I'm so excited about this! Really curious about the new theme and tile shape.

This is funny. Couple of days ago I created 17 cols palette for Ludum Dare game (but 2 of them were very similar and one of this 2 was poorly used).

Not an entry, I doubt that pre-created palletes are allowed.
Just want to share.
And some art made by me and Dmitry Karimov (non pj-er).

Same question, are pre created palletes allowed?

Pre-created palettes is cool so long as they are yours.

ooooh! finlal that's gorgeous!

Hmm.
Never concidered that my palette could be gorgerous.
Maybe I shoud participate with it (if you're not sarcastic).
But it needs to be polished.
I've never created palettes before. Any advices?

I'm not close to being experienced in colors, but you have a lot of blues, browns, and grays. I'd suggest replacing a few with some greens and purples. I love the mood of the palette though :D

Posted By: Finlal
Date Posted: 22 April 2015 at 12:17pm
@SpeedyCube, yeah, you're right.
During LD lack of greens was pain in the arse.

Ahh, yes.
I can do both this and the Earth Day challenge
Which I can use 8 colors for. So I may just take what I have for that and add more intermediary colors.
*EDIT* realized I forgot the word colors

So DawnBringer could come in here with DB16 and like beat everyone? q:

EDIT:
Here's my palette. Too lazy to make any real art, so I made this demonstration thingy:

Just the palette with HEX #s as shown on the template. Use the template. Don't worry we test to determine the winners.
Well balanced and harminc is the goal but that does not mean it has to include all color option. It may be monochromatic if you're feeling it.

They are all listed somewhere. I'm sure Gecimen has links to them all but you can search the forum for 'iso' and 'color comp' to find them all.

Argh. Everything I'm trying to do with this palette doesn't work.
Even the slightest change ruins everything, especially adding greens.
Let's just say it's good as it is, for some purposes.
In last challenge [thUg] made 10 palettes, so I guess I am allowed to do one more.

Posted By: jalonso

Yes, you can do more than one but follow the PJ motto: Quality over quantity.

I know, I know. I'm not going to make 10 palettes.
It's just that that palette is good as it is and I don't want to change it.
I'll try to make next one more balanced in hue.

Unlimited entries? Good.

Does DawnBringer do those elaborate palette showcase things by hand? Wow.

Posted By: SpeedyCube
Date Posted: 23 April 2015 at 5:27am
I think he uses his vast set of Grafx2 scripts, DB's toolbox if I recall correctly

Posted By: DawnBringer
Date Posted: 23 April 2015 at 5:44am
Both. Some things are done by hand, but mostly it's scripts. This is what the next version of the main analysis script produces right now (wip).

@Drazile: That's a pretty decent palette (note that the bg-color hasn't yet been omitted from the dithers and 12-bit diagram)

Posted By: Finlal
Date Posted: 23 April 2015 at 6:16am
@Dawnbringer, is there something in your current toolbox that can generate this little thing?

Posted By: DawnBringer

@Finlal: Yes, a slightly more basic version is present:

Might join this competition, I love this kinda of stuff!
Came up with something:

You can obviously spot the problems in it - it needs a lot of refining (and it's missing 4 colours, which can be very useful later on).

Posted By: Finlal
Date Posted: 23 April 2015 at 6:48am
@Dawnbringer, thanks! Somehow I didn't notice it earlier.

Posted By: Eggy
Date Posted: 23 April 2015 at 7:13am
Yeah... And this marks the first time I've attempted something like this.

I don't expect it to be any good though. After all, this is the first time I enter this sort of contest and I don't think I've got a good grasp at palettes like these yet. But I've still tried. The palette is untested too, but I want to test it out as soon as I can. Please do provide some good pointers, if possible.
I did a bit of "mixing" prior to putting the colors into the template so I'd have an easier time picking the (hopefully) right colors, and as such I have my palette in another form.

Hello! I've decided to give it a try:

Can anyone comment on my palette? I'm a little bit lost ( -`_΄- )

upd: it's not a final one!

Well, this is what I came up so far

I will try to tweak it some more before submitting it on the template. Any critic is appreciated.

Posted By: Meapers
Date Posted: 23 April 2015 at 1:38pm

i did the thing.
Anyway, still have to change some colors and toy around with it. Any critique would be fine.
EDIT 2

EDIT 3

Pretty much done for the most part. I will probably do some testing with pallet.

Trying to do very desaturated palette. It's raw, I know there are many issues and few very similar to each other colors, but I'm too sleepy now.
Not an entry yet, will update later.

Posted By: SpeedyCube
Date Posted: 23 April 2015 at 6:02pm
ooooh, I'm really digging that palette, Finlal

Posted By: PixelSnader
Date Posted: 23 April 2015 at 6:08pm
I've built a universal palette and been using it for quite a while now (with some tweaking in between), for example in a couple of the @Pixel_Dailies challenges.

