac based but
thw Windoze universe sure could use its own version.

I use it for small pieces all the time. Canvas only goes to 250x250px.

Yes adding instances would be ok but then you need a merge down command or the user will flood their memory.

Mmmh, ok, in the past i had some ideas and they werent that wrong ^^ but you guys pointed me in the best direction... heres what im planning to add (With time heehhe ^^):
2 grid modes: squared and isometric, add the 'snap to grid' option, maybe support for layers and instances (altough this would require more time).
At the beginning, it should have customizable saveable color palettes, the snap to grid thingie and some useful tools, like a paint bucket with a configurable tolerance level, a line tool that, depending on teh user, could follow one of the 12 'perfect isometric lines', depending on the angle of the first and second point the tool would suggest one of the lines (ya kno.... 0°, 25.565°, 45°, ... and so on)
Right now im not skilled at java imaging but im learning, some sort of beta could be ready in within 1 month.
Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions, i will work hard to try to make yer dreams cometrue ^^
Keep up the good pixel art!

How about a way to make transparency that isn't complicated so people
don't ask like 5,000 times on forums how to make something transparent?
Like maybe the option of adding a "transparent layer" and whatever's on
that layer is transparent automatically when you save it?
And no saving as jpg option. Since everyone seems to dispise that. :P
Oooh, and maybe automatic color count bar on the side or something? :P

mmmmmh... about transparency.... is that OK in pixel art? :p because i guess some purists would not like that because it might make things a bit easier ^^ well... instead of transparent layer, it could be easier defining transparency within the color itself, using 32 bit colors would be a good choice, (RGBA).
Anyway.... what would be better... transparent colors, oooooor transparent layers? the only problem is that layers are something that i hope will be added in a near future, but at the beginning, i was thinking about only 1 layer :p, later i have planned at least 2 or 3 kinds of layer:
free painting layer (for the non isometric pixel guy or for the isometric guys who like to add a little variety to their thingies)
tiled layers (here you put your tiles :p)
And i was also thinking of parametric layers, this ones should help to build basic shapes, like cubes, simple prisms, rooms, stairs, stuff like that, but the shapes should be parametric.
Well... thats some of the new stuff that will be added with time, please be patient ^^

Oh Oh Oh I got one!!!! The circles in ms paint arn't symmetrical!! Make sure that your sircles and ellipses are! This could be a very helpful program if you do it right! Ms Paint has some glaring flaws....graphics gale is a bit over powered and the layers confuse many people as previously stated.

Must have items.
100% Preview with TILING option (very important)
brush tool with different sizes
Eraser with different sizes
Layers
The ability to choose if you background is going to be transparent. That way if your creating something that will be transparent, you just specify transparent background when you create a new file. Maybe show a pattern in the back to show the transparent parts like in photoshop. Thats one of my pet peaves with graphics gale. I always just take everything out and into photoshop to make transparent.
Customizable pallettes
eye dropper tool
cutom grids
frames so you can make animate
a replace color tool so you can use the eye dropper, pick a color and change all of that color.
move tool
circle and square selection tools
fill tool
Make all that and i'd buy it.

Here is another idea. A verticle line and also horizontal line too.
It works like seeded fill but you just make one horizontal or verticle line until it "hits" another color.
