I'm brand new here and mostly new to pixel art, haven't done any in years, and my total amount is probably 3. I'm looking for some critique on this banner I'm making for someone:

I'm having the most trouble with dithering the sky "gradient" background and making it look decent. It always seems too dithered or not dithered enough and I'm not sure what to do, so any tips would be much appreciated!

Here's another type of dither I tried:

Any other tips are more than welcome, the sky bit is just what's bothering me most.

Have you tried using something other than horizontal bands for the sky? Arcs, or vague cloud shapes? In my own experience, it's easier to make those organic, non-straight boundaries look nice, as there are no clear linear features for viewers to pick up on.

Thank you so much for your fast response! I have not tried more organic shapes, but it's a very good suggestion! I will try that, but in the meantime (because I have a hand injury that means I have to rest a lot, so I might not try it until tomorrow), here's the other thing I was trying, spacing out the lines more irregularly:

I think it wouldn't be as bad looking in general to have such straight lines if it weren't a banner (so if it weren't so long)

I think you were onto something with your second try. Might try a condensed dithering between the color bands. Go purple, medium purple, light purple, and pink. Find room for wider solid bands of color to give it more vibrancy.

Your third attempt looks great, but it's because you maintained a consistent style. Either use dithering in the image or not. Mixing it with other pixel art styles will make it look strange.

Good job!

the dithering in the second version seems better

those straight lines remind me to speed lines.
it looks like someone taking a nap on a cloud.
lines who remind me to speed lines wont fit
