CHALLENGE: Crazy Chromosomes

Challenge winner, http://www.pixeljoint.com/p/45898.htm - vrine , wants you to create a piece including a creature that is a mix between your favourite animal and least favourite animal. Both animals must be distinguishable in your design.

Canvas Size - Max 300 x 300.
Colours - Max 20.
Transparency - Yes.
Animation - Optional.

CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to /pixels/submit_icons.asp'>submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the /forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8'>WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

  • Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.
  • Top finisher gets to call the following week's challenge...sweet.
  • 'Participation' ribbons will be given for all who enter.
  • No matter what happens you get challenged :)

Idea draft. Might look messy because I did this at school, and the mouse I was using was a little... how should I put this? "Wonky"?
Anyways, I'm a huge fan of birds (especially parrots, and cockatiels) because I find them cute, and I have arachnophobia (in other words, I really dislike spiders, at least IRL ones), which led me into thinking of a parrot-spider mix.
I also need help with deciding a title; just "Spider Parrot" isn't enough, I want to go with something like "Arachnitiel" or "Cockatula" (I love pormanteau words).

I love bunnies. Fluffy and cute bunnies!
But I can't stand the presence of a bed bug in my room... So let me introduce the Bed Bugnny! (That stupid name is temporary!)

Spiders aren't creepy. Some of them actually have fur. And things with fur aren't creepy. QED.

I hope there are some submissions that don't include insects (or arachnids) as well. Or even reptiles. There must be some mammals that people hate. What about chihuahuas? Or spitting llamas? What about raccoons?

Not me, I actually like every animal except spiders, mosquitoes (who does?), and a few other bugs. And that raccoon looks really cute when it steals some of cats' food <3

More progress. I did the head and just begun doing some of the wing. I think I'll be using just the colors I currently have, maybe I'll add more to the palette if I need to.

Oddly enough, one of my favorites animals are dogs, while my LEAST favorite animal is without question, also dogs. Let me also clarify that I am referring to those tiny yappy rat-dogs that never shut up.

I guess a mammal a lot of people hate are rats. Some people also find pigeons repulsive.
What abut fish? It would be interesting if someone shows up with something mixed with a sea lamprey :3

Well, this is how my entry went so far

I tried to make another version with more sophisticated shading with indirect backlights but I failed miserably, so i'm sticking with this one.
I guess i'm done. Any crits or suggestions are highly appreciated! :D

Maybe add some highlights on fur, legs and posterior? I don't know if you already tried this though, I can't tell if you did since your explanation isn't very clear to me when it comes to knowing stuff you already tried.

That looks wonderful! And I disagree with Eggy, it doesn't need more highlights, it'd make it look fake and plasticy.

So I went with Eggy's suggestion and made a more highlighted version

I think the highlights enphasized his insect bright chitin parts, but i also think the simple flat colored fur of the previous version has some appeal too. So I'm not sure what to choose.

Sorry to hear someone disagreeing with me :( But it is your opinion after all. I though it'd look better/more realistic with highlights.

I like the version with highlights better :) But yeah, since I was the one to suggest it, I guess my opinion doesn't really count?

I don't know if I'm going to make it, since this whole week I haven't really worked on this.
I'm not really good with wings and stuff (but I did try looking at a reference image) so please tell me if something's wrong.

Looks great, PCecile. Very disgusting. I feel like it would look even better if the 'belly' was a bit thicker. Right now, the head looks a bit too big for its body.

The head also looks a little bit pillowshaded to me. Judging by the feet and the rest of the body, I guess the light source is below, so maybe the head should show that better.

@PCecile I loved the colors you used. I just think that the texture of the fur under the wings could be a little more smooth. The wings are great too.

Progress:

Did more of the wing, and tried to texturize at the head so it feels more like feathers. (Fact: For some reason, I can't stand having two colors clash.)
I wonder if my piece is going to make it?

Thanks everyone for the feedbacks! It's so nice.

So I've done the belly a little bit bigger, the head a little bit smaller and the fur a little bit smoother.

But now I have a problem, Photoshop is telling me I'm using 28 colors but.. currently I only see 12 (13 with transparency)



How can I do? Is it a real problem for the challenge?

Edit : problem solved! Added some few colors so there are 19 now

I'm pretty much done. Submitted to the challenge.
I'm aware that the legs don't match 100% and that wings look like they were just stickied/tacked on, right now I have no time to change that. Also, I rushed its right wing, so it doesn't look as good as the other one...
