Had a real productive day \o/
This is the next BG. This time I'm making the yellow one (that's the theme for these BGs.)  Its a factory setting like in Detroit where the architecture is very fancy yet its a factory. I was inspired by the Pink Floyd Animals cover art.

This is my first draft so the sky is still a mess. I think this needs some secondary pink lighting to emphasize the smokestacks? I'll experiment. c+c very welcome.

Wow ... that's amazing. It's hardly just a draft jalonso ...

I really love this industrial atmosphere ! This remembers me back in the 90' when the bitmap brothers ruled ... they could create this kind of detailed backgrounds.

If you're looking for ideas to complete your 'draft' (as you call it ), you should put two or three streetlights ... as the air is obviously over saturated, there are no sunlights.

I didn't mean to come across so pretentious. I call it a first draft because its the first attempt at this BG and judging by my other works, I end up changing most of it. The streetlights are a great idea and will add some. Maybe I can get some pink lighting from that.

for one frame, one of your smoke trails goes from yellow to purple

you need to gradually fade the grey smoke to yellow, depthwise

Fantastic start jalonso, i almost choked on my food when i saw it. That's a good thing. For some reason. The details on the buildings and the colour choices are brilliant.

Okay so, crits...
Umm, you've got some highlights and shadow colours right next to each other in the lighter portion of the sky, which makes it lose the soft cloudy texture it should have. Not much else from me really, keep going's all i say.

Excellent work so far. :) I'd suggest adding some purple to the clouds maybe? To give it a severely polluted look. :P

@snader, good call on the smoke. I need to find some references. I'm not as good as I thought, with smoke. Anyone have a reference or tut for me?

@Lar, yes, the clouds will need lots of clean-up. The sky will be done using parralex so I have to study how to break it up before pixel pushing it. I did rework the area you mentioned with this update.
@Aleiav, as I mentioned these BGs all have a monochromatic scheme. I am not able to add colors that are not yellows. I already made a purple BG too.

added some lights to introduce the pinks I feel are needed to balance all the yellows?

EDIT: ensellitis gave me http://www.vce.com/pyro2.html - this link , thought I'd share with all :D

Doh. :P aaah okie doke. I originally felt like the pallate was too yellow, but the lights counter balance it well. :) Nice work!

i think the sky would look nicer in pink/lilac. I am also not fond of that
blue maybe more green hues, to give a rusty copper sorta feel?

The overal pixelling is nice, but it might look better with different
colours.

I came up with some smoke I think looks pretty good? Other tweaks here and there. I'm dividing the clouds into 4 layers so updates aren't to exciting at the moment.

@Shark, I'm bound to yellows now.

I think the smoke should be grey even though there is yellow in the sky.

I love the buildings on the right

This is such a treat for the eyes. To me, the palette is perfect.

It's quite simple how you animated the smoke, yet it works pretty well.

Trying to look for crits really... perhaps the building on the right is a tad less detailed/contrasted than the one on the left? I don't think it really matters though.

And c'mon, you've gotta have 1 flickering light.... lol, it's the law.

thx lar. The smoke seems off with more obvious blowing (I studied your puffy fish for this) I will add a new brown to emphasise some contrast. I had noticed this but did not want to add a color unless mentioned. Now it has been so I will add. I will obey the law and flicke a light. Should it be the pink lower one or a yellow one?

ah art is great , i just think pallet should be a bit less saturated , since all the smoke should make things grey and such

the smoke is perfect btw

I know! Leafs shouldn't make shadow...

onoes! you misunderstood me

what you did was make every cloud striped yellow and grey

what i meant wa's, the further away the clouds are, the more yellow( higher saturation) they become.

I'm very confused by that:/ If the fartherst clouds the smallest ones are all yellow in more saturated tones (understands lighter too) they won't show because when the layers move using parrallex effects then they will at times be over areas that are different color yellows. For this reason I went ith a brown yellow for all the smokes, so that they always show well. The striped movement is just there for now, this will be fine tuned.

I hit a creative block on this piece over the smokestacks. I will proceed with all yellow smokestacks/clouds because like the other BGs for this game any level beyond the playing layer is monochromatic. Even if it means less happy viewers. I now suppose these are things I should have forseen when making the original blue one with the buildings. Lesson learned

I have in this update unified all the yellows and added more lighting. I have also added, Shark's suggestion (thx) of adding green to the metal in the playing layer. I also tried rust and copper but it looked messy so I left the oxydized green by itself.

@Lar, with 16 layers, I am unable to add 4 more for the flickering light

The cloud animation still leaves a lot to be desired, HELP!

EDIT:typos

This bg is for a game right? it will look a lot better if the smokes were programmed...

ex: u make an animation of a round cloud dissipating, and then it comes out of the factory w/ a transparency and w/ a certain random direction, then when a smoke overlaps annother the transparency will make a great effect... u can make more than one cloud to make it look more randomly

@ BlackFang - the smoke will be programmed in the game itself. I make the animations for the PJ gallery because without them any comment would mention that I forgot the smoke or that it should be animated  (think Sab)

This is now complete for me and I have posted into the http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/13147.htm - gallery .
THX ALL!
