So I started this fighting game background for another forum and
thought I'd get c+c here since that forum is mostly programmers. I was
wondering if going from a very flat foreground and going to a mock
perpective looks OK. Is that lame?

The front buildings wont be that boxxy, they're just there to help visaulize.
EDIT: the sprite is not by me

the background is super-f**king-awesome in the first pic, but in the second it looks qutie distorted. the foreground tiles seem abit overdithered as well - Almost as if you're placing patterned lines instead of thinking how it would actually look, and it makes the rooftops look almost too clean. the windows on the red building also don't make much sense, I have no idea what's going on with them to be darkened and all of a seemingly different brightness - the front building roof and the back building roofs should be of different brightnesses, else the player might think of them as platforms [and you're not going to be able to jump ontop of a building roof in the background; it just wouldn't make sense.] I can't find much else to crit about this for now, but I do like the overall look except for some of those parts I mentioned.

I am new to pixel arting but Think this looks alittle to cludder, (2nd pick) stearing at that for an extremly long time would start hurting my eyes,Its great work, but the back ground seems to have too much, maybe thats just me though.
I been told alot sometimes less is better, maybe that holds true here?

I dont think the background's the problem, that's brilliant (although i dont like the scanlined look. And the 'car' lights in the first one didnt really look like such.) The stuff in the foreground is too sharp and contrasted for me.

i think those are meant to be street lights not car lights larwick
and yeah, the second one is way too cluttered.

Yes, a background needs to remain just that- a background. The most recent one is a bit to busy for this purpose, to the point of being distracting/disorienting. The rear background layers are fine, but the frontal ones are too "fused" with the foreground. One solution may be to lower the brighness of this background layer, to make it less "fused" with the foreground objects.

Back to the drawing board.
I see everyone's point about the overall busyness. I am very new to
game bkgs so I really appreciate ALL comments on this. The programmeros
of this clan really love it as is, but they may not be very artistic so
I'm counting on the PJclan

the backgroung is getting a bit fuzzy, the buildings have quite kewl designs.
i think there should be a little more space between two windows or doors of the front most building.
otherwise it's AWESOME!

I still some pixels taht just seem random and out of place on the rooftop tiles, but you can tell what's on the main plain now, so that's defenitely an improvement, the background is much cleaner, but some of those buildings in the background [the big ones] just seem like they have too much dither on them. some of those flat color blocks seem out of place compared to the business of everythign else. I'm too tired to go into moer depth than this right now :(

This updates includes all the concerns raised here I hope. I have
unified the colors down to 24 (can be 18 but not finished, excludes the
6 colors on the sprite)
@leel and snader, I did not make the sprites for this game. I modified
the colors a bit, I will attempt to get the spriter to modify his
palette too cuz he's not supposed to be asian, actually I don't know
what "it" is.
@Shark, hope your eyes feel better XD
@Lar and BtG, the contrast is more consistent, I hopes
@Those who loved the background, sorry it had to go (I actually hated it)
@Setz, I think I will never please you
and finally to quote Flameruler13, more c+c PLLEEEEAAZZZEEEEEE

HOLY CRAPGASM.
If this were a game, the number one thing that would piss me off is that I'd always try use the background as platforms. I mean, it's too PRETTY to be a background.
And I'd probably bail on the faintest row of buildings. It probably would look fine without them. Either that or down the contrast so they're even subtler.

It is for a game. I see your point Sab. I'm a detail person and find
simplifying this really hard to do. Back to the drawing board, I
thought I had made great progress with this update too

Update with alkaline and Beefur's suggestions. I've also deepened the
blues for a darker night, light or dark? This should be pretty much
finished now unless there are other glaring errors.
