The working title is actually "Baumvieh" but I intend to name the finished piece "Hunger!".
I've been working on this thing for quite some time already and
originally I planned to show the final colored version only, but I got
too excited and wanted to show my progress:
steps done so far
1) freehand mouse sketch
2) clean pixelled lineart
3) improved lineart, added hair and fixed body
steps todo
4) improve lineart more (clouds and fixing whatever I will find looking odd...)
5) coloring, shading, lighting, aa-ing... (these will probably take the most time)
(edit: updated, might need to refresh page, working on step 4
updated again, changed cloud and tail, step 4.
updated again, another cloud change, step 4..
updated, started with step 5
updated, 5....... (finished the hair))

does he have a lower body? is he some sort of turkey human hybridd? it
looks like it just ends with those feathers or bades of grass there...
very unique concept. he's a giant right? i like the rolling hills in
the back ground. i think you should do something with the seem between
the arms and the body, like have some hair or feather downpoking over
like what you did with the neck...

He doesn't have a lower body and I was thinking of an ostrich, not of a turkey.
If he's a giant or not... Well he sure is chunkier and stronger than
your average human, but a standing human would be about as tall as this
thing, just that a humans arms would be much weaker and also a humans
head would be only 1/4 of the volume of this creatures head, maybe even
smaller.
I changed the seem on the arm and chest and started working on step 4.
Thanks for your feedback MurrMan.
Note to self: practice doing clouds, before going on.

The clouds that i normally see that are that large form flat bottoms...
and dont be afriad to draw a couple of towering shapes in the clouds
like a cumulonibus. googlr cumulonibus and you should see some results.

Its looking good so far....but, I will point out that your composition
is losing it some since the cloud was added. The Branch in his mouth
point east, the banana leaf skirt points east, the worm looks east, the
cloud is pointy toward the east... see what I mean here is boring this
way. I would try for a more dynamic comp where things balance
themselves out more and even revolve around the key element (the worm)

I think I will completely throw the clouds away, because I have googled
for cloud reference pictures and tried to add better looking clouds,
but unfortunately wherever I tried to place it and no matter how I
formed it, it turned out to clutter the scene badly.
I only have one more idea where to place a cloud and how to do it,
which I will try doing after writing this post. (letting the bottom
start at 1/3rd between arm and branch, going all over the full width to
the left and letting it pile up higher and higher, forming a some sort
of P turned ninety degrees to the right and then mirrored along the
horizontal axis)
(btw, you have a typo there MurrMan: cumulonimbus is the correct term)
I am afraid I lack the artistic education to follow your words
jalonso... What is a key element and what function does it fulfill?
And are there any good tutorials on composition?
(So far I found a very short one (in german though) which said in one
sentence: "A succesfull composition is achieved by balancing unity and
multiplicity."
Combining that sentence with your words, I assume unity and
mulitplicity are to be balanced for position and orientation of the
various elements.
(edit: P.S.: I forgot to add: I'll have to change the tail, since
everybody seems to see it as grass or banana leaves, when really I want
it to resemble something like feathers. )

Hellow fellow! Nice to see more Allegroids around.
I will make a game as soon as I get my motivation for coding back.
Currently my motivation is just about enough to get my arse out of the
bed each morning and to do some non-game-content-related pixelling.
Another thing holding me back is that when my coding motivation comes
back, the first thing I should finish is my dynamic color gradient
generator tool and write all the documentation for it.(argh! writing
documentation is boring.)
Back on topic:
I put in a new cloud, which I might still kill off when I get to color
the scene, because I'm not all too happy with it. I think it's ok for
now. Also changed the tail.

Ive edited your clouds a bit to give them a cloud feel. what i did is i
varied the edges a bit and erased the lines near the bottom of each
"puff" as lower i got in the cloud. i also made it a little wispy to
show that ther might be a slight cross wind. Additionaly, i added a 2nd
spire.

Hey that's looking cool MurrMan.
I will change the cloud yet again, following your example. The only
thing keeping me from just taking and using your modified cloud is that
I want to be able to say, I've done the whole piece myself in the end.
(Please don't be angry about it, but the doing-it-myself part is very
important to me.)

Updated the cloud once more and this time I even like how it turned
out. (Though I still might change it later to make some of its
"puffs"(good term ) more roundish.)
I'd like to call the lineart finished now and I'm going to start coloring soon, beginning with the foreground.

