The theme for this isometric collaboration is horror. Exteriors and Interiors rooms, halls, catacombs, labyrinths, sewers, tombs, sacrificial altars and anything that fits within the horror theme is OK. As for characters, vampires, mummies, zombies, ghosts, murderers, spiders, even aliens and OTT fantasy are OK as long as they are horrorific!

Rules
You can create more than one tile but your tile may not neighbor your own tile (even diagonally).
Only one active tile reservation at any one time per participant. You must finish a tile before making a new one.
Once you reserve a tile you must post an initial WIP within 7 days so it doesn't hold others up.
Once you post an initial WIP you get 14 days to update your tile or post a comment letting us know its active. Every new WIP/post update (busy, school, work, sick, moving, etc.) thereafter buys you 14 days.
Pink outer tiles MUST use transparency to 'break the grid'. (See the http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13528 - ISOak collab edges)
Inner tiles CAN NOT use transparency.
You must use the supplied palette colors (13) only, but you don't have to use them all in your tile (Those making outer tiles will have one extra color for transparency).
NO animations.
Your tile must match the tiles surrounding yours, unless your tile has no neighbors (first 5 tiles). This will become increasingly tougher as tiles get added. Some tiles will need to match on as many as 4 sides.
Matching your neighbors does not mean it has to continue their idea/concept. Just that it blends seamlessly somehow.
Please keep the collab's general light-source and scale as shown below consistent in your tile. This may be tweaked in your tile if you use secondary light sources.
Please post your tile on its own as a comment and make sure to say what number it is and it will be added to the collab master image by a Collab Manager in order to keep the color palette true.
Your tile may be added to the master image in WIP stages if it shows the tile's direction enough to help others visualize their own tiles.

Special Rules
The first 5 tiles may be anywhere at all and require no neighboring tiles.
From the 6th tile on your tile MUST have at least one neighboring tile already posted that your tile blends into.
If one of the first 5 tiles picked is next to the first 4 tiles then #6 may pick a tile with no neighbors. Or once 5 general starting points have begun.
In the event that a tile is made without a reservation or 2 people accidentally work on the same tile a special vote may be held, or a duel to the death may be started by the 2 people.
Special rule(s) may be added to accommodate whatever loophole y'alls manage to find and exploit.

Note
s
Novice or pro, all are encouraged to collaborate.
Possible tile rejection if your tile is not in isometric projection or fails in scale.
Possible tile rejection if your tile does not match and blend into your neighbor(s) tile.
Possible tile rejection if your tile just doesn't blend in with some degree of harmony. Should this happen to you check for comments left for you...there will be some!
You can get tips and help to improve your tile on this thread. No need to make a separate WIP thread.
You are encouraged to take all c+c on your tile. You do not need to apply all given c+c but please don't ignore them. Especially from your neighbor. Remember this is a 'collaboration'.
Please use the 'PJs Image Specs' link http://www.hivemind.in/pj/specs/ - HERE to check your final tile colors has max 13 colors (14 if an outer tile) and the right colors.

This project features http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/37412.htm - Erstus ' award winning http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=16924&PN=1 - 13 color palette .
If you submit your tile to your PJ Gallery you do not need to credit
http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/37412.htm - Erstus but it would be nice of you.

This time around the theme will call for characters and these having personality and some level of expression seems likely. We have increased the people scale slightly from the classic size for this but there should be no problem with this as shown in the image below by http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/15778.htm - Pawige that is smaller than the scale for this collab. Note this is not isometric and is only a ref for general details on human sized characters.

before claiming any tile, is something like this allowed? i was thinking about a closed space for this, although i dont see anywhere on the rules we're restricted to open enviroments and such.

Met, what are you talking about? Interior and exterior are the first words of the 2nd sentence about the theme being HORROR :/

Might I reserve tile 66 my good man?

Hello.  I am confused by the example lightsource's shading.   Is the light coming from above and to the right, at a right angle?  Or is the light coming from above and to the top-right, in line with the isometric grid?

I think the intention is to have the lightsource at a right angle to the object but the shadow cast by the object is not making it work for me.  It looks like a shadow for a thin wall rather than for a box.

If the lightsource is at a right angle, the brightest part would be the rightmost edge of the cube.  The visible right side and the hidden right side would be the same shade, the top a bit darker.

If the lightsource is in line with the isometric grid, the brightest part would be the top-right edge of the cube.  The hidden right face of the cube and the top of the cube would likely be the same bright shade, the visibile right face and hidden left face the midtone, and the visible left face the darkest.

@Haze01 and ALL,
We discussed the lighting when planning and I'm pleased the first question relates to that. We always make the lightsource your bottom left example in these collabs. This time with the theme being 'horror' we are taking for granted that many will use secondary, ambient and other lightsources for perhaps dramatic effect or harder shadows or whatever certain areas end up being. The lightsource given is intended to be the 'world' general lightsource.
We'll update that main template image with your bottom left example.

First 5 tiles are reserved. In order to prevent first week traffic, I'll disturb all of you guys daily (so that a few tiles get done a.s.a.p. and open up new spaces to reserve).

@Metaru; yes your tile concept is within the rules of the collab.

Motrox and failureboy, note that the first 5 areas need to be posted as a starting point then after that all have to have a neighboring tile.

You can have that tile but you will need for Nevercreature to post his #55 first, k. Maybe he'll post a WIP soon so you have an idea what you need on that side, k.

If you don't mind my asking, why don't we save ourselves some trouble and use an actual isometric grid, instead of a diagonal diamond grid?

