a newer, better, faster, and even prettier version of PixelJoint is upon us. we have the technology.
this topic is dedicated to the new version.
first of all, let me explain what will be happening:
i will be redesigning all of the PJ pages. they will be going all standard compliant, with WAP enabled. the ability to customize it will be expanded, making almost every aspect of the look and feel left to your imagination.
here is where you come in... we want to know what YOU want. what would you like to see on the front page, what would make your PJ experience more enjoyable?
consider this a focus group. suggest ideas and discuss ideas people have offered.
Here are suggestions recieved so far:
- Better control over fonts
- Something for featured artists
- Russian language/more language support
- Ability to add/remove content on frontpage
feel free to offer your opinions on those, and be sure to suggest your own

It would be handy if there was a way to enlarge all text with a single button. I tend to look at PJ before going to bed (2:27 AM atm) and things get woozy then. This would also help any people with eyeproblems and/or dyselexia.

How about no character limit on comments? I guess debates aren't really to be had in the news area but... still. Text limits are aggravating when you want to say a lot.

Aleiav, i'm afraid there has to be a limit for comments to avoid serious spamming. Not sure what the limit is at the moment but it might be haggleable i suppose.
Can't think of anything i'd like to see added atm, but i'm sure i'll think of something soon. Or i might not. =D

More featured pixel artists! Hah. I guess that's not a v3 thing but we need more.

Instead of having to find the news article, it'd be nice for there to be a link to last month's top ten pixel pieces on the front page. That is, unless I'm missing something...

Just an idea. Maybe there is a way to link a partcular piece to its WIP
thread when applicable? Say in the art submission page right below the PJ rules* a check box to indicate that it had a development thread and somehow creates a link to it.
*Wish List - A hand that pops out of the
screen and slaps the artist who violates rule #6 then lists them on the
front page in the "shame" section

@PixelBlink: I know about the option but it doesn't work on any site but Google. I think it has to do with HTML tags (<Paragraph>?) @Demon: I just had a PM from Larwick who also sent me the CTRL-Scroll thingy, but it only enlargens the •'s on the right frame. @Wannahlakujuu: Exactly, my nephew adores this site for the 'pretty pictures' (Mostly Medieval related) but whenever I try and get him to sign up and join the community he says: "It's hard for me to read". I've also got 3 friends in class who're slightly dyslexic and they've got the same problems. I'm sure they aren't the only ones on the globe ;)

According to the font size suggestion, to make this relative to the user's preferences (font size option, Ctrl+Wheel, etc. ), you'll have to change all absolute text size in the css file : http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/css_styles/default_style.css - http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/css_styles/default_style.css :
...
/* Text */
.smText {font-size: 10px;}
.lgText {font-size: 15px;}
.heading {font-size: 19px;}
... this should be expressed in % or with keyword (normal/large/small/x-large/xx-large/ ...)

Going along with jalonsos suggestion, howabout having some more areas you could fill out when needed for when you're submitting a piece? For example, "WIP thread/image:" and "#ofFrames:" could be useful.

@panda, that has been there foir awhile XD @maloart, that css file is not going to be used. everything is going to be redone.
my idea so far is a ajax based design. ajax would allow you to add and remove sections that you want, dont want, and also reorganize to your taste. along with a way to customize the colors/sizes without having to submit your css, but do it in real time.

@ensellitis : Well, I just pointed out why people could not resize their font while browsing PJ's ... Planning to use Ajax framework is definetly a good idea, technically speaking.
The Larwick suggestion is good. You should add new attributes to submitted pixels like UrlToThread (allowing to link the forum directly but also other forums like Pixelopolis), UrlToRef (allowing to link every referenced pictures).
Could we have some personal statistics like 'How many new pictures have been submited since my last visit ?', 'How many people rated (not showing the values of course) for my pixel ?' ...
|
Posted By: alkaline
Date Posted: 11 August 2006 at 11:01am
what if.....you can't rate art until you click the preview to view full image? it may be a little inconvenient, but who knows how many people rate based on the preview image. it isn't exactly essential or convenient but it may throw off ratings.. opinions? i'm not sure if many people would like that though
-------------

I agree with alkie.
What about adding some function to the news submissions where one can add images and format the news post to their liking? I'd like to see that.

|

yeah, people rate the previews to get the highest # of ratings..
|
Posted By: Dejital

How about more "new" pixels on the front page, like on PJv1. Cause now most people will click more on the high rated pixels and only the 3 newest.

