CHALLENGE: Pumpkin Patch

Create a pumpkin avatar that is lit by at least two distinct external light sources (lights inside the pumpkin don't count).

You are encouraged to use it as your avatar until the end of the month.

Canvas Size - Max 64 x 64.
Colours - Max 31.
Transparency - Optional.
Animation - Optional.

CHALLENGE RULES

  • Participants have until this upcoming Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) to /pixels/submit_icons.asp'>submit their entry (strict). Don't forget to check the 'Submit to weekly challenge' checkbox.
  • Only new pixels allowed.
  • Open to all members.
  • Posting WIPs in this thread or in new threads in the /forum/forum_topics.asp?FID=8'>WIP section is highly encouraged, but ONLY SUBMIT YOUR FINAL ART.

CHALLENGE JUDGING

  • Every Sunday at midnight (12AM Pacific) the previous week's entries are judged.
  • Every week a new voting poll will be posted for previous week's entries.
  • Winner announced the following week.

CHALLENGE PRIZES/GOODIES

  • Top three finishers will receive an award displayed in your PJ gallery profile for all to see and envy.
  • Top finisher gets to call the following week's challenge...sweet.
  • 'Participation' ribbons will be given for all who enter.
  • No matter what happens you get challenged :)

Pumpkin avatars are a Pixeljoint tradition in the month of October.
Newer PJers this is your time to have one. Older PJers to lazy or have never gotten around to making yours consider this challenge a kick in the ass.

@all, if you enter this week's challenge or already have your pumpkin from previous years change your avvy and post anything on the gallery's news item so we see all the pumpkins :)

My attempt at something. Those things will be the light sources. My pumpkin isn't the best, though. Also, palette.

So, here's my WIP.
The main question is - would the moon fit as a light source?

And would it still fit if I delete the moon, but leave it's reflection?

Worked on it a little bit more.

And I still doubt if this blue reflection on the left counts.

Wip2 Trying to use all 31 colours for fun (only at 16 right now)

Nice! My only crit would be that you should try to fool around with your colour palette a bit more, try to give it a bit more diversity by using more than just one spot of hue on the colour ramp for your greens. Try going from blue to green to make it a bit more interesting!

Yes! That's more like it! One last thing I noticed is that there's a lot of banding going on around some parts. The blue to green shift really makes it a lot better already.


Gonna animate it now. It's actually sort of difficult to think of ways to use 31 colours :L

Mmm, well in all honesty it kind of strays a bit from the bubblegum style imho. If that's the type of style that you're shooting for though, then take a look at pixeljoint user Skeddles work, bubblegum style usually doesn't have a lot of single pixels, it uses a lot of pixel clusters and most of the time has a dark outline around objects.

Yeah, I was thinking of doing that too. I'm also going to try to give it a little bouncy affect to practice sub-pixel animation. Thanks for the suggestion!

The upper-right light source doesn't look right, but I can't work out why.

@Trickythetiger I might be wrong, but I seem to see only one external light source? Did you forget about a second one or I am blind?

@Drazile Your pumpkin has a great character! As for the lighting, it might seem weird because for the sort of lighting you went for the light source would have to be pretty close and also the shadows to the side ignore it almost completely. I tried to draw in how the light sources (made them radial ones since thats most common) would work in your picture, maybe that could help you?


@felchqueen The cat face is actually cute, hah :) Though, I would recommend you to revisit the green lightning. The orange one is done absolutely great, so it's kind of sad that the green doesn't stand up to the same quality.

@ADrawingMan Wow, I am loving the flame! looking forward to the result of animation :)


A concept of what I might be going for so far, though I feel it's too crowded right now. Pirate pumpkin yay!

Unripe pumpkins are green. Ripe pumpkins are orange and also cultural associations.

There are some squashes (for example kabocha) that people mistake for a pumpkin because of their shape, but yeah, otherwise only an unripe pumpkin is green. There are also white, red or blue pumpkins actually, but no green ones.

Just put a table or something to the background. You can even keep it as it is.

The lighting is very well done. You could smooth out the lines etc.

Wrong colors. The green/blue shades are far too saturated for the orange ramp.

More or less the same as my previous submission since all it has is a bouncy effect going on.

Your animation looks great,I think your colors are too bright, but maybe its just me :p
just curious, what program did you use?

btw, I get the exact same error here at the moment I try to submit my entry.. I tried 3 different browsers and restarting computer won't help.. I hope it'll be fixed soon.. :s

I used Photoshop for making this piece. What did you use for yours?
About my colours - they are mostly from DawnBringer's 32 colour palette which was posted somewhere on these forums, but I cannot find the link now, unfortunately. It is a pretty versatile palette for pixel art.
