Hello there, I am new to the forums and new to the pixel world. This is my first try ever, a head portrait, what do you think ? All critics are welcome.

Not a bad start.
I think the proportions are a little off if you're gong for realistic results.
The eye line should be in the centre of the "circle" of the head and the ears should line up with the eyebrows and bottom of the nose.
You need to pick a direction for the light source and highlight in relation to it. The nose and cheeks will look better.
Find some facial analysis diagrams online for more guidance.

I'd start with black and white based on black and white reference if possible. Then you can clearly see how your features and light source match up with real stuff.
