Hi everyone,

I've kind of been into drawing buildings this time, and I tried to make an haussmannian building (my http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/101481.htm - previous building ).

It feels great to me, I like my shapes and colors, but it feels quite empty. Especially the middle level.

It's a feature of hausmanniann buildings to be quite uniform, but I'd like to add some exciting details to make it more lively.

My previous building felt less empty because it was not as much based on reality as this one.

What would you add ?

I'm interested in any other constructive criticism :)

Maybe one or more of the tenants have some balcony flowers hanging on the railing.

I quite like the building itself, but I'm not a huge fan of the clouds, I think they command a lot of attention.

Try it with a neutral grey overcast background, and put it between two similar buildings. You may find it looks wonderful.

I quite like it, by the way.

I really like it as it is but the clouds really need to be remade so that they are not as prominent as already mentioned. One/two colors is probably fine.

I don't think this pixel need to be pre-scaled at all. 1X would add charm to it, imo.

The simplest way to add something to break things up is to add a car that's equally cute and in a color that helps everything tie up. Here an orange car where you can use the existing red to help shade it.
If adding a car I would move the stop sign to the left and place the car on the right cropped so the back of the car is not seen to help the layout.

I'll try adding some flowers, but I'm not sure it's going to blend well with the feeling of the building. I'll post and edited version so you can tell me what you think about it.

Adding a car is a great idea, I'll try that tonight :)

Thanks.

EDIT:Here's the edited version

I'm not quite satisfied with this car's design. It feels too curvy compared to the rectangular shapes of the buildings. I'm not sur it fits the style of the rest of the piece.

Do you think I should keep a side-view or maybe make the road 3/4 perspective so the car is not floating on the sidewalk like it is right now ?

I rather like the contrast of the rounded car. In fact, I'd push it more and make it like a Bug.

Although, if you want to keep it more angular, you might want to elongate the the hood and flatten the top.

I'd like to see the clouds a bit more rectangular too, or at least stretched out. I'm not a fan of how cartoony/flat they feel compared to how detailed the building is.

Speaking of detail, I think just one good fern/plant on one of the balconies would be enough. Or more cats. More cats would make everything better every time. Like infinity cats.

Oh look the weather is changing

Park the car on the other side of the street before the police drives by and gives you a ticket

@kitsieandmeow: I really like how you see life. Cats are awesome and I always try to add at least one in a piece :) I added one, just for you ;)

@jalonso: I did change the weather a bit, big clouds and less saturated background (inspired by http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/94916.htm - this piece of DatMuffinMan )

Here is the new version, with the new car and the old one. Which one looks the best in your opinion ?

Thanks for your time :)

The new clouds are much better and makes the scene more interesting. Nice job on that

The car looks nice facing forward but now everything faces forward. Both look ok really.

The thing that sticks out to me is the scale of the car, stop sign to building.
If a person is roughly the height of the doors on floors 2,3 and 4 then the stop sign is too short.
A person of that height would not fit in the car.
If a person driving the car saw that stop sign it would block all sight because its so big.
Maybe both the car and the sign need to be scaled in better.

EDIT: Thanks for the clouds :)

I tried to quickly represent the size of a person relatively to the doors, and it seems like it would perfectly fit in the car. I guess it's not the biggest car in the world but I've been into worse :p Does it still seem too small to you ?

The stop sign is really too short though. He'd bang his head in it.

Oh yeah the scale is better than it looked to be...nvm :)

The new clouds are lovely. I feel like the car could do with a bit more saturation to go with the sky, but I'm not sure.

Updated the post sign height, and added some grass on certain windows. It does feel more lively.

@MrHai: You were right for the clouds (and the flowers on the balcony). They were too distracting, while these ones are more realistic and blend way better with rest of the piece.

@Jalonso: You were still right concerning the stop sign :)

Its looking very nice.
You are going great.
Please clean the clouds because everything here
Is based on extra clean pixelwork so rough, dirty and
messy anything hurts everything.
This is best seen on the top edge where the white meets the darkest blue on the right side.

I'm not sure I understand which parts of the clouds are messing with the rest. Do you mean the whitest color of the clouds is messing with the dark blue of the building balcony ?

I am unable to make a visual now.

I mean 'on the pixel level' messiness.

Ok, think I found out what you were talking about. I made the clouds quite fast and didn't really clean up my shapes.

Here's the cleaned up version. I might have smoothed it too much though.
