Hi guys, new to pixel art and am trying to learn how to do tile sheets. I am working on a small pixel game with some friends.

Backgrounds and color have never been my strong suits, so I'm having a lot of trouble with this part. Any input on my color choices would be really, really appreciated.

I chose a blue tone for the rocks, and am thus a bit confused about how to go about the back tiles. I know that complimentary colors would look dark, but I also know that a complimentary color would be orange and warm colors tend to look closer (or am I getting that wrong?)

(Not super relevant, but I was also told by the programmer that individual tiles would be better than a canvas/painting sort of thing, since the game will be a random generated thing.)

Apologies if this is a horribly-worded first post, thanks for reading!

Sorry, I'm using the image tags but it doesn't look like it's showing up in preview. Hopefully it is showing for you guys.

Make sure you use the URL of the image (https://i.imgur.com/Fk628Ke.png) rather than the URL of the webpage it's on.

It's difficult to give feedback on tiles in isolation, without knowing what colour the background will be, what the sprites will look like, etc. I recommend making a mockup instead of just isolated tilesets, and then split the mockup into tilesets when you're done. You might find you won't need the outlines, or that you need to use different colours to make things look good, or perhaps what you have now will work perfectly.

Oh that makes SO much sense!

Thanks so much. I'll make sure to upload a mockup with some more information. Still trying to figure out what colors would go well with these blue rocks, for the parts behind it. So I'll get it up once I get that going.

Thanks very much for your comment, you give so much good feedback on here! Just joined PJ but I noticed you in a lot of critique threads. So thanks, that's really awesome of you to help people like that.

I was taught that it was light colors that look close, rather than, as you mentioned, warm colors.

Also, you do get something like a cold dark orange.  I would normally call it a greenish brown.

Other ways to make things look "backgroundy" is to reduce the detail, reduce the contrast, or reduce the saturation.
