Wut do you mean in "new and original avatar"? No copies?

If anyone knows of a good one, could someone post a helpful page about anatomy and the basics of pixelling a head?

Maybe it means that someone can't just search for an image in which the celebrity appears and make a 'pixel version' of it.

Celebrity could mean costumed character here as well, right?! Such as C3PO (Anthony Daniels in costume) from Star Wars?

If not... boring!

Of course. C3PO is a bigger celebrity than many :)
Anything goes as long as you can call him/her/it a celebrity.

New and original goes for most challenges.
New: nothing that you've done or started prior to this week.
Original: you can't steal someone else's piece or copy an image from the web one on one.
Simple rules really.

Currently 9 colours plus transparency, will probably ditch the blue and replace it with the yellow so that I don't need to make a BG. (I don't think I have time for that as well) Again using colours from my custom 16 colour pallet.

If you don't know who this is, then either I'm a bad pixel interpreter - or you're not very well versed.

I might just call this done as is:

I am disappointed in Pixel Joint today. This man is a true hero. He's got a folk song and everything.

My WIP of Pixelebrity:

Gumpei Yokoi (R.I.P) creator of Game & Watch, Game Boy, Nintendo Zapper, R.O.B, Super Scope, Virtual Boy and Bandai Wonder Swan and game designer of Kid Icarus, Metroid, Wario Land saga, in addition to being a producer of several sets of R & D 1 (Intelligent System) and mentor Shigeru Miyamoto.

For me it is a genius in the game industry.

So this is what I got so far, however I still don't feel 100% about it. Specially in the chin and mouth+lip areas.

Any help / suggestion will be welcome =)

@SJL - I recommend a reference ;)
A bit hard to say too much on it as is.

@LuckyF - Please, please finish that!!!

@Pixelart_kid - a good start, some of the edges definitely need rounding off though. Especially the cheek.

@JuninTKD - A good start but a few things. your two greys have very little contrast, the lighter grey isn't even noticeable at 1px. Your browns are also straight ramps. Try moving your hue - move your highlights closer to yellow and your shadows closer to a purple. This will make it feel more real while also adding contrast. Also, watch out for banding.

Resemblance is much better now. The mouth could use a bit of adjusting to make it look more like him.

Hey, here is my WIP of Lou Costello. I have done little to no dithering and had a bit of trouble with the right side around the hat area, where can I improve, what should I change, am I on the right track?

Here it is

Maybe you should focus on making your own lighting/shading based on the face features and the clothes instead of just trying to copy the image, I can see you tried to match the hat texture (velvet, I presume) to your piece, but in that scale I say it doesn't read that way, the face is looking nice tho.

http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=27416&FID=1 - ultimaodin , thank you for you advise, but on the subject of round the bend, my problem is that as I only use 4 colors, could not generate a rounder edge. I tried it but it looks weird when smoothing the edges.

Edit:

Cheers!!!

I may have gone a touch overboard with this edit. (since I only wanted to show you how to do curves with the pallet)
Anyway, as also seen in my edit, I feel you need to use a bit more of your darker two colours to accentuate some of the more prominent features.

I got a late start on this, I haven't been on this site in forever!

Anyway, here's my WIP. It's looking a little grainy and I'm not sure how I can get a nice reflection on the glasses without a complete banding thing going on. Any suggestions?

and my ref (scaled down so the quality's not great):

Can you tell who it is?

Just whipped this up and I'm looking advice or criticism.

Something looks off to me, is it the palette?

Guess some last minute feedback is in order.

@ http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=42024&FID=1 - shaface - Somehow missed yours sorry. One thing I like to go when it comes to greyscale pieces is to look at the reference and try and work out the darkest sections. SO for example his hair, his pupils, the cornerzsof his mouth, the left (our right) nostril, the band across his shoulder and a small chunk of the bowler hat's band all feel like they involve the darkest part. I'd start by pixelling nose aspects in the black then move onto to the next level brightness. Another point I'd just like to quickly make, hair that is short or pushed back from the scalp often shouldn't have a darker outline between it and the head as the hair tends to blend in (get less dense) towards the forehead before ending completely.

@ http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=26833&FID=1 - Kanea2 - You seem to have two versions here, but my first main crit is lighting. How it's lit feels rather creepy. What I wrote to shaface may be helpful to you as well. The skin lacks contrast are the eyes and mouth stand out blaring in comparison to it.

http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=31198&FID=1 - @greenmango99 - First off, I like your name. Secondly - this overall isn't that bad of pixelling. What I feel is letting this down is your colours. Colours don't just ramp perfectly through the same hue. In pixelart hue shifting is important. Try moving your shadows closer towards a blue/purple and your highlights closer to a yellow/orange. Also, underneath the chin you have a bit of banding. Lots of tutorials here mention the negatives of banding and how to effectively make Anti-Aliasing (AA) instead. I highly recommend Cure's pixelart guide for a read.

@ http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=7301&FID=1 - amerup - I'm not sure what the thing up the top right corner is. It looks like you're going with a more caricature version of Obama, I'd personally make his ears a little bit bigger. One point 'd like to make is that it feels like you've missed a few pieces of AA - the forehead especially around the hair line. In that small patch of light there no AA and looks quite jaggy to the rest. The yellow could also be used to AA around the lips to the teeth. Overall it's quite nice in its simplicity and the colours are neat as well.

@ultimaodin

The thing in the top-right corner is the obama logo using my colors :P

Thanks for the advice, I fixed up the AA a little bit, and thanks for the complement about the colors! I'm trying to dig a little deeper into color theory after seeing a post that really underlined its importance :)