Here's an idea for the v3 programming nerds;
Is it possible to include an "@" alert tab in the comments. Say you
look at a piece and make a comment with a question for the artist or
your comment includes something that sparks a debate of some kind.
Unless an answer is directly above yours you have no way of knowing
something needs a further reply from you or a need to manually check
the piece again. This happens to me often and often feel like an idiot
for not noticing till its too late. Maybe any piece that mentions you
by name could be an alert or even better a check box that you choose to
follow then alerts you of new comments on that particular piece that is
not yours?

How about a comment system like Youtubes, where you can post comments, and you can also post a reply to a comment which will send an alert to the person who you are replying to.

You have a PM inbox at the gallery and one at the forum. Currently, they are totally independent of each other, and work very differently. My suggesstion was to replace them with a unified PM inbox that recieves messages sent on the forum or the main site without distinction between the two.

I agree about everything but pixel fonts. While they're shecksy, they're a pain in the ass to read, especially if you have paragraphs of text.
Keep the regular text something normal, but use pixel fonts for buttons, etc.

I like this idea very much with a twist. I now use the buddy list to
keep tabs on certain people, but others add me and now my buddy list is
a big mess. (No I can't kick people off my list, they have their
reasons for wanting to be there). Actually a better approach is have a
new tab called something like "lookouts". Its less elitist. This type
of list could also be for those whom progress you follow out of
interest or curiosity but are not neccessarily a favorite of yours.
Someone working on a multipiece project, or even someone you mentor. An
exclusive "fav artist" thing is not inclusive or proper, imho.

I'm just going to go ahead and respond to all the suggestions I've seen so far...
@Panda: I know the "Adjust Text" is not obvious which is part of the problem.
@Aleiav: We can increase comment length, but we will need a cap of some kind (sorry, I've been lazy about fixing this).
@Brian the Great: Lenin will definitely be a fixture of PJ in v3.
@Dejital: Last time I checked the Google translator Russian wasn't an option (maybe I missed it?)
@jalonso/MaloART: WIP link is a great idea for the PJ gallery (I'll leave it generic so people can post any forum's link).
@halfDemon: I will make a permalink somewhere with every "top list" including the top 100 pixel art for each year (no awards for that yet).
@Ensellitis: We need somebody dedicated to the Featured Artist thing... it's actually a lot of work to conduct interviews. I have one with ptoing that's almost ready.
@Larwick: I will add "Number of Frames" to pixel art.
@MaloART: Storing ref links in a field could be a good idea, but I want to make sure it looks decent on the frontend (what if someone has a dozen ref links?)
@MaloART: Number of ratings per piece is a good idea to show.
@alkaline/PB/leel: Ratings not showing up in "preview" is something I'm very torn about. I like the convenience of it, but I understand people might not be checking previews before scoring. Tough one.
@Dejital: Maybe we could expand the design horizontally so we don't have to sacrifice vertical space. I like news showing "above the fold".
@pixelblink/Ensellitis: Ensellitis and I will need to talk about how we are going to handle posting images in news/embedded video links in news posts, but that is one of the primary upgrades I want to get to.
@jalonso/Dejital: As for the reply to a comment thing... that is something I've been meaning to do for a looooong time (since I initially put the comment system in). It will come.
@Monkey 'o Doom: Forum integration stuff will most likely be the last thing we get to because I want PJ gallery site to be tightened up before moving onto forum. Sorry. :P
@Akira: Alerting via PM for favorite/lookout artists new pieces is a good idea. Alerting via email is not going to happen just because I don't want to burden the email server with that.
@jalonso/larwick/Everyone: There's no doubt we need to get a favorite artist system working smoothly at PJ. Jalonso's idea for "lookouts" is a much better phrasing, but is that clear enough?
Whew. If I missed anyone's suggestions/requests just post it again and I'll keep adding to the list.

Sounds good.. I know a few times when I wish I could have edited something I just typed incorrectly.

I would be good if you had a 5 minute limit for editing, just so people can correct mistakes. Otherwise it could get complicated, perhaps even having 'edited by X at XX:XX XX/XX/XXXX' on it, which just wouldn't work on such small areas for commenting.

Or maybe a 'preview post' instead. Not sure which of the two would be more convenient to use and easier to code for Sedge.

Well, I don't know if this sticky is by the time off ...
I have another suggestion.
Well, in fact, it's not very new but I like the idea to have a global vote every 6 months (but it could be more or less of course) in a dozen of categories (animation, scene, realism, iso, etc...). 15 days before the votes, everyone may submit one pixel per category that was posted since the last competition. etc...
In fact this could be done without a specific interface and directly on the forum, but this would be nice to have a special module dedicated to the competition.
Another suggestion would be to have a daily trace of what happened on the IRC channel (in fact something liek the chatterbox). Some members (like myself) are behind a corporate firewall that denies IRC ports and proxies.

while this may seem like a good idea, it would have to be on a seperate page and not easily viewable. our conversations can get very animated... ltonight for example... we talked about womens rights, gender roles, morals in media, which all somehoe led to the facts and fictions of anal intercourse and proper lubrication... XD it has been worse at times as well, plus, the official bot (Pikachu) has uno, and that itself can add up to several hundred messages. a good idea to consider though... maybe i can get the bot to log conversations and ftp them to the server, and have some kind of script format it...

