I don't quite understand what's meant by "original"- are we supposed to come up with our own idea for a board game, or create a mockup that depicts an existing one?

Your own game, however, it can resemble any mechanics there is.
The point is, most existing board games already have a digital version.

It would be funny if created mockup would match upcoming ludumdare theme.

I know, I'll do a version of chess with modified rules that I created a while ago (I called it chezz). There are two classes: sword and gun. All players move like a king would in normal chess. Each turn, one player can attack. Sword attacks all 8 adjacent squares, and gun attacks one line of squares.

There are also walls and stuff.

Sounds interesting already...

WIP

The location of those darker knights isn't permanent. It's just me getting their colours straight.
The transparency is only there because I don't know what else to put there yet.

Interesting, though I think you should make the board tiles perfectly square- in these sort of top-down-RPG-ish views, visual appeal generally wins over realistic perspective.

Also, I'm assuming vertical is allowed and the "horizontal or horizontal" thing was just a typo. If not, then I guess mine won't count toward the challenge- assuming I can even complete it on time. I've thought about doing a sort of simplified tabletop RPG-type game with a dungeon as the setting and the generic skeletons and bats and orcs and whatnot, although at this point I've really only planned out the GUI to show cards and options and all that.

I have an idea I may work on. It's called "No Farm No Vowel."

Does it have to display whole board?

That would be a good idea. What are you planning?

Just wondering if one could just show couple tiles of monopoly board and draw higher resolution pieces instead of fitting whole monopoly board into 320x200 canvas. That would kinda ruin the whole idea of board game mockup, wouldn't it?

"create a mockup of an original digital board game."

Monopoly already exists so you can't use that.

Well that was not the point. The point was if I were to create a monopoly-like board game and zoom in to couple game pieces (tin soldiers for example) would it still be considered a board game?

Of course it would. There are thousands of board games out there that use figures.

Sorry if this is clear to other people. By original does that mean you cannot base the board game on an existing mythology (ie. Starcraft or Final Fantasy or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would be off limits as a subject matter)?

I'd like to use an existing IP like one of the examples above to create an "original" boardgame. Is this acceptable?

Thanks.

edit: I guess to be specific I'd like to use the MagiNation IP which as far as I can tell has been a card game, gameboy game, and tv show. But never a board game in the sense of what I'd like to make .

Star Craft has an existing board game, but yes you can use an existing IP and as long as you don't copy the existing board game; it's original.

Well, here's the mockup GUI for my entry. 20 colours, done vertically based on the assumption that it's allowed and "horizontal or horizontal" is a typo. I've basically got all weekend to get the actual board done, now.

I'm not sure if that water is meant to just be a rough sketch or not, but it looks awfully scratchy. I'd suggest putting your shading into larger clumps with smoother, thicker lines, especially around the brightest highlight. What you've done so far is pretty good, though; your colour ramps seem quite nice and I'm interested to see the final version.

Couldn't disagree more. This is more stylish as is to me.

I agree. Throw a bit of AA to soften a bit and it will be beautiful.

That's the thing- I'm not sure AAing is really possible with those colours. And I'm not trying to be critical in saying that; it's just how it is.

lol yeah the water is still WIP. I think part of the problem is there's still a large blue band that is't blended in. We'll see how much time I have to come back to it, right now I'm not even sure how much it will be visible if I put other elements on top of the water area, so I'm just trying to finish up the land first.

thanks for the suggestions. not exactly sure how to anti alias the water with 4-5 available colors, maybe I could move the colors closer together. I've already toned down the high color.

Pretty much got the board done, just need to add a few more traps/objects.

I've still got no idea how I'm going to do the player and monster pieces; hopefully I'll figure something out in time.

Damn, hours before the end of the challenge I come up with the best game: Hungry Hungry Games. Well, no time now, so may the odds be ever in your favor, all who participates.

What would 'Hungry Hungry Games' involve?

Cheetos and Mountain Dew are involved I'd wager.
