Heyup, I've been having a go at sticking together some low resolution RPG mockups. At present this is the second one that's been knocked together but I just don't feel like it's quite there and wondered if anyone might fancy casting their eye(s) over it:

From what I can see so far it doesn't read 'terribly', but the Trees definitely look more like Brussel Sprouts. I'm digging the wall area at the bottom-left, and frankly the character could do with a bit of an overhaul.

I guess just any thoughts on general improvements would be a massive help to kick this thing in the right direction. To make it a little less vague my main targets are to:
- Just in general make it look prettier and more polished yet retaining a limited amount of pixels
- Place things with a bit better composition, however this might be a bit tough as I'm aiming to make it a larger level
- Any pointers on quality of edges / palettes that you might think would make it looks less bland

Thanks everyone, hopefully I didn't ask too many questions especially since it's early days. have a good night!

My only issue with the trees is with the visual disconnect of the shading. The shadows at the base of the trees read as if the sun is directly overhead (and the leaves are transparent), but the leaves read as if the sun is shining on them from the left. Figure out exactly where you want the light source to be, then adjust both the shadows and the leaf shading accordingly.

Everything else looks okay to me.

Oh gahd that's an excellent point, I'll have a look at that. Thanks very much!

The wall looks more like a brick path to me. I think it might be because of the lighting, maybe there should be less highlights on the lower two brick levels.

Yeah totally agree with you there, if the bricks are that far down it's hardly likely the sunlight's going to reach them. Even those further up now that you mention it.

Moar lighting research is required for sure!
