I've been playing a little today. Any thoughts on how to improve?

Inspired a bit by 2b from Nier Automata.

I like the art style from the neck down, but the cartoonish look of the face looks a little out of place. But I could see this character either being a Castlevania-esque character or in a fighting game. Great job!

Just messin around.  The db16 is a great palette.
Aside from anatomy issues, you have a lot of colors that blend with similar shades which don't read well.  Define your shapes with as few colors as possible.  Less is more.  Every pixel counts.

Some other tips:
-Think in terms of pixel clusters.
-Try to avoid single pixels unless it serves a purpose.
-Keep the light source consistent. (2 light sources can be tricky as you have here)

A good place to start a study is comparing the light ball.  Notice the clusters.
My edit is still a little on the sloppy side, but you get the idea.