Here were my requirements:

  • Should incorporate 5 logo colors; red orange green blue and purple. May be tweaked a pinch (because the project isn't set in stone yet) but not much.

  • At least 4 greys (I ended up using 5 for a better spread) for regular interface colors

  • A selection of properly bright colors for the interface and other non-game use. (think pie-charts etc.)

  • A 'wide' variety of skin tones because humans are a big subject in human media and art, and I'd like diversity to be an option.

  • Have simple but pleasant color ramps for trees/water/fire and such to avoid single-color programmer art, as well as avoid neonized art like the EGA or ZX-Spectrum. Having enough grays here will help too.

In short, a very multifunctional palette for a console or PC, with two quirks (logocolors and skintones) that should allow even novice artists and newcomers to the 'platform' to create decent graphics.

Anyway, this is the current latest incarnation:

Yes, there's 000000 black in there. And FFFFFF white. Not using them is wasting the width your console/PC can output. If the user doesn't like it, they can easily tweak their contrast/brightness.

A trick for checking your palette's versatility is to recolour other people's work:

Hm, it seems my PC's security won't allow me to install Grafx2. You get it from http://pulkomandy.tk/projects/GrafX2/downloads - here , right?

Anyway, I did another palette. These are fun to make.

Posted By: DawnBringer
Date Posted: 24 April 2015 at 2:13am
@Drazile: Yeah. Is there a problem with the download? If so you can try getting it http://code.google.com/p/grafx2/downloads/list?can=2&q=label%3AOpSys-Windows+label%3ARelease-2.4 - Here from the old Google site:
I think it's just a zip-file that needs unpacking. I'd recommend you get the V2.4.2035 as the latest version 2082 has not been stable for me.

@PixelSnader: There's 55 colors in that image... :/

Posted By: andrae

some blues and oranges

Posted By: Manupix
Date Posted: 24 April 2015 at 2:54am
@atp: looks nice, maybe missing a brighter tone? You prob know what you're doing though, just ignore me ;)

@eggy: good start, needs tweaks.
You have 3 groups of very similar colors in there that should be spread out, in hue and saturation.
3 greens: hue = 122/123;
3 reds: hue = 0/4 (that's pure red or close btw), 2 of them with the same sat;
4 blues: hue = 274/276/277, close sats by pairs, also the 2 purples hues are close to these, 270/267.
Probably missing orange.

@yall's: avoid colored backgrounds, they mess with color perception!
Eggy's 4th color looks blue on the yellow bg (it is), yet with a sat of only 4, it's almost grey and looks like it on a neutral bg.

btw @andrea nice greens and blues : D

Posted By: Drazile
Date Posted: 24 April 2015 at 4:15am
Shouldn't making the background colour one of the palette colours help with judging the colours? It doesn't matter how saturated the blue is, what matters is how it looks when with other colours of that palette.

Posted By: jalonso
Date Posted: 24 April 2015 at 6:04am
There is no reason to leave the template with a pure white BG cept that it makes it easier on the users later on to see colors accurately and make sure their monitor is looking right.
In judging it should not matter :/

---
@All, some are including charts and even examples showing their colors at work.
This is nice but is not required if you choose to enter.

Those hex codes are really hard to read... erase the gray where it doesn't serve as aa?

Intuitively refined it..
"CRAYOLO"

I ran some of Dawnbringer's scripts on it (oddly there's a grey appearing in the diagrams).

You got the 3-4 interface colors in there too. If you want to make sure only palette colors are present; copy your darkest color to all other palette slots (copy to #16 and #255 and spread)

First one I've made for a challenge
{IMG]http://i.imgur.com/nQnWm82.png[/IMG]
Last one isn't white, it's E2E2D8
Haven't put hex's on all of them yet
It's also not final at all
Did a recolor

Mine is the darker one (on the right)
Kinda a darker palette, a little hard to bend into a lighter image
*EDIT*
New version of palette

New recolor

Fixes the awkward lack of tree brown
Oh, and the original is by a3um, sorry about no credits earlier

• Because not everyone has your fancy setup and need to manually enter the colors on their old-timey software.

• Because it makes the collab easier to manage.

• Because colors are weird and not everyone has the same calibration and some see colors differently.

• Because you could just be making the nextanother DB16 and the future demands accuracy.

• Because when the aliens finally land they will understand.

@Peyton
The palette is a bit too saturated for my tastes.

Posted By: Peyton

That was kind of the goal :p

I have really been liking super saturated colors lately, so I guess that was reflected in the palette. It probably won't win because of that, but whatever :p

We don't need no saturation.

UPD. Hexes, dammit.

Just asking, why do we need hex codes?

