a work-in-progress. It uses only 6 colors till now. So i can add 2 to foreground and two-three to background. I do know that i have to correct the leaves and rust a lot. But thats possible in a week ;).

WIP corroded ball mask in rusty water?

First post, first time trying pixel art. Challenge sounded fun so I gave it a shot (I have no idea what I'm doing).
It's a robot stuck into a cliff face gathering rust and vines growing on him.

120x120, 9 colors including white.

Oh my. I can't understand any of these. All I see is brown and blue. Looks like my fathers truck.

Limes has raised a bit of a concern. Is this readable?
I wanted to go for something that wasn't glaringly obvious, and was a little abstract.

Posted By: Limes
Date Posted: 03 September 2014 at 4:01am
I think it would be more readable if I knew wtf a ball mask even was.

Edit:0.00008 seconds after posting.

Oh like a mardi gras mask?

I understood the water part and how that was rusted but not the object(mask) that is in the water.

It red abstract really strongly to me, which might be risky considering rust is something that happens to an object unless you take it a a figurative term like the man was old and rusted.

Aye, mardi gras mask.
Still working on rusting it up, but it's going to be difficult adding detail and maintaining readability. Thanks for the comments.

EDIT:

10 colours

doctordrg, im sure it will become less a problem as you continue refining and adding detail.  All you need is more context for both water and mask and rust.  We need detail to immediately know it's water, perhaps refracted web-like waves, or a sun spot.  For the mask, maybe add something else associated with a ball, but not so much that it takes away from the importance of the mask.  Maybe like a ball ticket or entry stub right before the water, with a corner dipping into the water etc

Hi, yeah doctordrg please work a bit at the maskl under the water. I didn`t recognize it at first and did understood it after reading posts. we will  see thats it is a ball mask then.

http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=48225&FID=1 - CaptainDesk   has poste an interesting picture, but the robot needs reworking ( tought of a teddy bear at first )= )  and schould also use more space on the canvas.

B.t.w how is my first posted  picture. Is it understandable what it shows. will work at it in some hours agian and post a newer version here..

Its great to see that some new people post  here b.t.w

Simple idea, something like old "mechanical gripper" on scrapyard or factory.

I really like the design froste, idk about that AA I think it is hugging.

Really try to work on making it pop. That is my problem when I draw lines first it comes out flat and is a pain to fix.

Here's my WIP, if I've got time and it looks ok I may add some battle damage style gouging.

Comments gratefully received.

You know what felch I hade the exact same idea Celt mine was a giant robot with a tiny man rubbing off the rust so half of him was clean. It was a symbolism about cleaning up your act. Or recovering from a rough life.

The last thing that I don't know is palette. I don't know which colors I should pick, I thought about this 3 palettes, but this does not convince me...

Blue i like the top one better. it smooths out the background and takes focus back to the rust. just my thoughts

Date Posted: 05 September 2014 at 10:58pm

sadly i just got started tonight. It will be a tree made of metal rusted plateing.

Posted By: Killapeanutz
Date Posted: 05 September 2014 at 11:41pm
not to spam u guys with images but I'm pretty hyped about this one so here is my stoping point for tonight. any tips would be much appreciated i feel some of the plateing may be out of place. I will sort it all out tomorrow but considering this is like my third or fourth piece of pixel art ever i feel its coming along pretty smoothly.

Hello guys, I am new to the forums, and to pixel art entirely. This is my first ever completion, although, since I am new, I wouldn't call it complete quite yet. It is a 32x32 sized rusty pickaxe complete with ores. We still have two days left so I want to make the best of it and take into consideration any and all suggestions I get. Thank you

http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=48247&FID=1 - Killapeanutz your tree is nice and clean so far . Hope  and think it `ll look good at final version.

http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=48256&FID=1 - Arctic Mango   Nice blending, however think you only have 20 colors, and you need to include the rust aspect a bit more. the pickaxe could also look like that because a fire or ornage light  nearby. Perhaps increase the canvas size a bit to include rusted artefacts.

I hate to post a third picture when I'm not but half done... however i feel things have progressed nicely considering my lack of free time lately... I just want to see if anyone sees any flaws so far. I also am not going to be using these exact colors i am just picking colors at random for the time being.

@Killa - I'd like to see a bit more of the trunk and I think the bough that the swing is hanging off could be a bit thicker.

Thanks felch I really wish i could have applied your comments to the work but i got a job offer today to make 50$ so killed all my work time on it :/ but money is more important than a contest i suppose. anyways i appreciate the second prospective and wish i could have applied it.
