Flipped it vertically.

Applying proper lights and shades is a bane for me.

With overlay:

[UPDATE]:
I don't really know what to do now. There are some refinements to be done (fix palette, apply AA, eliminate bad curves), but what else?
Maybe add some light beams?

I see a guy sitting on the floor with his hands up, he is holding afish on one of his hands and this fish is spitting a liquid.

There is also a male centaur that is reading some scroll or something like that

Is pillow shading intended here?

IMO it is Much simplier to apply lighting first - and only then add texture.

Light beams would look cool but maybe mislead the attention away from the fish. The background looks amazing with the fish (i just see a weird line on top of the second backfin that has some really weird AA)
Great!

Man, Maxaun, I dig that! Real nice job, there.
But I think if you were to up the saturation on the fish (thing) a little, it would look a bit nicer. The image feels a bit cluttered too. Perhaps too much seaweed?
I tried my hand at an edit.

There are a few more things that could use some work, like the aa could be a little stronger on the top-right part of the fish, and work on those strange circles all over the back side of the fish. The circles on the yellow-grey part of the back end are giving a "banding" vibe.

Thanks!
Saturation is like a drug - you can make picture more and more saturated and every time you think "a little bit more saturation will not harm". And finally you end up with highest saturation possible. I just don't like saturation for this. The fish is underwater after all - high saturation looks unnatural.

Perhaps you are right about the clutter, but for me background looked empty without those scarce seaweed. Maybe I had to use some less distractive colors for distant seaweed.

Strange circles are those little dust-like thingies - floating algae and plankton. It's a shame for me I couldn't make it obvious.
But anyway I already posted it - so I will keep my eye on things you mentioned in my future works - not on this one unfortunately. Thanks.

It looks great, but air bubbles are never perfect spheres when they are going up so you might wanna change them a bit. Other than that I really have no other suggestions, great work!

Edit: And woops, it looks like I'm talking to the wrong person. Whatever, you kind people get the point. ORIGINAL ARTIST. BUBBLES.

I made a sketch of the image I will finish for the competition.
Some kind of samurai guy.

Also, thanks for the welcome crozier. :D

Update!

More Update

I still have to add a light source and maybe a background.

Considering just saying no to the background.

Finished

I ended up just editing Thanwa's original painting a tiny bit to improve contrast and then just using it is the background. I think it kind of fits the samurai-esc theme anyways, so it all works out.

(Because I don't wanna draw a background.)

The image this painting represents is too disturbing to post.

Perverted elephants... tut tut.
