Hi, I'm making a game inspired on the classic Mega Man, using NES-like graphics.

Someone recently mentioned being confused by the fact that you can't land on these purple pipes:

My approach with the graphics in this game, is that I need enough contrast between the foreground and background. In this case, all foreground is bright greens and grays, while the background is using the 2 darkest shades of purple

The player's eyes would focus on the bright parts (the green and gray floors and bright/animated objects) and ignore anything purple/dark

This image shows the value contrast between foreground and background:

This is the second area of the level, which uses red pipes:

Which also has different values than the foreground:

Could I improve this somehow, or is it just that one guy trying too hard to find something to criticize?

The purple pipe is lined up and connected, indeed making it look like a walkable extension of the platform.

What about this?

I love it all but see the confusion with the purple pipes too and just shifting them is not really working. I think you might just have to not have them touch the 'lit' ones at all or maybe even not 'light' them (2 colors and dithering) because in the purple screen its a bit more clear but in the red pipes it could read confusing too.

I made the grey pipes meatier, and the purple pipes don't connect to them anymore

That's very clear now :)

Why do you need to have the purple pipe go through the foreground pipe? Even after all these edits you still have them passing through each other. If it's no longer "connected" pipe why must they overlap?

Removing this overlap would help a lot.

As much as anything else having this continuous ground level of pipe that's all overlapping is making this confusing. 0_o

I think that the size and alignment of the purple pipe in the first image isn't a problem, but the way that it connects to the foreground pipe is confusing. It might look better if the foreground pipe looked like it turned towards the background to connect with the background pipe.

Here's an example I whipped up quickly:

Got to agree with http://pixeljoint.com/forum/member_profile.asp?PF=45558&FID=8 - Iscalio . as long as it's somewhat lined up with the walkable ground it would be confusing.Even in the latest edit eyes just naturally follow that line. Takes a moment to process that it's not walkable further.
A bit confusing with reds too. I think removing the brightest red from them would do the trick though. Pushing them further back so they're not fighting for attention with the walable stuff.

A quick edit?
