Ruff!

I am doing daft punk. I have a fairly good grasp of where to go from here.

@Limes, that is way too big a canvas for you. Reduce by 75%.

I'm doing a tribute to Tenacious D - Tribute, got Jack Black and Kyle basically done, any C&C on them would be great, need to do the demon and some tiles.

@All, calling dibs is cool and fun
but no one should change their ideas because someone called it.
This is not in the challenge rules.

"Canvas Size - Unrestricted."

I am unsure why my canvas is too large.

It's not a restriction but a suggestion.
Pixel art is a long process if you want to make everything properly and the purpose of PA is to place each pixel carefully and don't leave any detail without attention.
Considering your the time restriction and the fact you are a beginner, you should stick to smaller pieces for the moment.

It's up to you if you want to spend one week on a huge piece to achieve a result witch might not be satisfying or even unfinished, this is only a suggestion and I must agree with him.

Well, its a real strong suggestion as pointed out by FrostPumpkin.
In pixelart less is always more. Less colors, less canvas, less birds in the sky, less everything so there can be more, more and even more pixel level focus.
If it were entirely up to me all PJers would have max canvas size and max color use restrictions based on their work, skills and experience built into their profile.

He's from Kiss, intended to be the second one from the left http://www.thebayonline.com/upload/Klug/KISS-kiss-30725681-800-600.jpg - here (I'm unfamiliar with the band). I'll add more clothing later on to unify all 4 members though.

Oh! that's genious.
I would maybe keep them 4 in blacks and white to better read KISS???
Will they all be animals or their character (vampire, cat, spaceman, gender bending star thing with a hairy chest)

Hmm, it's probably a good idea to at least keep the faces consistently black and white. And I'm not sure what I'll make the others into, just that the first one will be the "berserker" of the group.

The concept is The two daft punk guys fighting a goblin.
All text will be in french The main thing I wanted to show here was my progress on the character portrait showing who is talking. I will work on the bars and attack options menu and the mini map and what not next.

And the day after that I shall work on the actual miniature characters. It is a long WIP, Colors I am still working out but I wont actually need that many maybe 20 at max.

Quick mock up with 4 tiles, need to work on the GUI, some more tiles and refine everything... holding off until got a better idea of colour count before I do finishing touches on characters. With work, overtime and my girlfriends birthday not sure how much I will have so keeping it simple so I can finish it

Eh, probably not going to have enough time to do a full mock-up for this week's challenge, but here's my Gorillaz sprites so far:

logged in to post for my first time just to say those Gorillaz sprites are awesome

and it would be amazing to make a game to follow the stories of their albums.

I've got it mostly done now, but hit a bit of a wall on how to improve on it and get it finished, any constructive criticism would really be appreciated.

Hey skoby, nice work so far :)
here are a few fixes you can make :
The brick tiles can use a bit of variation, and also less contrast (to help readability, right now it's quite busy and kyle needs to pop more)
Try removing the outline on the bottom of the cactus at the point where it touches the ground so it kind of merges.
The shadows are a nice touch for ambiance ! but don't forget the characters
Finally, the GUI can use some work, for example I think it would be better placed if it was on the bottom of the image, that way you have more space to put informations and the overall screen will look less busy.

Hope it helps ! Good luck everyone :)

Thanks for the help, I've not had time to re-do the GUI today, not quite sure how to arrange it at the bottom but will figure something out. I tried dialling down the contrast and adding more variation in the bricks, but still wasn't happy with it so I've re-done it as flagstones.
