Just a question, would the pixls from Super Paper Mario be counted as sprites? Could I use them as inspiration or are they not really the type of sprites we're going for?

Not sure what the challenge means.. are we making a new sprite based on another one?

@Anonzs: Drawing inspiration from those seems fine.

@DatMuffinMan: You are making a small mythical creature, such as a fairy, imp, pixie, etc...

You are not out of colors you simply have not chosen the right 8 colors ;)

Your confusion is based on the fact that the word "sprite" has multiple meanings:
One of them is the "sprite" as we know it from games, as a 2D bitmap..
Another meaning is for a legendary creature like a troll, fairy or elve..

So this challenge wants us to create a sprite (first meaning) that shows a sprite (2nd meaning) ;)

Thanks for the help guys. I came up with this, not sure if I want to add anything (like a pet) before I clean it up. Thoughts?

It's at 2x, since it's a bit unreadable in its current state.

Final Sprite -

On a side note, the sprite has a 2-frame animation, but on imgur it doesn't loop. Will it do so on PJ?

Any suggestions? I feel like there's problems with it that I can't quite put my finger on.

@Zeeknw- You can use ezimba.com (iaza.com) to make images transparent. It's free and you don't have to download anything. Just select your file, upload, then create transparency (plain transparency.) You have to select your color that you want to use for transparency (in your case it is white), then it will let you export/save the transparent version. And keep working on it- you have all week. The lines are very unrefined (messy with sharp unoptimized angles).

Is it 8 colors and transparency or is the transparency one of the colors ?

I'm making fairy for this challange, haven't been in one for a while ...

As far as I know, transparency always counts as a color.

He reads a little big for a sprite, sprite. Maybe thinner and a better anatomy will help a lot.
Technically dithering like you use on the beard here is not the best technique.

Is it looks okay and match the rules?
Some kind of fairy in body of plush doll.

Not bad Rendyan. I would suggest taking out the dithering on his stomach/neck area, mainly the shadow dithering part. You got a lot of banding going on there because of it.

Posted By: RendyanHunter
Date Posted: 18 September 2013 at 2:03pm
I tried to avoid dithering over there, by it came awful, I disliked its look. It was really sloppy. What should I do? D:

He's Gus the Gnome. The big burly cousin of David.
Slimmed down and sans the checkerboard beard.

Now you need some contrast on your colors so it defines and implies details too small to pixel. Also, others viewing on darker colored themes will see those light grey pixels around the shoes as 'wrong' or an error.
You might also clean up the sloppy bits her and there like the shoulder on the right where it 'steps' all ugly and the side of the beard thats just a straight line.

@Nutcase- The fairy's face could be a little less cartoony. Perhaps have the head/face anatomically correct/ smaller. Slotted oval eyes instead of messed up circles, give her a nose, etc.I do like your colors and shading style.

@elk- I think your grammar could be a little better. It is also a rule of thumb, in pixel art, to capitalize your "i"s. And frowny faces are kinda cliché. Hope that helped ;)

(But elk it is looking good so far. Do you have a more current wip?)

Just a quick idea that I wanted to almost finish :) I came up with another idea, like a robot "sprite". Will that count?

Oh man! I didn't know transparency counted as a color! I almost went over the limit! xP

current WIP, and planning on animating:

She's sort of a water sprite ballerina. if you look really closely, you can see that the hair is transparent in places.

I started to make an imp, but it got too big, and I also feel like there's something wrong with it, besides that, that I just can't figure out. Any help?

(Yes, I know that I'm supposed to add transparency. I'm doing that later on.)

Well, I'm no expert, but I'm a bit confused as to what's going on with the dress(?). Is it form fitting, and the person is chubby, or is it flowy and that roundness on the left side is a flowing piece of fabric?

Any tips for the underside of the back leg where I have the dithering? Can't seem to get it right.

Posted By: Rydido
Date Posted: 21 September 2013 at 9:03am
Hmmm... maybe try dithering together the light and dark skin colors instead of the dark skin color and the black?

EDIT: Or maybe making it a solid color. I don't really know a lot about dithering atm.