Yo, I've started working on step 5 now and to make it a really really
really tough challenge, I decided to have only 16 colors and I picked
the colors in advance.
So the challenge for me is to make something good of it with just those fixed colors.
(uh oh...)
Needless to point out that the current transitional state with flat colors looks like total CRAP!!!. (but that's the challenge, I've choosen to take on for myself... )

Oh, ok I'll just have to try finishing without knowing then. Thanks nonetheless.
Coloring is already in progress snader. If I fail, I can still go back
to the lineart and start over but first I have to at least try to
finish the challenge that I set for me.

Looks pretty interesting so far. I was a bit hesitant about how the
colors would turn out, but it seems you've gotten them laid out nicely.
I think the arm holding the root could use less intense shadows where
his muscles connect, like along the side of his elbow area and where
his shoulder meets his upper arm. A faint reflected light on his bicep
towards the edge might round it out some. Currently the whole section
being midtone makes his bicep look like it's round on the sides and
flat on top.

Thanks for pointing that out Blick, I hope the arm is ok now.
Currently my progress is very slow, still working on the body. Maybe I don't have enough colors...
Souly:
What does "Red X" mean? (in case it refers to the screenshot not being
displayed: it's a .png (portable network graphic), so you might need to
get a newer version of your browser to display it. Sometimes it's also
the webspace where it is hosted that is unreachable, though that should
only be rarely the case.)

Finished the body and made a few attempts at coloring the tailfeathers.
What you're looking at is the fourth attempt already and I pushed
around each pixel probably 8 to 12 times, until I found something that
looked ok on the tail.
One thing I already noticed is that the whole thing doesn't look good
at high resolutions, because the colors bleed into each other too much.
(I'm pixelling it at a 640x480 resolution.)
Other than that, I'm quite happy how it is progressing.

Thanks for all the moral support, everyone. :)
The programme is called "Personal Paint" and it was made by Cloanto. (I also posted this to the http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixels/links.asp?id=2244 - Graphics(Misc) tools .)
So nope, I didn't write the tool myself, but I always wanted and still want to make my own pixel-art tool someday.
(I once wrote a very basic one under TurboPascal, but as I had just
started learning to code back then, the tool was not too useful and it
only supported .raw format. I'll see if I can dig it out from an old
backup CD.)

how are you using cloanto paint there? Is it through emulation? I checked the links page but no luck.
I used to love using personal paint by cloanto, only software with AGA chipset support until DP5

I hotlinked the section with Personal Paint inside... how could you not find it?
Yes, I'm using it through emulation. As also mentioned on that links
page, Cloantos Personal Paint is included in some versions of Cloantos
AmigaForever CD, which contains fully licensed Amiga Kickstart ROMs and
a preconfigured Workbench environment. The used emulator is WinUAE.
P.S.: I just uploaded the latest update (hair). I won't have much time
to pixel until next thursday, so progress will probably not be made
until then.
P.P.S.: I found my old crappy pixel tool and uploaded it http://people.freenet.de/dennisbusch/shared/NewDraw.zip - here .
Read the included readme.txt, before you run it. Run at your own risk.
Expect nothing, it's old and I barely knew how to code at that time.

I just wanted to announce that this is still being worked on. :)
I didn't have time to continue working on it though, because I'm still
suffering from a headache, a running nose and a sore throat and during
all that, I still found the time to worry about my future, so meh...
I will continue working on this in smaller steps but I think i'm not
going to update this thread everytime, so the finishing of this piece
is yet again delayed and maybe i'll just upload the final piece to the
gallery someday.
Thanks for all the interest and comments. :)

Closing the thread? How can i do that?
(I don't want to close it yet...)
updated: 5........

Like I said, I continued to work on this in very small steps and I hope
enough of those mini-steps have accumulated to justify another update.
Texturing the full tree will take a few hours i think, and I feel
stupid repeating it, but time is currently very sparse here, so I
apologize to anyone who is waiting for this to get finished.
Oh and since the thread is two pages now, i placed the image on the
second page as well, so that you don't always have to go back to the
first page to view the update.

Thanks a lot Larwick and Di0xygen. Well, skillwise I would not say i'm
highly skilled and my color "understanding"(i'd be careful with that
too) is just the result of a lot of trial and error placing of pixels.
I select a color, place it, check if it looks ok and if not try another
color until i'm somewhat satisfied. I don't always know where i will
put what pixel right from the start... it's just lots of trying and
checking and trying and checking. (and I work very slowly)
(But I do consider this piece the best I can currently do. )
Oh I've finished the background now as well, but kept it in a simpler,
cleaner style than the foreground for two reasons: 1) to not distract
from the foreground too much 2) because I don't feel like working on
this anymore (for now)
Maybe I will someday come back to it but currently I feel so exhausted
and I think the clean background fits well, so I'll call it finished
for now.
Thanks again everyone for the feedback.
Now how do I close this thread?