I don't know if this has been suggested or it's already something that's been set to happen... but how about a way to make an avatar from even a large pixel art, but you can move the 64x64 square over the area desired for the avatar? I hope that made sense.

I second this radical notion. well, one way to do this (if its your art) is to make a tumbnail of the piece at 64x64, then you can use it as an avatar :D ------------- ಠ_ಠ

Heya! Long-time lurker of the site and pixel art fan from the apple ][ days here. Just two suggestions, if I might (don't know how possible they would be): 1. The ability to scroll around an enlarged piece of pixel art. Oftentimes when I enlarge a piece past the original size, on larger pieces the entire right side is cut off. It'd be cool to be able to scroll over to the right side when the piece is cut off. Again, don't know how much of a pain in the arse that would be. 2. (and more of a blue sky type o' thing): The ability to step through animations in the pixel art window. IOW, buttons to step from one frame of an animated gif to the next. Don't know if one can meddle inside a gif like that or not.
Anyways, love the site and love the work you all do.

Another submission stats idea: COLLABORATING ARTISTS It'll be brilliant for linearts, general collabs, bases etc..

hmmm, im not sure, but i dont really think that would be possible unless the user uploads each frame individually... will look into it

one thing that would be sweet is a global login. If I login at pixeljoint.com gallery and go to the forum it would recognize me as being logged in. Same if I go login on the forum and go to the gallery.
Aside from that but very muched linked to it is a "keep me logged in" kind of thing. I can't seem to get that done.
And then there's the thing that the themecolors for the forum only work if I login at the gallery and then go to the forum (I used the darkgrey one) if I go straight to the forum I get the default greenish one.

not sure if this is a valid idea. but id love to see a new layout. instead of just rectangles and stuff. have an amazing layout. that challenges stuff like stovens layout. somethign really interesting that when pixel artists visit the page. they think, wow, i want to be part of this.

i think the main thing i would like to see is the forum and the site mashed together(and i think most people agree on that). same level systems, also display the posts you have in your profile thingy. i think 100% pixel art would be cool. is there any way i could help?

A suggestion for the forum: something that's been bugging me for some time is that when you click on the link button, it asks you what text you want for the link before asking you for the actual adress.
I go to many forums and they all ask for the link first, so it's quite annoying when I have to edit all my posts after finding out that the pages I gave are wrong.
edit: I also think that the hot topic system should be changed ^.^ pretty much all topics with 2+ posts are hot topics on pj..

This is a very good idea....it would be very cool to have the ability to track the progress of certain artists...

How about a award ceremony at the end of every year? Like the Grammies.
ie:
- Artist of the Year
- Best Piece of the Year
- Best lil' Dude of the Year
- Best Room for the Joint
- Best newbie of the year
- ect.
- ect.

- Best Room for the Joint - jalonso doesnt need an ego boost either
- Best noob of the year - never ever going to happen. noobs get banned, thats their prize (clarification: noobs are not the same as a newbie)

If these have been said, then just ignore them.
There was talk of customization, but i'm not sure of exactly what. I
think the themes should still be in order, but have a full customizable
profile. Such as the background, the colors, how stuff is organized.
Maybe an option to add banner at the top of it. Things like that. Also,
have things like: Profile comments, 88x31 banner instead of text for
website link, last visitors, forum posts, custom fields(or a list of
extra fields you can add).
Like i said before, if the forum was melded into the site, it would be great.
There should be an option to submit your art to deviantArt(if they
permit it of course) Most likely a bad idea, but i'm just throwing it
out there.
But, I love the way PJ is right now.

Option for denser gallery display: thumbnails only in a grid, if you want to find out extra info or rate it then you can open its own page. EDIT: Just noticed you can already do this. Duuuh!
Artist comment space: like on Elfwood, for when you want to comment on the totality of an artists works, rather than any specific piece.
Zero point ratings: for when there has been obviously no effort placed in a piece.
The inability to rate ones own pieces: it makes me feel dirty to do so, but makes me feel disadvantaged if I don't.

ooo ooo, and upload mutliple files(if people have a bunch of animations, and don't want to put them all into one file.) Also, if you have like an avatar collection for aim, and people can set any of them.
