I plan to make a horizontal shmup type of game for this challenge.

I just created this without any image references, so I may or may not use this for the final piece.

@Jackster, auto dithered reductions like that are frowned upon in PJ even tho this type of thing is common in the real world and does not make it NPA its just not pure.

dare I call this a perfect challenge?

Jackster, how did you do that? it looks awesome!

jalonso, be easier on the guy, this kind of nit-picking can destroy a sudden creative burst very quickly. the picture looks gorgeous and does not break the rules, so what does it matter how it was achieved?

@Volrak_Sutra, The picture does look gorgeous. We don't go by visuals, we go by pixel level technical.

It matters a lot how pixelart is achieved because process is an important aspect in pixelart not just end result for the purposes of the PJ gallery.

I was not nitpicking or bursting a creative bubble. In fact I was trying to prevent spending time on a challenge that would not be accepted on technical grounds.

What is an auto-dithered reduction? It just looks like he used one of the dithered brushes in GG.

Does an outer space level strictly means a scene at the cold interstellar void or it can be inside a spaceship or something?

I think it's outer space as long as you're not on a planet.

Some apps can take a photo or rough drawing and generate it as a dithered piece which is 'pixelart' and has the type of look the pixel above shows. This is cool and sometimes done on commercial game projects and can be a time saver and nothing is 'wrong' with that. However, for the purposes of the PJ gallery which is a showcase of the pixelart medium then they are not added because the creator has not controlled the pixels on the pixel level in the way we all have come to accept as being 'pure'. Any tool usage which includes brushes also fall under this.
As we see it around here any pixelart should have every pixels within it under the control of the artist. Using the bucket/fill is 'controlled' pixel placement.

Totally realistic space depiction:

this background is going to be annoying, I could do with some better dither brushes.

Thanks for the critique, Jal. I'll remember next time to do less cheap pixeling and more of actually pixeling. I'll have to rework my background though.

In the meantime, here's a WIP on the sprites:

Done using GraphicsGale and ProMotion simultaneously. The truck took too long to do, so I don't know if I'll finish this on time or not.
