Hey guys. Firstly Hello! I'm Daniel, a designer/illustrator from London. I've just started playing with pixel art for the first time as myself and a friend work on our first game.
I submitted one of my game mockups to the gallery but unfortunately it's not got through. I've had a read through 'Pixel art submission and rejection' but would like to better understand the nuances of what is and what is not desired on the pixeljoint gallery.
If there are any guides or points I've missed, apologies in advance!

Good pixel art for a beginner, but I guess they rejected it because you used alpha channel overlays for effects, like these rings around power-ups and shadows. These are desirable for actual games, but PJ mods are very picky pixel-nazis at that :-(

Regarding the art itself, my only complaint is that these big ship's hulls have noticeable pixel banding (google it).

Thanks
Yeah that's all fine by me. I don't mind restrictions - I did a http://pixeljoint.com/pixelart/116483.htm - PICO-8 version of the same game - I'm just intrigued where some of the restrictions come from, wether it's a stylistic leaning from pixel joint, or a puritan thing from old gaming or enforcing the time/craft in producing pixel art, or simply keeping colour count to certain number.
Anyhow! hope to share more soon! :-)

As far as I can tell, these restrictions came from the rejection of places where a lot of crap gets submitted (deviantart) and labeled pixel art, which frustrated a lot of artists. The line had to be drawn somewhere, and it is easier to enforce a strict rule than to endlessly discuss subjective ones.
However, discussion does continue, both internally and by the community, as the guidelines do not always reflect our gut feelings or the needs of a pixel art gallery in this day and age. Things will hopefully change over time, but progress depends on factors many of which are hidden to most, and is slow.
I do love the look of this stuff, and it is fun to know I am not the only Daniel living in London ;)

Yep! It's our first game, building in Gamemaker Studio :-). We're only able to work on it a few hours here and there but hoping to have a demo put together before the end of the year.

Hey guys, little update on the game I've been working on. ( some of you guys really helped me out in getting the design of the boss right so thanks! )
We've been making good progress on our game and have opened a BETA signup list for anyone who wants to test out the game when it's ready. We'll be testing on both iOS and Android so should have most people covered.
If you'd like to get on the list, just head to our site: http://www.skiesofchaosgame.com/ - http://www.skiesofchaosgame.com/
Below are a few updated screens too! As always, you can follow progress on insta and twitter too: @skiesofchaos
Apologies the images aren't the exact pixel images, had to grab these quick. You can see better quality on the socials.