Posted By: jalonso
Date Posted: 29 September 2013 at 3:41pm
Mino, the diagonal is just an 'area' you claim. We have found that any grid that falls within iso angles end up showing the 'lines'. Additionally, with non-iso tiles all have to be slightly more careful about matching their neighbors seamlessly because noone is apt to 'lean' on an edge and further show the grid. An iso grid would/could bring up issues of overlapping.
*We gave that some thought :p

It's great. If you want to polish it, you can begin with the bricks and the ground (they look like concrete at the moment, which I don't think was your aim)

Updated!

I think this version is better.

Looking good, so far! Could I have 40, if you please?

@Ashkin- I think if you were to have a stronger texture or the floor that would help. I don't really dig the tiles, right now. Also, the blood on the walls doesn't seem like it is the right color for some reason. Doesn't contrast enough, I think. (see never-creature's blood)

edit: and what are you mods' opinions on text in the artwork? I recall the Iso collab before the last one had one or two instances of text. Is that allowed this time? ("Your hp or your gp")

Posted By: Gecimen
Date Posted: 01 October 2013 at 1:01pm
@crozier; Ashkin's tile is far from finished but you may edit his tile to show what you mean or pick a tile near him and show a fine example and expect him to continue that.

As for the text, we don't really plan this theme to be over comical, as it's supposed to be horror, and text usually contains funny stuff, but it is not forbidden as long as it doesn't disrupt the scene (read: no huge text boxes please).

40 is yours.

main image updated.

For the time being...a big headstone. You haven't consider the background. More on that tomorrow.

More work, I guess. Still no idea what to do with the floor tiles or anything, and the dents on the door look awful, might just remove them entirely.

It might be best to remove that which you are unsure of and leave your tile a 'seed' for your neighbors. Once others have posted theirs you can then come back with new ideas or continuations or inspirations and work in your tile.
In these collabs the first few tiles tend to be reworked more than later tiles.

@ashkin; I think the main problem with your tile is the clean looks amidst of all the butchery. You can disrupt everything in order to create a more natural look. I edited to show you what you can do, this is overdone but it should give an idea. Dithers, stray pixels, blood stains in differing sizes (rather than standard) volume for the flooring etc.

You can add more stuff within the scene (character or dead body parts) and their reflections and shadows on the flooring as well.

Posted By: crozier
Date Posted: 02 October 2013 at 11:23am
@ashkin- you could also do a checkerboard type floor pattern. Or place a little shine in it (light streaks running diagonally), perhaps. There's a lot of options. Or do something similar to Gecimen's edit (semi-random things to create texture and effects). Play around with the walls and table, because they are kind of lacking in artistic flare. Good luck.

Tile #10 WIP: Trying for a miniature of the Eye of Sauron, and perhaps a Ringwraith hovering in the upper left after that. Will update the left castle wall with detail once I see where aevis plans to take it. All help greatly appreciated!

Another update. Pixeling this felt so WRONG- I'm used to keeping things clean, and all these little dithers and things are so... non-clustery. But I think I learnt a little about textures. Also Gecimen I never would've thought of using that green to highlight the grey, that is excellent

This looks great!

Note: Sometimes the most important aspect of the collab is to practice the same piece with others. But again, of course, create your tile as it pleases you, first and foremost.

I've been staring at this for a few minutes and still have no idea what it means. Was it addressed towards me? If so, what does it mean? Have I done something not quite in the spirit of the collab? Did I not leave enough for people to continue along the edges?...

Sorry, my English isn't that good. No you've done everything perfectly. :)

I was just pointing out the way you've pixelled in a manner you hadn't before.

Ah, yeah, I get'cha. Yeah, that's why I like collabs. You get feedback, and you're forced to improve your own standard to at least come close to the people around you. Pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone is the only way to improve, and I don't think I've improved in a while- but this, combined with some other work I've been doing, has put me on the brink of something new, I think. Yay collaborations!

Yeah.. that turned out funny.
I tried couple of different color combinations that all worked, so what i meant, was to inform possible neighbours that the bridge might change in one way or another.

@Erstus, I think it looks quite beautiful in terms of color use actually. On a side note, it would be awesome if you updated the top corner soon-ish, so people can continue from thereon. No rush though.

That's looking real nice Night.

K, Reo, looking good so far. You do your thing, and I'll follow suit in my top right corner. Not sure what I am gonna do with that floating bone fragment, though ;)

What I have, so far. Still have to finish the brick wall, the riverside, and the top right part.
The dark mage's skeletal army!

If you want to fill you top left side then its cool I'll adjust to it. Those round rocks are just there because the bottom tile has them but I will edit that whole area, k.

Upload that first image to imgur.com or somewhere. It also looks like you saved as .gif in MS Paint because your colours are all messed up/everything has random noise. Take a look at the Resources subforum to see other free programs you could use.

I've updated the main image. You can now see what you're supposed to base on roughly. Reo's tile is still a WIP so feel free if you want him to make minor changes.

@Crozier; you'll have to modify your background a little.

WIP update:

I'm having problems with the background, trying for a cliff edge but I got stuck at this point. Also trying to use the lighter side of the palette so the brick wall doesn't merge with the cliff/background, but I can't get it to work at the moment. I would have gone with the darker colors but I feel the tile would be too flat. And I still need to incorporate the dragon and the eye once the background is finished;

Posted By: aeveis
Date Posted: 07 October 2013 at 6:44pm
@Acherhar hmm, perhaps if you used darker colors for the cliff-side (the part that's transparent now), and lightened up the top faces of the brick wall so there's a bit more contrast there. (like how jalonso's wall on the right side is much lighter).

Posted By: ||||

Gecimen: yes.. just that one stray pixel on the skull on the ground and maybe like 2 others less noticeable.

Nevercreature: Glad you like it neighbor! :)

Erstus: Great update, classy tile.

Archerhar: I think Aeveis left good advice about making the walls stick out on a dark backing. Although I kind of like the light backing.. idk (pointless comment)