You're entering a contest; you need to know what you're doing.

Figured I'd give it a try. This palette's mostly blue-and-purple focused, and I tried to make it so the other colours wouldn't clash with that.

Peyton, the brightest yellow and green are really close, sort of hard to tell the two apart. That could just be me though, you know way more about colors than I do

Ah okay, thanks Jal

• Because it makes the collab easier to manage.

When is the next collab?

After the palette comp ends and the judging and awards happen then we open the collab which will feature the winning palette.
Note that we sometimes use palettes from this comp for weekly challenges too because some entires will be great but not suited for the collab theme.

I think here is a final palette.

Also I made another one that is inspired by a movie... I just couldn't resist the inspiration lol

I really liked entering this contest. It was a really great experience for me!
Want to see the complete list of all palettes. Can't wait!

First attempt at something like this haha

And a demonstration thing:

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Edit: Desatured the cyan a bit

@PaperClip
Your cyan (00F37E) is more saturated than the other lighter colors which are all less saturated than their darker counterparts. It is more saturated than its darker variant.
Also, pick fewer colors and do three for each, instead of two, but that is just preference. But it does allow for easier shading.

'We don't need no saturation' is gonna be in my head all day :p I like the palette too.

Dawnbringer: I didn't have time until now to try and fix that. I spread the darkest color as suggested but it still shows those extra colors! You can see that the darkest color is spread here; so I wonder why i can't get it to work:

There it is in Grafx2 and there's the palette index window from photoshop as well (to show the palette a little larger)

'Crayolo'

there's the 16 color version without the white border and with the darkest color spread to the last slot:

You're not displaying the entire 256 color palette...the auto-interface colors are placed last. (You can even see them in the analysis-image palette).

Ah, I do see them in the analysis image; sadly I'm off to work now but will take another look into it when I return. Thanks for helping Dawnbringer.

In the mean time I did put this together manually for testing purposes:

I think a couple of the colors will need adjustment seeing them combined..
the darker violet and the medium clay color particularly.

Anyone with grafx2 want to give me a hand?
The newest version of grafx2 for mac doesn't run at all. I had a version that worked, but not after updating. Found outdated (3yrs) instruction on how to compile. Didn't work. Go figure.
So, anyone either have a copy for mac that actually runs? Or would anyone be willing to take my latest iteration of my palette and do what everyone else has done with that analysis image?
*EDIT* Ugh, numbering takes longer than the palette.

Updated Crayolo:

fixed the color charts

Ooh just in time to update without having to post.
Leaving intuitive phase behind and moving onto the phase of hands on tinkering:
Another update (hope I'm not getting too carried away with posting):

I'm certain to have one more update soon so I wont bother to post the hex values this time for now.

@Finlal
It crashes upon launch for me, do you have an older version. Neither google code's or pulkomandy's version works.
*EDIT*
I wonder if for whatever reason, Yosemite isn't supported...
What version of os x do you use Finlal?

@Alex, I have yosemite 10.10.3. It worked on 10.10.1 as well. Not sure if it is an older version, I downloaded it about 1,5 weeks ago.
@Lijj, love your palette too and those dither things.

Good! (although you do have the background black in there now, but it's ok as long as you're aware) Btw. when rendering the polar diagrams; max out the bri/hue settings for better quality.

For the palette, you may wanna rethink the medium yellow which is very close to the red & green. Since you also have a huge brightness-gap to white...one option would be to make the two brightest yellows even brighter

Hmm, I have 10.10.3 too. What version is your grafx2? Is it 2.2.2?

No, it's 2.4.

@Finlal
On the downloads page, it says 2.4
But after downloading, unarchiving, and not opening, according to os x, it is version 2.2.2
Is there an old downloads page? I wasn't able to find one.

Aaagh! just realized the program I've been using lately (PyxelEdit) has HSV instead of HSL -> 56 54 80 in HSV is 56 21 90 in HSL.
Unfortunately no setting for it.

Hello!

This one is my post entry.
Well, my palette isn't very good to draw anything, because it is for making
anime illustrations, I have been working on it the last month, specially the skin colors.

So, there are many samples I did for the x16 palette.
Each one has a different skin shades.
You can depict a highlight ambientace or a dungeon shades maybe.
note: fan arts.

This one explains the skin color working for AA and a dith preview.
You can see the % porcentual using for each skin color, so the darkest
colors are for the most part of the AA, there are special colors for AA use.

Hope you like it.

Palette 3 - Lighter, brighter, and with more colors.
Maybe the best one I've created yet

I didn't notice the way that blue looks against the new updated lighter yellow 'til I looked at it now in the script generated chart, so that'll probably be changed.
Thanks for the advice Dawnbringer; I think it's more versatile now.

Do our palettes have to be for general use or can we make them a specific theme?
